Off-grid snorkeling, bird watching and beach relaxation.

Be sure to bring snorkelling gear! Pulau Rambau’s reefs are rich and healthy. Good snorkelling is available off the beach at Sampari Paradise Homestay. Dugongs are occasional visitors.

Snorkelling trips to nearby Pulau Dayan and reefs further afieldcan be provided on request.

The village of Marandan Weser/Yenyar is nearby, and, as one of the last villages in the islands where all the houses are tradtionally constructed, it's well worth a visit.

Pulau Rambau’s forests are filled with birdlife, including the mound building megapode known locally as the maleo.

  • Fantastic secluded homestay off the beaten paths of the more popular smaller islands. Olof, Shirley, Kezzbo, Grandmama, Grandpapa, and all the kids were incredibly warm, friendly and welcoming. No matter what your native language, they always enjoy your company and look for things to do to make your stay as interesting and enjoyable as possible. The food and preparation is also fantastic, you will never go hungry. They also know the island and places to go really well. Solid snorkeling is right out front of your bungalow with plenty to see-n-sea. As a bonus they also have WiFi through Star Link, but only at night and early mornings. Can’t miss place!

  • Bonjour,

  • We loved Sampari homestead. Of the two weeks we spent in RA, it was our favourite place that we stayed! Five stars all the way. The food was excellent and varied, and the rooms are in very good condition. It was nice having a window and the ensuite was clean and did not smell. The bedding, pillows and mattresses were also fresh and clean, which was unusual. Olof and family were lovely and it was great having the kids around because our kids and theirs played most evenings together. They were very attentive to anything we wanted, and always ready for a chat (via translation of course!). It was nice also that there are only 4 bungalows, which keeps it feeling remote. If we come back to RA, this will be the first place I book.

  • A million stars!!!!! I am SO HAPPY that I picked Sampari Paradise! After weeks of research on homestays, I was recommended to come here by the #1 homestay on my list who was sold out – he said they were new and I would not be disappointed. He was right! Sampari Paradise Homestay was the most meaningful life experience, transformational rejuvenation in a true paradise with new friends, bonds, and relationships that revived my spirit and made me want to stay forever. The entire family treated me like family from the moment we met. Offerings of kindness, endless delicious food, help from the children, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters was like a dream. This family did every little thing they could to make me feel welcome, loved, and taken care of – so well that I was wondering how in the world I ended up here to meet such loving and caring people in Papua. We sang songs, danced, laughed, made sand castles while the children played ukulele, practiced our language skills. Everyone played the ukulele, guitar, bass, drums and sang.

The brothers took me to the waterfall on the long boat, playing ukulele and sang the entire way, hiked through the mangroves, and the waterfall was an easy, mesmerizing hike and cool swim. The water pouring over my head washed away my “monkey mind” and left me feeling clarity and focus about my life’s direction. We had tea on the mangrove dock, met a few locals, shared lunch, and listened to some music before heading home in the longboat, seeing dolphins along the way. The brothers cut off the boat and floated among the pod, very considerate of nature. They called the birds and the birds called back at them, found a gorgeous and uniquely decorated coconut crab, a CousCous marsupial in the trees, we went snorkeling at the most pristine coral garden I had seen in all of Indonesia even after having spent 20 days of scuba diving in Komodo and Raja Ampat. We saw baby birds, nesting birds, and played in the sea.

Every day, I snorkeled among the mangroves at my bungalow and discovered something new, like a lined pipefish I had never seen with yellow, black and a red tail. There were resident clownfish in healthy anemones, acropora gardens, hard and soft corals I had never seen, big sponges, and the thick, healthy seagrasses and hidden holes and habitats with so many critters. I study marine ecology and I could have stayed here forever just snorkeling around looking at nudibranchs and many species of fishes and corals.

I loved watching the children go to school in a boat, Yelensen and her big smile delivering the most delicious meals, fish, baked goods, vegetables, chocolate creme cakes, mocha – every meal was deliberately different and fresh, mostly healthy fresh fish, clams, calamari and savory flavors that captivated my tastebuds. I love to eat and I eat a lot – the food was one of the best parts of my stay at Sampari, the food was so plentiful and lezat (delicious)! The family, the hands that made the food and space so welcoming, were sincere, kind, helpful, fun, generous – too generous – and you could see their hearts smiling in their eyes, through their actions, songs, dances, and just simply walking around together exploring the beach and chatting.

I downloaded Google Translation app but took the time to translate and write down most helpful phrases and I enjoyed writing letters translated on paper to let the family and children know how grateful I was for their help and to be there. It was important to me that they know how amazing their work was and the children loved to read the letters and giggle together. This precious Papuan family was the happiest of all the people I have ever met.

They built the entire little village with their own hands, the intricate design of the bungalows and each thread that held to roof and sides together was stunning hand crafted art work. The community area with tea and coffee was clean and welcoming with a handy little washing station, soap, the bathrooms were perfect and easy to use. The benches and bungalows were hand crafted with detailed architectural design and decorated in thoughtfulness.

I enjoyed watching the sunset or sunrise with (who I call) PaPa Papua, the grandfather, who was very proud of his family. He told me all about the sea in front of the bungalow, the dugong that passed each day, and although he was speaking in Indonesian I was able to use the translate app to figure most of it out, or I could tell by where he was pointing. It was a beautiful experience to share time with people of all ages, from the children, the grandparents, parents, aunts/uncles, brothers/sisters and everyone seemed genuinely interested in being a sincere friend.

They also give you your space and it is very private and peaceful. The children knew they were not to be intrusive but I loved having them around. They were smart, kind, with big smiles and even wrote “I love you” in the sand with all of our names.

The space was clean and easy to access, there was power at night to charge the go pro and phones, and sounds of birds, music, and laughter were common and it felt like a peaceful, deserted island. I can’t say enough about how wonderful Sampari Paradise is, the people who make it special, surrounded by the sea, mountain views, sunrises, all you want to do is paint a picture…so I did. I had time to do art and write my book. One of the last days, it was the Sabbath and I assured them not to do anything special for me, and we ended up with a big celebration of live music and the children did a Papuan dance with native dresses and hats, they sang songs and we had a blast! The young girls and boys were so sweet, the oldest took off her crown and put it on my head. It was as if to say, “You are one of WE. We are so happy here that we want to share it with you and the whole world so the world can be happy and friendly!”

I had the time of my life and was eager to do anything I could to stay. The memory will stay with me forever and I will go back to visit my new friends as soon as I can. This was a first, to find a place I will always go back to instead of trying somewhere new. I really long to visit again- everything else is convenient boatride away (snorkeling, diving, etc) so next time instead of a liveaboard, I will stay here and venture out from time to time to dive. It was a long longboat ride back to Sorong, but well worth the experience and way better than the ferry! Take a wrap or towel to shade your head from the elements on long rides. They had tarps and protection for my luggage not to get wet and to protect myself in case it rained but it did not rain (even though it was the rainy season.) There were no bugs really; I wore long pants and socks at dusk/dinner and did not need bug spray so I was happy. They helped me with my luggage and to find a taxi to the airport, which was very helpful, I was never stranded and always in the best care. It was hard to watch them go back without me, I did feel a tear in my eye. You should go! And give as much love to this family as they give to the world. Take more cash than you need (the trips to waterfall and to snorkeling site by boat were over $1 million IDR each and worth every bit so do it and don’t hesitate). Remember to save enough money for the taxi to the airport if this is the end of your trip. I wished I had more cash to give them a huge tip for all the hard work and thoughtfulness they gave to make this experience the best, so I just gave then everything I had left which is still nothing compared to how much they gave me during this stay. Sampari is a true PARADISE Homestay, so go!
