Details

Wobbegong Homestay shares a sheltered eastern Gam cove with neighbour Yenwar Homestay.

Located at the entrance to Kabui Bay, Wobbegong Homestay’s four private VIP bungalows lie in the shade of beachside trees.

The bungalows sleep two on raised beds. An extra mattress can be provided if required, and all the standard bedding, towels, and mosquito nets are supplied. Bedding for a third guest can be provided on request.

All bungalows have ensuite bathrooms, with western-style toilets, showers, and bucket bathing.

All bungalows have glazed windows and lockable doors. The covered bungalow verandahs have ocean views, and are equipped with table and chairs.

Meals are served in Wobbegong Homestay’s beachside dining shelter. Drinking water and tea and coffee making supplies are always freely available to guests there.

Electricity is supplied from a generator that operates from sunset until around midnight.

A variable phone signal is available at Wobbegong Homestay. It’s often quite weak, and a data connection is not usually available.

Only a little English is spoken at Wobbegong  Homestay: If you don’t speak Bahasa Indonesia, then bringing an offline translation app or phrasebook would be best.

The nearest villages are Friwen and Yenbeser. Both are about 15 minutes away by boat, and basic supplies are available there. Stronger 4G signals are also usually available at Yenbeser and Friwen.

Please don’t leave any inorganic trash at Wobbegong Homestay. Inorganic waste (especially plastic) that is left at homestays will simply contribute to Raja Ampat’s growing rubbish problem.

Transport / Getting there

One way transfers between Wobbegong Homestay and Waisai cost IDR 500,000. Transfers are by longboat that can carry a maximum of 4 people. Cost is shared by boat passengers.

Activities

Bring your snorkelling gear, because great snorkelling is available around Wobbegong Homestay. Dolphins, turtles, and wobbegong sharks and are often seen around the homestay. If you are especially lucky, you might also encounter dugongs.

Kabui Bay’s attractions are easily accessible, and, like all homestays, Wobbegong can provide snorkelling and sightseeing trips as desired.

  • A perfect hidden paradise, with even better hosts.

It is located in a magnificent hidden creek at the entrance of Kabuy Bay, with your own private beach. It is not directly in the main boat routes, so you feel hidden from the world, in a remore paradise, the silence only disturbed by the noise of the waves and the parrots around.

I started my Raja Ampat journey here and loved it so much that I decided to come back at the end. By far the best homestay with the most genuinely caring family.

Each 4 bungalows have raised beds with a clean mosquito net, and their own bathroom – which is not so common in Raja Ampat.
Some schools of fishes at the end of the jetty, but limited snorkeling quality right in front the beach. However, if you wander a bit to the right of the beach, you find some incredible coral forrests (some of the best I’ve seen in Raja Ampat), and we met a few sharks passing by.

They can easily organize any trips you need, we did a Kabuy Bay tour, some snorkeling in Friwen Wall, and Pa Samuel even brought us to the other side of the Bay at 4am to meet with a guide there to go Birding.

10/10 experience, can’t wait to be back.

  • Sam and Margaret are without a doubt two of the best hosts in Raja Ampat. The are very caring and always willing to help with any requests. There are 4 traditional bungalows at the homestay, each with a private bathroom and sea view. You have two small beaches to explore with a nice house reef, which I was lucky enough to see several turtles on!

Possibly the best thing about this location is that it’s away from the busier areas where there are frequent dive boats and speedboats crossing. It definitely feels more isolated while being relatively close to Waisai town.

    Things to note:
    – Sam and Margaret have limited English but are very willing to works things out with you
    – The washing water is slightly salty but not bad
    – There is only some 4G signal if you got up the hill a bit

I’ll be back for sure! Thanks again.

  • stayed here for four nights (five days). I had quite high expectations, but unfortunately the experience was a bit disappointing for me. There is actually very little to do in this location. Walking or hiking is not really possible, as the area is very small and it is just a small bay.
Snorkeling was also not a great experience for me. There is little to no coral, the water was often quite murky, and there were frequently strong waves.
At high tide, you can basically only sit on the veranda and wait for the water to go down, or walk a short distance to the right where there is a small beach.
The people are very kind and welcoming, and I truly want to emphasize that. However, personally I felt quite limited, simply because there is not much to do.

  • A home away from home – Wobbegong homestay!

4 nights at Wobbegong with Pa Samuel and Ibu Eta felt so so good – it was hard to leave. The food is super nice and ‘simpel’ in it’s best ways – fresh fish and also veggies from their house garden / the forest. Speak with them about your dietary needs and they will try to accomodate as good as possible. Maybe download an offline translation app – internet reception is not the best and not everywhere available (what a bliss!). The day trip in Kabui Bay was wonderful with an interesting snorkelling outing in ‘the passage’ and our transport to the next homestay we combined with a snorkelling trip at Friwen Wall – where Samuel patiently stood by while we snorkelled/freedived for two hours. If you’re into birds you’re also going to be happy there 😉

The house reef just in front of the huts is not flashy compared to others but there is still a lot to explore (beautiful big school at the jetty, nurse shark, many other reef fishes) and practically no current. The coral reef between Wobbegong homestay and Batu Lima is really good though – bring your own masks and fins and be prepared for the blacktips somewhere closer to Batu Lima (quite a long snorkel though).

Many thanks to Samuel, Eta and Lucas Fernando for making this such a warm and welcoming expierence!

  • We had a great stay at Wobbegong! The bungalows were clean and directly on the beach. We enjoyed how quiet it is. The house reef is very good and we enjoyed seeing a school of fish that hang out at the neighbouring jetty. The food was delicious, although breakfast was on the light side.

  • I had a beautifully relaxing and exciting stay at Wobbegong. The little cove is secluded and peaceful, both beaches are beautiful and I enjoyed just sitting on the front porch watching the gentle waves, the baby sharks and the occasional dolphins pass by. The house reefs are very nice and easy to enjoy via the beach. A wide variety of birds keep you company, kingfishers, hornbills and eagles and many songbirds with distinctive calls. Sam caught fresh fish for meals on more than one occasion, I enjoyed the excellent cooking full of fresh vegetables (they are very responsive to food preferences), the dining room is charming and overall the accommodations are clean and comfortable.

The position at the entrance of Kabui Bay creates many great daytrip options. Friwen Wall and Batu Lima, and the Dore Mkun lagoon (where Alfred Wallace studied birds of paradise and other wildlife in 1860, and where we saw two spotted rays) and the hosts’ village of Yenbeser are nearby. For hikers, Sam’s brother can guide up through a butterfly forest to a good lookout behind the village.

On the Kabui side and beyond there are superb mangrove lagoons which Pa Samuel knows how to navigate. We went on a number of outings, each time accompanied also by either Sam’s wife Eta or his brother. The highlights were Sauwandarek and Cape Kri–the brothers located spots to see many sharks and turtles, and we also went to Arborek and snorkelled the drift between Kapisawar and Sawinggrai. Just ask Sam a day or two in advance and he can bring you anywhere. I strongly recommend this homestay!

  • I stayed 3 nights with very friendly Semuel and Eta.
Nice clean bungalow as in the description.
    Food was great.
The housereef is not as spectacular as at Rufas or Avinsea, but still nice to snorkel. Unfortunately the wobbegongs & dugongs had other appointments. Had a daytrip to Friwen Wall, no timepressure, Sem just kept standby with the boat until I was done.

  • I have been at Papuani Homestay for one week and It has been a great experience. The bungalow is clean and the food is ok. The location is perfect, next to Tarzan diving and with the sea just in front. Highly recommended accomodation.

Danke an Wobbegong Homestay

  • I recently stayed whit family at Wobbegong Homestay, and it was a fantastic experience!
This place is truly one of the best.
The rooms were very clean, and the surroundings were well-kept, creating a pleasant environment for our family.

Reef brings a fantastic view for snorking and we saw dolphins in bay.
The hosts were exceptionally friendly, making us feel welcome throughout our stay. The food they served was amazing, offering a taste of local flavors that we thoroughly enjoyed.

We also took part in some extra tours with Samuel, which allowed us to create many wonderful memories like. The family was incredibly helpful and attentive to our needs, even going out of their way to fix a WiFi connection issue we encountered.

The value for money at Wobbegong Homestay is excellent. While you can find more expensive hotels in the area, none can match the warm hospitality and personalized service we received here. If I return to Raja Ampat, this will definitely be my first choice for accommodation 🙂

  • My girlfriend and myself stayed a night at wobbegong homestay and were blown away by the kindness of the hosts. The location really nice, the food was incredible and the jungle behind the homestay was really nice. We found a northern common cuscus right behind the bungalow. The accomodation was nice with a comfy bed and a private bathroom. Shower pressure was very average if there was one negative about the place. Otherwise everything was amazing the only downside was we didn’t get to stay longer. Easily accessible to do bird of paradise trekking as well.

Would recommend to people looking to stay at a homestay in Raja Ampat. Super friendly hosts!

  • Samuel and his wife, who don’t speak English, have a small cove where the brand new bungalows are lapped by the waves. The house reef offers nothing much but we snorkelled wonderful Friwen Wall and visited the nearby villages. It’s a small family Homestay with good food . Over time Samuel will develop more activities. 3 star rating from us.
