Public Boat to the Fam Islands

If you have plenty of time, you don’t mind a bit of discomfort, and you want spend as little as possible on transport costs, then there are cargo boats that you can use to get to the Fam Islands. (Obviously, if you are going to arrive on the cargo boat, then you don’t need to request a Waisai pickup when submitting the booking form above.)

Here’s what you need to know about getting the cargo boat to Fam.

Activities

Snorkelling over coral outcrops is available off the beach at Saubaryam Homestay. Low tide provides the opportunity for long beach walks.

There is also a path connecting the villages of Saukabu and Saupapir. The trail continues from Saupapir to a jetty on the north side of the island. To the jetty and back from Saukabu is about 11 kilometers.

Saubaryam Homestay can arrange tours to all the famous snorkelling sites and attractions around Pam and Piaynemo. (Pam and Piaynemo are the preferred local names of the islands often marked on maps as Fam and Penemu.) Spectacular karst island panoramas like those of Wayag are available at Piaynemo, and the myriad low sand cays to the south of Pam feature deserted beaches, sapphire seas and the opportunity to snorkel with mantas.

Maners Homestay Piaynemo highlights tour

Saubaryam offers a tour to Piaynemo to visit the top view lookout, as well as the Star and Manta Lagoon viewpoints. The cost is IDR 1,000,000. Cost is shared by particpants (max 4)

  • We stayed on the overwater bungalow for 3 nights and it was amazing! The bed is a little small for 2 people but the view makes up for it. Ingridd was a great host even though she was a busy woman she always made sure we were okay. Easy access to Piyanemo, snorkelling and manta rays! Boat trips were a very reasonable price. Little village just a walk away which was nice to see all the locals. Food was tasty and plenty of food. Really enjoyed our stay here.

  • We had a great stay at Saubaryam with our family. Inggit is a great host and her husband has a boatrental which makes excursions very convenient.
The homestay is in a quiet part of the island what we enjoyed the most.

  • We had an excellent stay at this homestay, run by a young family with help from their grandparents.
The location is peaceful, the bungalows are comfortable, the food is good and plentiful, and the atmosphere is friendly and family-oriented.
We were lucky enough to arrive all together, the guests of the three bungalows at the homestay, which created a very friendly atmosphere, so we shared all the excursions.
This homestay is very well located, close to all the key spots on the Fams Islands.
Thank you again for your warm welcome, which was friendly but not intrusive.

  • We had 3 great nights at Saubaryam.

Great hospitality from Inggit with delicious food and snorkelling trips organised.

The room in the photos that has an enclosed ceiling has an nocturnally active family of rats – all good, just noisy at times.

  • Maners Homestay was renamed Saubaryam Homestay in March 2025. Homestay ownership and management has not changed.

It’s sad that none of the Stay Raja Ampat guests who have booked this homestay in the past year could spare the time to leave reviews. You can find a couple here on Google though.
