Details
Raja Ampat Sunrise Homestay has eight solid timber VIP bunglows with ensuite bathrooms.
Each bungalow sleeps two on raised beds. Bathrooms have showers and handbasins with running water.
The bungalows each have covered verandahs with ocean views.
Meals are served in a large beachside dining room where drinking water, tea and coffee are always freely available to guests.
Electricity is from Saukabu village supply, and is usually available from 6pm to 6am. A decent phone signal is available, and a slow data connection is usually possible.
Raja Ampat Sunrise Homestay can accept credit card payments. (Note that this service is dependent on the Telkomsel signal, and is not available when the phone network is down.)
Raja Ampat Sunrise Homestay lies next to Sau Kabu village where basic supplies can be purchased in small local shops. Sau Kabu (like everywhere else in Raja Ampat) has no secure way of disposing of inorganic waste, so it’s best to take any you create away with you to eliminate the chance of it eventually winding up in the ocean.
English is spoken at Raja Ampat Sunrise Homestay.
Please note: Coconut crabs are a protected species. Please don’t buy them. Raja Ampat Sunrise Homestay will refuse to cook any you might bring and will instead ask that you release them.
Transport / Getting there
Transport between Waisai and Raja Ampat Sunrise Homestay is by either longboat or speedboat. Both boats carry a maximum of four people.
You will need to contact Sunrise if you want to specify a preference. (Contact details are provided in booking confirmation emails.)
See Sunrise's August 2025 transfer and trip pricelist (PDF 345KB) for details.

Public Boat to the Fam Islands
If you have plenty of time, you don't mind a bit of discomfort, and you want spend as little as possible on transport costs, then there are cargo boats that you can use to get to the Fam Islands. (Obviously, if you are going to arrive on the cargo boat, then you don't need to request a Waisai pickup when submitting the booking form above.)
Here's what you need to know about getting the cargo boat to Fam.
Activities
There's a host of activities available from Raja Ampat Sunrise Homestay. Pam Island has lakes and a trans-island walking path to explore, the Wayag-like panoramas of Piaynemo are close by, and you can snorkel with mantas at nearby Mios Ba.
Fabulous snorkelling is available around the Pam Islands sand cays and coral reefs and at Piaynemo's Melissa's Garden - be sure to bring your snorkelling gear. In addition to the many local trips Raja Ampat Sunrise Homestay offers, you can also make an all day excursion to Wayag if you want.
Raja Ampat Sunrise Homestay can arrange any trip you want. See their August 2025 transfer and trip pricelist (PDF 345KB) for some popular options.

I really enjoyed staying here. The food was the best I had during my 3 weeks in Rajasthan Ampat, the bed is big and comfy, the shower is nice compared to other homestays, and the perilous are really kind! I would stay there again.

We had a wonderful stay at the Sunrise Homestay! The place was incredibly beautiful and everybody was very helpful. We went on so many excursions, and went snorkeling to see some stunning views of the corals and fishes. Everything is clean and the food is wonderful, we ate some of the best fish we have ever eaten here. We really recommend staying here!

I simply give it a 10. Everything was great from the moment my boyfriend and I arrived until we left. The houses are super new, clean, and equipped with everything you need. The beach is a true paradise on earth. White sand, palm trees, and a superb coral reef for snorkeling. You can enjoy and experience authentic local life. The food is a 10. Everything was delicious, varied, and they provided snacks (which I haven’t seen in other homestays). The people who run the place are great. Even though we couldn’t understand each other perfectly, we were able to talk and hear them tell us about their lives. They organized excursions and made it easy to get what you needed. For me, it was a 10. Thank you very much.

Sunrise Homestay is one of the best places in Raja Amapt.
You are very close to the most important spots. Rufas, Piaynemo, Bintang, Famwall, Melissa and more. Manta Point is special. We were there several times in the afternoon and were always lucky to swim with them. The reefs in the area are in good condition. Very little garbage in the sea and a good view of the underwater world.
The bungalows are brand new and in perfect condition. Private toilet and a good bed. The white beach is beautiful, just watch out for the current. We were with a group at Sunrise and everyone was happy. The food with fresh grilled fish was tasty.
We will come back to the last paradise.
Special thanks to Paul, the owner, for the tour to Misool with his boat!

We loved our stay here! The huts are all brand new with ensuites that even have running water during certain times of the day, which means you can have a shower! This was the only homestay I stayed at (out of 7) that had a “shower”.
Food was good and the beach out the front is absolutely stunning. Good snorkelling closer to the dock with giant schools of fish.
We did a couple of boat trips to Rufas Island, Piaynemo and Melissas Garden. Rufas snorkelling was the best, we much preferred it to Melissas Garden.
When we arrived for the first day we didn’t really know who owned the place as no one explained anything to us, but we went with the flow and ended up just requesting a boat trip for the next day. Best to have an idea of what you want to do each day anyway and just point to the map.
On our last day we did a big snorkelling trip which included lunch on a beautiful beach. This was a really great experience and super well organised!

We were 3 days here and we really enjoy our stay! The island is super quiet and the homestay is located in a beautiful beach and a long one, so super nice for walks. The snorkeling is also good.
The houses in the homestay are new and have a private bathroom. You eat together in the restaurant with the other guest but there is space to eat alone if you want. The food is nice and abundant. Paulus and the rest of staff are really friendly and nice! They try to make sure you have anything you need. We would come back again so overall a great homestay.

Great homestay. Loved my 5 days here. I’ll return.
The owner, Paulus, wasn’t on the island during my stay. However his wife Antee was, and cooked the most fabulous lunches and dinners. Fresh fish in different sauces, soups, vegetables, tofu, temphe, fried eggs, rice noodles.Snacks of pancakes plain or green(pandan leaf) or with chocolate sauce. Fried bannana fritters. Fruits, plenty of tea, coffee and water.
Negations for snorkling trips or any small issues ( light bulb out or water to bathroom turned on ) was through Renee.
Highly recommend Renee as an excellent guide. Good english and knowledgeable with areas for snorkling, walks etc. Thankyou Renee!
Accomodation was good. Own bathroom, tidy. Pillows a bit lumpy, but I bring my own small travel pillow. No rats, plenty of small ants getting into opened snack packets. Bring repellent for afternoon mozzies ,sand flies.
Power on from 6pm till 6am. Rattly fan adequately cools you at night.
Lovely to be near a village, friendly people, children exuberant.
Good snorkilng off the jetty area. Can be strong currents. Also great snorkling further down the island off maners homestay.
Overall, fabulous.

We have been there for the third time now and the location is simply great. Piaynemo, Famwall, Rufas, Melissa Garden, Napolion and Manta Point are very close, we were at different spots on 4 days with the good speedboat. We even visited Manta point and Rufas several times because they weren’t far away.
The transfer went well. The Whatsapp messages in English were always answered, many thanks again to Paul! .
Now there are 4 rooms or bungalows with their own toilet and bucket shower. The raised beds in these rooms are equipped with mosquito nets. Electricity is available from 6 to 6 and a mobile network is available. There is a very small shop in town. Fresh, delicious fish was available for lunch and dinner. Breakfast is standard with fried banana or green pancake. Many thanks to the family of Paul and his sister. We will come back!
With Rene, who accompanied us on the tours, we went bird watching, Friwen Wall and the blue river. He always tried to sell the tour at a higher price but he negotiates the price.
Unfortunately I can’t upload any photos of the beautiful places in the comments.

Good Homestay beside Piaynemo and perfect Manta Point. We did it 2 times to the Manta point and saw 10. Melissa’s Garden is outstanding beautiful. We will come again.
It’s at a village with a very small shop. The rooms are okay with a moskitonet.
About the tours it is need to bargain. He likes to take more than at the stayrajaampat.com website. We was five people and he likes to take then the boat per person.
A very very big minus was that he likes to take for the transfer from Kri the double price after he was talking with Mambetron Homestay and they try to get more money because we was dependent from the transfer. Very bad the situation with Tina from Mambetron!

We stayed one night at Sunrise Homestay while on a dive Safari . The bungalows on a beautiful white sand beach with crystal clear water. Our bungalow had an en-suite with bucket shower and toilet. We had a comfortable bed with mosquito net.
The food was amazing- Grouper Fish BBQ was fresh and delicious.

My wife and I stayed here for 7 days.
The Vip bungalow with ensuite bathroom is really worth it’s price.
It is at the most beautiful beach we experienced in RA with palms, white powder sand, turquoise water and regular dolphins passing by.
The friendly host family prepared the best food / fish dishes we had in our 5 weeks in RA.
This would be worth 5 stars – BUT:
In opposition to the directly neighbouring Tanjung Mefiyai HS run by the extremely friendly Nataniel and his family Brian from Sunrise didn’t offer a pricelist for his boat trips when we were his guests. Asking him you will get a demand which is partly higher than twice the price Nataniel has listed in his restaurant.
So you will always have to bargain hard with Brian.
We went to the very near manta point with Nataniel for snorkelling and saw many, in the afternoon 3 pm – fantastic!!!
Usually we asked our current hosts to take us to our next destination; in this case we asked our next host to pick us up.

Claudia, below covers it nicely, as we overlapped for 3/4 days. I’ll add that the bathrooms and toilets were very nice at Sunrise – clean, nicely built, etc. .
Brian used an especially nice and safe yacht to pick us up from Mandarin as getting to the Pam (Fam) islands involves crossing some fairly big open ocean with waves and chop. As mentioned by Claudia, Brian makes a good effort at hosting quality activities and we had a fabulous swim with lots of mantas, good snorkelling, and an excellent trip to Paiynemo with a picnic lunch provided by Sunrise.
Again, the currents in front of the homestay are not user friendly, but the reef near the jetty provides some joy. For good snorkelling one needs to go out to a place by boat.
Lots of hiking options and one can explore with or without Brian, but less likely to get lost with him.
If of interest as it was to some of our 6 pax group it’s BYO beer – so pick some up in Arborek.
Brian also provided good transport to our next homestay.

I stayed here for 4 nights. This place was incredible, a quiet oasis with a white sandy beach in a sleepy village. Of the 5 homestays I stayed at, Sunrise was one of the best for food. The bungalow was very comfortable with several plugs and different lighting options. Brian and his family were very friendly and helpful. The snorkeling was great although the current right in front of Sunrise is very strong even on a quiet day although it is possible to snorkel to the jetty where you’ll find plenty to look at. Brian took me snorkeling just around the corner on the south side of the island and it was great for corals although not that many fish. Even though the sea in this area is much quieter than in front of the homestay the current can also get quite strong which is why Brian said I shouldn’t go on my own and I’m glad I went by boat with him. He also took us on a short snorkeling trip nearby where I saw more mantas (and different types) than I ever saw at manta point. He also took us on a great birdwatching trek. Note that the village is very small and has one shop which sells very few things. Brian took me to Pam village where there are more shops with plenty of treats. We also walked about 3km to the next village which was very charming. I will definitely be coming back here!

Stayed here for two nights in mid February, great food, really well built bungalows, a large clean shower & toilet building & the most beautiful beach. Brian has a covered fast speed boat which is ideal for trips to Wayag. Really enjoyed our stay here!

This is a good and happy homestay. I and my group of 6 stayed for 3D2N. Each cottage is clean and has a beautiful ocean view. Clear turquoise water. Islands in the horizon. Sea breeze flowing towards the cottage. It has a designed tropical garden in front of the cottages. The beach is combed daily for debris and plastic waste. Different to what the webpage says, electricity goes on from sunset to about 8.00 a.m. Plenty of sweet water for ladling bath (but no shower) and to flush the toilet. All toilets have clean toilet seats! And toilet paper on a roll, replenished daily! Good, standard fare meals three times a day.
Bedding was functional: the mattress was firm, not lumpy, no unwanted aroma or bed bugs. The bed sheet and pillow cover were fresh and clean. The mosquito netting was not new but functional.
Breakfast seems to cater towards Western guests (pancakes or fried bananas), lunch and dinner usually with rice, a fish dish beautifully cooked (catch of the day, we had fresh Wahoo!) and stir fried veggies, with noodles added at times. There is a fridge to store food, but it only works properly when the electricity is on. Brian’s family cooks and serves the dishes, and cleans them afterwards. Brian and his family members are friendly and approachable. Brian always try to please you as much as he can. He apologises when things are not meeting his expectations. However, we noticed that his ability to express ideas in English is rather limited. This could cause misunderstandings with guests who have limited ability to communicate in the Indonesian language. The island logic may be slightly different to western logic, so you’d want to be patient, polite but persistent.
And yes, they have internet. Brian can show you how to connect. He uses an iPad (or something comparable to one) to calculate prices and communicate with his suppliers, possibly to use Google translate to communicate with guests.
The homestay has its own camper top boat with an outboard engine that can take guests to snorkelling spots near neighbouring islands. The snorkelling spots are excellent, plenty of corals and fish. Ask for Bram to drive the boat. He knows the spots. He also takes care of preparing and bringing you your lunch when you go out snorkelling. The home stay also has two four outboard engine speed boat, operated by Brian’s brother Paul. To rent one, one must check well in advance, as it is often rented out for group travel from Waisai to surrounding areas. Always remember that the boats have engine and the engine runs on fuel. Fuel is expensive in the islands. So traveling using boats is rather costly, unless you share with a group. Once you book a boat trip, it’d be difficult to cancel or change, since Brian or Paul may have already committed to purchase the fuel, men the boat, or worse, order a third party boat.
We did not have any rat or mosquito issues. However, beware of sand fly during day time. They were everywhere and they bite. The bite leaves a small nasty red and itchy mark on people with sensitive skin. To prevent bites, use lemon eucalyptus oil or olbas oil to cover exposed skin particularly legs and arms, and wear long pants and long sleeves.
Other than this, we enjoyed our stay and we highly recommend Raja Ampat Sunrise Homestay.
One thing I need to add is that both Brian and Paulus promptly reply to my sms and Whats App messages prior to my and my entourage’s arrival. So the rooms were ready when we arrived there! Bravo Sunrise Homestay!

Beautiful turquoise water, white coral sand beach. Probably one of the best in Raja Ampat. Only some corals for snorkeling though.
We stayed 6 nights in the VIP bungalow. Well equipped with table and chairs, bathroom, hand soap, hooks and washing line. Only hammocks were missing. Nice garden-like area between the beach and the bungalows.
Food was good but similar every day.
There is a fridge in the dining area.
Brian prepares coco nuts if you wish.
He was very friendly and helpful with wishes / requests we had during our stay.
Unfortunately (like in some other homestays) there was a rat in our bungalow at night…but Brian provided a trap.
We did a trip to Wayag and Piaynemo. Trip and transport prices were different than shown on the website. Some skilled price negotiations with Brian are recommended.
Assume the prices Brian is asking now are higher than those he has quoted for this page Ben?
Hello,
please check with Brian and make sure he either sticks with the published prices or updates them.
He definitly charges too much.
To Wayag he charged a total of 15 mio. To Waisai with stop in North Mansuar he suggested a deal saying 1 person pays 1,5 and the other 1,2 mio = 2,7 mio.
Other guests can provide more examples.
By the way thank you for this website and for its benefits for the local communities and tourists.
Ben
Thanks for your feedback Ben 🙂
Guests are well within their rights to demand that services are supplied at the prices advertised on SRA.
There is a clear and easy channel provided to homestay owners for updating prices, so failing to do so is unprofessional at best and deceptive at worst.
We’ve removed all Sunrise’s tour prices until Brian gets around to updating them.

There is internet !!
Brian helps you to change
3 G. So you have not only telephone, but also Internet.
I used to skype a lot every day
And whattsapp communicates
Brian is an all-round talent.
He repairs his homestays,
Find fantastic snorkeling spots nearby.
He plays and sings in church Outstanding solo !!
Definitely on Sunday visit the church!
You have to understand Brian!
I have been at sunrise for a week.
The entire family is busy cleaning the beach every day.
A special treat are the cakes of Brian’s wife Henni.
She is a genius.
Your children are very well behaved,
Extremely friendly and diligently helping with the operation.
A striking difference to Kri is that it is never as hot at sunrise homestay as it is at kri.
I found the temperature very pleasant.
A hot tip is the VIP BUNGALOW.
Here you have a lot of space and also a private bathroom and toilet for you in the bungalow.
There is also gorgeous near the sunrise homestay
Walks to lakes, caves and other villages.
I recommend sunrise homestay

Hello to all at Stay Raja Ampat! Before We get started I would like to say this is the first bad review I will write. I have previously stayed at Mandarin(Gam) Sea Fans(Manyafun) Arborek(Mawar) Yengakawe(Waigeo) Yenaduak( Birie) …..This is my 2nd time in Raja and 1st time in the Pam islands. What a disappointment!! We arrived at Sunrise with the expectation to stay at least a week. Due to the lack of cleanliness and Brian’s hunger for money, we stayed 2 nights. We were 3 couples staying in 3 private bungalows. When we arrived, we were shocked by the very dirty bungalows! Bins with rubbish and unchanged sheets! This was also the first time we saw padlocks on the bungalow door…(hmmmm I was suspicious from the beginning) We looked passed that because we wanted to enjoy the beauty of the area. After dropping our bags in our bungalow, we started collecting rubbish along the beach. We had it clean in around an hour! We love to pitch in and help where we can!
The following day we went on a day trip to Piaynemo and loved it! Great snorkeling and an excellent boat( the only positive of the place) to move around the beautiful islands. The dinner that night was superb! So after dinner is when things started to get ugly. Ok so each couple paid their bill for the stay and we were in the restaurant relaxing after the long day. Brian comes to us with the cash in hand and says “there isn’t enough money”. Remember this is after we counted the rupiah in front of him and he agreed payment was good. “It’s 1 million short” he says. We all look at each other quite confused but say ok, let’s count again and work it out. As we are counting and working it all, Brian and his arrogant attitude made it worse. “ I do this every day, I know how to count”…….Wow?!? As if we have no clue of how to count. In the end, the money was correct. No apologizes from Brian. All we got back was arrogance and more arrogance. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt so I thought to myself, it was a lack of communication because the language or an honest mistake. Boy was I nieve. My friends already knew he was no good but I’ve never experienced this in Raja. We went to bed with a bad taste in our mouth but it gets worse. And this is what really upset us…..
The following morning it was time to leave. We experienced a very very strong storm. The original plan was for 1 couple to go to Arborek ( they paid 1 million the night before for transport) and the other 2 couples to head to Batanta( Dugong homestay and Yenaduak…Birie island) there was also another couple from the homestay heading to Batanta (Dayan) so that makes a total of 6 people to Batanta and 2 people to Arborek…..the 1 couple paid 1 million to go to Dayan…..the other 2 couples paid 1.5 million total to go from Dayan to Birie…..so a total of 2.5 million which we thought was a bit heavy……but we paid it thinking Brian was honest..haha in our dreams…….due to the weather, Arborek was out of the question. The couple decided to head to Batanta with the rest of us. Brian didn’t want to refund the 1 million for Arborek?!?! How can you keep their money without providing the service! We couldn’t believe it! He finally returned the money with attitude and we headed to Batanta. With that being said Brian was just nasty to us after that. Didn’t even help us load the boat?!? Trying to be kind the couple gave 100,000 as a gesture to sooth things over. They should have never done that. Now here’s the icing on the cake with a cherry on top. We arrive to our final destination in Birie. Just as we are unloading the boat( which he didn’t help with, again) Brian says” I need 400,000 because I organized the petrol for Arborek ahead of time.” WHAT?!?!? Are you kidding me? The worse thing is that the couple paid it….well they gave him 300,000 more( 100,000 from earlier) Brian left without shaking anyone’s hand….no thank you…..no nothing……absolute embarrassment……disgusting!!! I hate when bad people take advantage of the good ones with big hearts. It was disgusting! This was the first time in 2 months total time in Raja that I felt ripped off. We paid 2.9 million to go from sunrise to Birie Island. We spoke to a couple other homestay owners after that and they both said too expensive. That’s when I finally knew Brian was a fraud, a dishonest, money hungry, dollar sign seeing owner. I felt and still feel like an idiot for trying to see the good in him.
This happened January 16th and 17th 2019. I’ve been waiting all this time for decent signal to warn others who may be thinking about staying with Brian. It’s sad, very sad because it’s owners like Brian that will give a horrible reputation to All the owners of Raja. I have met so many beautiful, good hearted, HONEST people in Raja. He is the first one and hopefully the last to make me feel like this. This experience will not keep me from coming back to this paradise we know as the Four Kings by it will only keep me away from Sunrise Raja Ampat in Pam.
I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND SUNRISE RAJA AMPAT! I ALSO RATE IT 0 STARS….actually NEGATIVE – 5 stars……
O yea he actually wanted us to rate it 5 stars…..what a joke?!? If you choose the homestay, proceed with extreme caution. All he wants is your money. Extremely disappointed and worried that their are others like Brian.
Keep Raja Clean and Safe travels everyone….Peace and Love!
David and Preachie from Spain
I am sorry David I think you confuse and all you said about us it was not bad like you say you know one think you understand and realize We are not Resort so if you want to stay at luxery home you don’t visit us We are homestay you stay standard home and what we can provide only simple And about the cleaning We have special staff for cleaning we never ask you work or clean it’s your desire so said many things like this we don’t like because we didn’t do bad thing like say now……I think you confuse And about prices you must dissect where you stay next You understand Kri or Mansuar Gam Close with Batanta but Pam is little bit far and Transport you used not same We use speedboat not longboat price from speedboat diffirent with longboat and need different gasoline that you must understand…..So you said the words actually you don’t understand
We also accept some reviews can make repaire our servise
but if we didn’t do something bab about our servise we also want to explain that’s is not true….Thanks by Bryan
Hello Bryan. I am not confused at all. I think your attitude and arrogance cloud your judgement. You think you will always have tourists no matter what. If you continue to see bules as dollar signs, you will find yourself with less and less guests.
I clearly understand you are not a resort. If you were a resort, there wouldn’t be rubbish in the bins and the sheets would be clean when we arrived. I have never stayed in a resort nor will I ever. I feel that staying in homestays help the locals significantly more. I love the people of Papua and have never had problems like we had with you. The little things make a big difference.
Cleaning the beach is something I do whilst on all my travels, not just in Raja. I enjoying giving back to nature as it has giving me many beautiful memories over the years and hopefully will continue giving me more.
At all the homestays I visit, I choose to take the plates and leftover food to the kitchen. Its just my little way of saying thank you to the people who take the time to prepare our meals. I feel that staying at a homestay is like staying at my home. So I treat it Like being in a family. You all open your homes to us and give us the opportunity to experience real Papuan life. I just like to show my appreciation. I’m not complaining about what I choose to do, I’m complaining about what your homestay didn’t do.
About the price of the transfer, you know it was out of order. I spoke with various owners after and they agreed it was too high. But the worst thing about it is the 1 million you didn’t want to return for the Arborek trip. The nasty attitude toward us after you finally returned the money was disgraceful. How could you even think about keeping the money without providing the service? And on top of it all, ask for 400,000 for petrol we didn’t even use?!?!? You got your 400,000 on top of the over priced transfer and didn’t even say thank you to any of us. No hand shake, no nothing. You have no shame.
I expected this type of response from you. If trying to make me seem like a liar clears your conscious, go for it. We all know the truth and some people can’t handle the truth. All I know is I will never stay at your homestay nor recommend it to anyone.
Hello David once again I want tell you that about money you said here, So sorry we don’t keep the money you said your friend gave us the money to Arborek at night before they decide to go with you to Batanta you know, They want go to Arborek that’s why they paid and then tomorro we want leave to Batanta they come sunddenly said to you and you tell me that they cancle go to Arborek and they want go to Batanta and then they come and ask their money to paid to Arborek and I gave it back to them CLEAR…I think it’s so Clear You understand We don’t keep money like you say….And about 400 you said here we already order gasoline ready on the boat to go to Arborek but suddenly your friend CANCLE to Arborek then Who will pay the gasoline we already take that’s why I ask them to give 400 to pay it I think it’s Clear nothing clear here…..
And at the time before we leave I say thank you David but you don’t ear me and also the moment strong wind and rain so we must go back fast to Pam…..So I think all is clear and I hope you can understand because there’s nothing too bad with us like you said and you think…..Thank you Bryan

Welcome to Raja Ampat Sunrise Homestay
I recommend this homestay!
Big thanks to brian, who did everything to make me feel very well kept at sunrise!
I called to ask for a free room just the day before i went there and he directly organized a boat for a fair price. When i arrived the kids and whole family was very nice. The kids were so nice and helpful during my stay.
The “normal” bungalows are as elsewhere: matrace on the floor, no interieur and the verandah is a little bit small. But they used a lot of space to create a nice gardenlike landscape between the bungalows and the beach. The VIPs had windows with glass, a bett and so on. I had a normal one and that was ok. Toilets and shower were always clean and with enough water. Food was fine! Their dogs look quite well and like to play 🙂
Together with others staying in the same homestay i did the piaynemo-trip. Beside the two viewpoints a lunch and two snorkelling spots (rufas, melissas garden) were included. Brian drove me inside rufas lagoo, because i wanted to ask for a free hut at the homestay there. unfortunately there were a lot of jellyfish at piaynemo snorkelling spots (maybe because it was full moon).
The beach at sunrise is very nice, because the sand is so soft. Uniwue in raja amoat i think. During my stay unfortunately there was not so much beach as on the photo due to bad weather, waves and full moon. But for most time of the day there was more than enough space for a towel and a book in the sun or in the shadow of a nice beachpalm with a swing.
Also this beach (near to the village jetty) is an example for what the future may bring for raja ampat as i collected around sixty shoes and 40 lighters and so on. But again: this was during bad weather and the family does clean the beach.
I saw a huge group of dolphins one morning, which was nice. And i liked talking to brian about more complex questions that were hard to discuss with 60 words of bahasa at other places 😉
Just a note: there are definitely rats around (not surprising in/near a village) so watch your things!
Thanks again Brian and the whole family!
I forgot: i appreciate that sunrise refuses to cook coconut crabs. Unfortunately they are still sold alive in small small nets at piaynemo-viewpoint. I suggest to tell the sellers you will not buy any of their other products (coconut oil, coconut water and so on) as long as the crabs are sold.
@stayrajaampat.com: there were some bracelets/ wristbands sold. They were made of a hard black shiny material. Each had a unique shape. Some other tourist told me that its black coral. Do you know if it is true? Maybe you can write something about it. If it is really black coral its not just that people should not buy it. They may also face problems and fees at the custom?!
Thanks for your work!
Thanks for the headsup Annika. It does sound like the bracelets could be black coral. If it is, we can only hope that it is not live coral that’s being havested 🙁
Just to be clear about it for other readers, all of these things are for sale at the Piaynemo lookout dock, not at Raja Ampat Sunrise Homestay.
Great suggestion regarding the coconut crab sales too – we’ll add that to our page about it.
Brian is a businessman and really takes away from the island hospitality experience. We arrived at his homestay with shirt notice booking. When we arrived he allocated us a homestay that was dirty – we asked him whether we could change to another room that was vacant and next to the one he allocated us. He asked us to pay more and that there were no negotiations nor would he try to clean the mess up. Eventually Brian allowed us to stay at the clean bungalow for 1 night, but with an attitude. As such, we did not book any excursions with him, and this generated more resentment with him and therefore made our stay with him dull.
I would caution other tourists to interact with Brian with caution as he is generally incentivised by generating money in the shortest amount of time without really looking into the detail of his guests’ experience. He was unpleasant to deal with and ‘helped’ us to make our mind up about moving out of the island as soon as we could.

I stayed at Sunrise for four days just prior to Xmas 2018 and it was a good experience … Brian provides excellent snorkelling trips and always accompanies you in the water, making sure you see roving turtles or other sealife and come to no harm.
As mentioned in an earlier comment, the Homestay does get tourist groups passing through as it has quite quite a number of bungalows, and it has a wonderful beach ideal for more ‘orthodox’ tourists, though I found this a pleasant change after relative isolation at a remote homestay on Batanta …
I stayed in the VIP bungalow which was comfortable, though the reflective glass windows do mean you are rather on display at night! The actual cost for this is 500,000 IDR, rather than the 400,000 currently shown on the website. I trust Brian will rectify this oversight in due course.
A good place to stay and wonderful snorkelling (Rufus, Pam Wall, Melissa’s Garden) nearby. Piaynemo is easily accessible also from there.

We stayed at sunsire for 5 days and it has been an amazing experience.
Brian and his family are really helpful and kind. The food was great and the daily tours were amazing and cheap.
The beach is great, we saw dolphins and mantas everyday just a few meters from the beach.
We were invited to the village party for new year’s eve that was a true highlight of the holidays.
Hi Luca! Great meeting you and Giulia!
The beach at sunrise is idyllic, the snorkelling is fantastic, and the food overall very good.
As a result, it draws a lot of tourists and there are many more rooms than other homestays, so you may wish to stay here for only part of your trip and enjoy some quiet at another homestay too. While we stayed a group of 15 Slovenians came through, as well as the 10 guests already staying there, so we did need to have some patience dealing with such big groups, particularly when food was being served.
Brian was extremely helpful, speaks english and italian, and organised several cheap boats and tours for us.
The aquatic wildlife nearby was a highlight. We swam with mantas just off the main beach, and dolphins came jumping past most nights before sunset.
The VIP bungalow is large and looks comfortable, but ultimately the regular bungalows had proper beds, mosquito nets, and access to many showers and toilets. I would stay in the regular bungalows again, which are right beside the VIP.

Hi! Is it necessary to book a Sunrise Homestay bungalow in advance or can we just go there and ask for a bungalow? we will go in january.
Hi Ju
It’s not essential to book ahead, but at that time of year it’s possible that they could be full. Also – unless you were planning to take the public boat as described above – booking ahead lets you easily arrange transport from Waisai directly to the homestay.

We had a great time at Sunrise Homestay! Our host, Brian, and his family are very kind and helpful. Brian speaks English well, he is communicative and friendly. He organized us wonderful boat trips for a very correct prize, and each time we went snorkeling, he came with us and showed us the nice places and animals in the water.
We stayed at a VIP bungalow which has its own bathroom (kamar mandi). The bungalow is quite big for two people, it is suitable for a family as well.
Dear Brian, thank you for the company! We wish you success with your homestay!

Does this homestay offer diving as an activity or would it be possible to dive whilst staying here?
Thanks,
Hi Darren
There are no dive centers in the Pam Islands, so diving isn’t available at Raja Ampat Sunrise. You can quickly find homestays at which diving is possible by applying the “Diving available” Activity filter on the accommodation page. If diving is your main aim in Raja Ampat, then it’s best to stay at a place with an on-site dive center. There’s an activity filter to help you quickly find all those too.

We came to Raja Ampat Sunrise from 4 days in West Waigeo, and felt like we were back in civilisation! The homestay was neat, clean, well set up in attractive gardens. There was phone signal! One of our party discovered that if you walk to the cross up the hill, there’s enough signal for internet!
Brian and his family looked after us very well. A couple of days previously Brian had even taken a trip to West Waigeo to personally check on our travel requirements, as he had not been able to get us by phone. That is dedicated service. We quickly had trips organised to Piaynemo with a couple of snorkelling spots, and another day of snorkelling around the islands just to the south. We were very impressed that on our snorkelling trips we always had at least one guide in the boat and at least one in the water to make sure we came to no harm.
The food was excellent and plentiful. Great embarrassment was felt by the family when we were sent off with a packed lunch before they’d had a chance to do some shopping … dinner that night was extra-scrumptious to make up for it.
The family were very welcoming and made us feel at home.
Snorkelling just in front of the homestay was pretty poor, but a walk up to the jetty was much more rewarding. There are some tracks and even an actual road if you feel like going off walking – the road runs around from Saukabu village for 7km to the next village. The snorkelling trips by boat (Melissa’s Garden, Pam Wall and the islands to the south) were fantastic.
Many thanks to Brian, Paulus and family for a wonderful stay.

We stayed at Sunrise Homestay for four nights at the end of August. The homestay is great and is right on the sea. Brian and his family take great care of their guests. The offered excursions (Piaynemo and Sunset tour) were also excellent. We would stay here again anytime. Many thanks to Brian and his family for the great care, Kai and Claudia from Germany :-).

We stayed for 5 days. Perfect. The family are wonderful. If you want a really good island experience, Sunrise Homestay is the place. It is accessible to great sights and good snorkling. The amenities are clean, the dining area is a great place to meet with others and eat good food. Bryan and Paulos have so many eccellent ideas for the Homestay and are constantly building on the infrastructure. The little fishing village next door is friendly. It’s an adventure trying to find the kiosk! We absolutely loved our time here. It’s the people, the ambience and the stunning location. Thankyou for the fun trips.

I stayed at this homestay for 4D3N and that was the best experience I could ever get. Thanked our hosts (Paul, Brian, Ida, Shalom and her mother, and other family member) for their warmest hospitality. I would recommend this homestay for sure. You would feel like home.
The homestay and bathroom was very clean (5/5), the food was delicious (4/5), the beach was PERFECT (5/5). You could snorkel in front of your homestay and see many fishes.
Beach sand feels like powder, very fine beach sand. That was the finest beach sand I ever feel.
You should try the coconut there. It was very sweet.
And caution from Agas (just Google it).
Thank you Paul, Brian, and Ida.
What’s agas? No accurate google results
Bahasa Indonesia for sandflies Akshay 😉

Paradisiac place, simply beautiful. The beach next to the hotel is incredible. Some people saw dolphins swimming in the afternoon next to the coast. The staf is super nice and they offer to take you to pianemo which is not far away. The only problem for me is that there were rats.

We arrived in paradies. Good beach, overwhelming sunraise and clean bungalow with mosquito net and
a veranda with seaview. The food is good, the grill fish was so delicious!
We were a group of 6 and did Piemoneo Island with Brian.
We went to amazing snorkeling places, he and his crew always took care while we are snorkeling; thats important about the changing currents.
Also around your bungalow snorkeling is very good!
Highly recommended this place, with nice people. Brian speaks English!

Hi .
I’m travelling to Raja ampat and I’m looking for Sandy beaches , good snorkel in a good place .
I heard about Fam islands and according to waht I have seen in photos , look amazing ! Do you know the schedule and price of the public ferry from Sorong to the islands and go back to sorong ? ( I really want to save money)
I really want to go to Pyanemo to see the view from the top , I read that it’s close from Fam islands which makes it cheaper, doesn’t it ?
I would really appreciate an answer from you since I have been looking for some further information on internet but I have been unable to . Thanks !!
Hi Pablo
Daily public ferries only run between Waisai and Sorong. They don’t go to the Pam Islands. You’ll find the schedules for those on this page.
There is a public slow boat once a week between Sorong, Batanta and the Pam Islands. See our Pam Islands guide for how to catch that.
Yes, it would be cheaper to visit Piaynemo from a Pam Islands homestay than from those on other islands.

Hi!
How about prices to get to Homestay? Are there usually more then one person every day going to share price? And tours to Wayag is there usually peoples to share price?
Hi Liga
The price for transfers between Waisai and Raja Ampat Sunrise is quoted above in the Transport / Getting there section. There are also prices for dropoff/pickup to other locations.
The Pam Islands do not receive as many guests as locations closer to Waisai, so it’s best to assume that you will travel alone. You are welcome to join and post in our Stay Raja Ampat Travellers’ Forum on facebook to see if you can meet up with other who would like to visit Pam.

Our experience in the Sunrise homestay was very short since we only spent one night and in fact we arrived on a rainy day but afterwards we could walk along the beach and have a swim.
The bungalow and the area where it is located very clean. The meals were acceptable and the next day we could enjoy the sunrise as we woke up in good weather but we already had to move to our last destination Kri.
Conclusion, short time to comment but we believe that the place well deserves to be a couple of days more to explore.
Jordi & Nuria – I think assigning 3 stars to a homestay because you arrived on a rainy day, and only stayed a short time, does a disservice to this homestay. You have positive comments about the homestay itself (clean, food fine) so why only 3 stars?
Unfortunately Gilles & Lydie, who wrote a glowing review below, forgot to rate the homestay, so if someone (like myself) was checking out homestays based only on ratings, I would have skipped over this one because all it shows is 3 star.
Just sayin’
