Features

Details

Shady Sea Raja Ampat lies on a tiny island in the sheltered waters of Gam Bay. (See the map below.)

Two over-water private bungalows are available.

The bungalows sleep two on raised beds. The usual mosquito net and bedding are provided, and room light switches and power outlets for charging devices are fitted.

Meals are served on the bungalow verandahs. Chairs and a small table are provided, and drinking water, and tea and coffee making supplies are always available there free of charge.

Guests share a two room, tiled floor bathroom building. A western style toilet, dip mandi (bucket) bathing and a mirror are provided.

Electricity is provided by generator and is available from sunset to around midnight.

Shady Sea Raja Ampat only receives a weak and erratic phone signal. Expect to be offline while at the homestay.

Kapisawar village is about a ten minute boat ride away. Basic provisions and a data connection can be found there.

Please do take all your inorganic rubbish away with you when you leave. As everywhere in Raja Ampat, there is no safe local waste disposal. Any plastic, batteries and other inorganic waste you leave behind will only contribute to the trashing of paradise.

Your hosts Julia and family only have a little English, so if you don’t speak Bahasa Indoneisa, then bringing an offline translation app or phrasebook is recommended to ease communication.

Transport / Getting there

Waisai transfers are by longboat. Trip price, shared by passengers is -

  • IDR 1,000,000 for 1 or two passengers
  • IDR 1,500,000 for 3-4 passengers

Activities

Shady Sea is the perfect base from which to explore the karst islands, hidden waterways and rich marine life of Gam Bay. There are sheltered lagoons where moon jellyfish rise to the surface, and caves where roosting bats can be observed, including the seldom observed Raffray’s sheath-tailed bat. Orchids adorn the bay’s karst islets and stacks and the waterways conceal secrets like the “Hidden Lagoon” – a body of water that can only be entered via a cave and which shelters several intriguing species of marine life including soft corals, Synaptid sea-cucumbers and unusual jellyfish.

Great snorkelling (bring your own gear) over good coral is available in Gam Bay.

Kapisawar village is nearby and a great day’s outing can be had there and in Sawinggrai which lies a bit further to the east along a well made concrete path.

Shady Sea Raja Ampat can arrange any kind of snorkelling or sightseeing trip you might like to do.
