Details

Raja Ampat Kalabia Homestay lies on the north shore of Pulau Arborek, about a hundred metres west of Arborek’s jetty.

Five private, over-water bungalows and a 2-room family over-water bungalow are available. (The family bungalow rooms can be booked separately. If you want both rooms, please select Over-water – Room in a bungalow, quantity two on the booking form.)

Despite being right in Arborek village, the location is quite private, as the bungalows are screened by the mangroves that separate the homestay from the shore.

Raja Ampat Kalabia Homestay’s family bungalow bedrooms are separated by a breezeway which provides access, cooling and better privacy than the more usual shared wall affords. Each bedroom sleeps two on mattresses on the floor. Bed linen, pillows, bolsters and mosquito nets are provided in all bedrooms, and all bungalows have multiple power outlets and room light switches fitted.

Meals are served in an over water dining room, and free drinking water and tea and coffee making supplies are provided there for guests.

Guests share a two-room bathroom building on land. The concrete-floored bathroom provide bucket bathing and a western style toilet in separate rooms.

Electricity is from village supply and is usually available at all times except from 0700 to about 1000. Telkomsel’s Arborek tower provides a strong 4G signal.

There are shops in the village that sell food, basic supplies and cold drinks, but (as everywhere in Raja Ampat) there’s no effective waste disposal or recycling available. If you don’t want to contribute to the trashing of paradise, please take all your inorganic waste away with you when you leave.

English is spoken at Raja Ampat Kalabia Homestay.

Long stay discount: 12% discount if staying longer than 7 nights.

Transport / Getting there

Transport between Waisai and Raja Ampat Kalabia Homestay costs IDR 1,000,000 each way. A longboat that can carry a maximum of 4 passengers is used, and the trip price is shared by passengers.

Activities

Diving and snorkelling

Arborek Dive Shop is a short walk away, and is happy to take Kalabia guests diving at any of the famous Dampier Strait and Kabui Bay dive sites. Arborek Dive Shop also provides credit card payments for Kalabia.

Be sure to bring snorkelling gear, as the waters beneath Arborek's jetty and the reefs off the island's eastern end are special. Arborek is also the closest accommodation to the famed Manta Point and Manta Sandy sites where you can dive or snorkel with mantas.

White sand beaches extend on either side of the mangrove patch that screen Raja Ampat Kalabia from the shore. Walking sharks and blacktip reef sharks frequent the shallows, and there are also hosts of small critters sheltering in the mangroves and seagrass flats. Entering the water at low tide requires care, but the jetty is a short walk away, and from there you can easily snorkel the dropoff back toward the homestay.

Sightseeing

Arborek village often mounts cultural performances, and production of handcrafted souvenirs is thriving. Kalabia Homestay can organise boat trips to any sightseeing or snorkelling sites you might want to visit, and Arborek is small enough that you can easily drop in to the other 11 homestays to find travelling companions to share costs with.

  • Stephanus and his family do a good job of making you feel at home. All the meals I had with them during my 4 night stay were good and varied. Bungalows are spacious and location over water is beautiful. A second shower is being built as we speak and will be a welcome addition. Really enjoyed my stay at kalabia and plan to come back next year to enjoy the snorkeling around arborek and magical swims with Manta’s. Thx for everything, see you soon! ♥️

  • I had a really lovely stay at Kalabia with Stephanos. The over water bungalows are beautiful and the food is usually very good, although some meals were a bit hit and miss. The mosquito net was quite holey so I recommend bringing your own. The location is perfect and I was really happy staying here. My room had a table, chair, fan, insect repellent plug-in and sun lounger in the decking. I felt very welcome with Stephanos and he didn’t hesitate to help me with any small problems and to arrange transport to Waisai. I hope to stay here again!

  • A very welcoming homestay in Arborek. Stephanus is always ready to help and show people around. The coral reefs around the island are magnificent, and the homestay’s jetty provides easy access during high tide. A second shower would be a welcome addition to improve the flow of guests.

  • closed to the sea and the housereef, nice island with village
meal was reheated on the second day and not tasty
homestay provide snorkelexcursions, but for snorkeling at shark point they feed the sharks. this is a no-go and can be very dangerous for snorklers and swimmers

  • We stayed as a couple for 3 nights in this homestay during December 2025. It was an incredible experience. The staff was very kind and the communication was good. The food was really good, we enjoyed it a lot, and was definitely enough for everyone. The bugalow was good and very large, we really appreciated the calm and quiet location as well as the marine life you can spot from it.
Arborek is really beautiful and worth some days spent in there, and this homestay is highly recommended.

  • We really enjoyed our stay at Kalabia and would recommend it as a base to dive Arborek, although there is no diving on-site you can dive with Arborek Dive Shop which is just down the block.

Stefanus and his son James are very friendly, speaks good-enough English, and can help you arrange transfers or snorkeling tours.

The food was good and varied and there was usually more than enough of it.

The snorkeling just out front of the huts is excellent once you walk passed the sandbar.

Some of the huts are quite cramped, I would recommend either of the huts at far ends which are roomier, and the hut at the eastern end has a privacy screen which is a nice bonus.

One recommendation, you may want to bring a hammock as not all of the huts have hammocks and some of those that do the hammocks are really tiny.

We also found biting insects to be an issue here so you should plan to bring long clothing for sleeping, or stock up on good bug spray.

  • Raja Ampat Kalabia Homestay excels in its overwater bungalows in good condition, where fish swim directly underneath and perfect snorkeling is possible right from your veranda. Arborek is a great little island with a nice village and very friendly people, creating an authentic, relaxing vibe despite limited internet; the dive shop is just 5 minutes away. While the food is simple local fare that’s not always standout in size or quality and pickup communication could be improved, the natural beauty and warm hosts make it a memorable stay—I’d happily return to Arborek, but if food portions and quality don’t significantly improve, I’d choose another homestay next time.

  • Overall, we had a good stay with Stephano and his family, although a few things were missing or we didn’t like.

Accommodation: the bungalow was great (we stayed in the one on the far right), it was spacious, clean and we had a beautiful view from the terrace. We could see lots of fish right in front of our terrace (but no sharks or rays). We also had more privacy and comfort than the other bungalows as there was a privacy screen on the terrace and steps leading directly into the water. Unfortunately, we were the only ones without a bed/bed base; the mattress was on the floor. This didn’t make it any more humid, but it was a shame as it was less comfortable. When it rained, no water came into the bungalow at all.

The island: Arborek is a small island that you can walk around very quickly. There are two diving schools, a warung and two grocery stores where you can buy biscuits, crisps, a few essential items, and cold drinks and beers.
The snorkelling in front of the accommodation is very good, even if it’s not the best we’ve done in Raja Ampat. You can also see a multitude of fish at the jetty.

The food: this was really the disappointment of the stay. The quantities were really insufficient, and there was no variety at all. Always rice, vegetables and chicken. Two mini chicken legs per person, and the one time we didn’t get that, there was only one hard-boiled egg per person. Breakfast was the same, minimalist, two small pieces of cake or two pisang goreng per person. We were starving for three days, and this was the only homestay where that happened to us; the others offered very varied meals that were generous in quantity.

The restaurant area is pleasant, with mineral water, hot water, coffee and tea available. There is a fridge if needed when the electricity is on between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m.
Overall, the place is really cute and cosy.

The welcome/activities: this was also what we liked least. The family is nice, but there was no warmth, no desire to share moments or a few words. They were building a new bungalow and spent all their time on that rather than looking after their guests, which was a shame. We had to push a little each time to do activities, and there was even one day when we couldn’t do any because one of them had gone out on the boat for the day. The only activity was going to see the manta rays, on a day when the conditions were clearly not favourable. He knew this but took us there anyway, knowing full well that we would never see any. We paid for nothing. On the boat: only one guide, when there are normally two for safety reasons, no water, no ladder. As for the prices of transfers and excursions, they announce one price at the outset and then end up charging a higher price with frankly lame excuses. They have a table in the restaurant with the prices for each transfer/excursion, which is good for transparency, except that you can expect it to end up being a little more expensive, for no valid reason, and especially compared to other homestays, the prices are really exaggerated.

In summary, great accommodation, beautiful island, but I would not particularly recommend this homestay because of the insufficient food and the welcome/activities.

  • Very nice place, with a lot of corals in front of the homestay. The food was very good and the bungalow are very clean. Thank you James for your welcome !

  • Arborek is an absolut must-see, the reef is incredibly beautiful, as are the nearby islands and snorkeling spots! Stefanus may seem a little grumpy when you first meet him but he is actually super nice and friendly. We had two beautiful bungalows next to each other and enjoyed it very much. Absolutely recommended

  • Had a fair stay at the Homestay. The place is clean enough and we had the larger room which was very bright and more private. The food was ok but fairly certain we had the same fish for lunch re- served to us for dinner- by that stage it was dry and inedible. By comparison to other Homestays it didn’t rate high on the food front. There was very little fruit served and the food was clams and repetitive. Organisationally they were not great. We had organised in advance to be collected from Kri and no one came – after ringing and ringing finally we got through but needed to be insistent that they organise a boat as they were saying their boat was out on a snorkel trip with other guests . They said they forgot their phone. It seems staying on top of visitors coming and going is not good and can leave you high and dry which is disappointing . It was difficult to organise excursions and when we did they were 4 hours late. When we did finally go- the excursion was fun and they made a good day out seeing the sights. A lunch box was requested in advance so we could make a long day out – they forgot and this delayed the trip further to get that organised last minute. As it was our first Homestay we were prepared to accept this lack of organisation was probably due to ‘island time’ but other home stays were more organised accommodating and efficient. The island of Arborek rates highly however and the position of the Homestay is great for both trips out and a day hanging out on the island. The home reef is very pretty.

  • A wonderful place to immerse yourself in nature and relax. My husband and I stayed at Kalabia from October 13th to 17th and had a wonderful time. Stefanus and his family are a bit reserved but always available, welcoming, and smiling. We went on some wonderful trips and highly recommend it for snorkeling in front of the homestay. We could jump into the sea directly from our room! Just be careful of the currents. From our room’s terrace, we enjoyed both sunrise and sunset views, and a starry sky we hadn’t seen in years. The local food was simple but good. The bathrooms are Indonesian-style, but clean. Highly recommended!

Kalabia Homestay is a lovely accommodation located on the edge of the small island of Arborek. From my experience and what I’ve heard from other travelers, Kalabia seems to be one of the “better” homestays on the island. The overwater bungalows are quite new, with beautiful sea views and a hammock in each one.
The house reef is fantastic – full of life and great for snorkeling. There’s another nice reef on the opposite side of the island, but the house reef here is even better.
There are two hosts who are always friendly and do their best to fulfill guests’ wishes quickly and to everyone’s satisfaction.
The food is similar to other homestays – simple but good. Breakfast usually consists of fried bananas or pancakes, and lunch and dinner are rice with vegetables and fish.
Both hosts speak some English and are helpful, offering tips and trying to anticipate what guests might need.
There’s only one dive center on the island – Arborek Dive Shop – just a 5-minute walk away.
I can highly recommend Kalabia Homestay. If you’re planning to stay on Arborek, this is the place to choose.

  • I stayed 3 nights and it was amazing. The personnel very attentive with the guests. Meals good enough taking in mind how remote is this island. Loved the view of the room to the ocean and the hammock in front of the sea, and thrle entrance to the rooms next to the mabgrooves. No mosquitos or mud in thr mangrooves, they are beach mangrooves. The only thing I think it could improve is having more powerful fans, because sometimes that is necessary to not feel very hot. Besides that, everything was amazing.

  • We stayed at Kalabia for 5 nights. Everything was perfect. As planned we got picked up from our homestay. They took great care by packing our luggage so it doesn’t get splashed on transfer (even though our bags are waterproof). Then they took us straight to the homestay. The bungalow was clean and really beautiful with big windows overlooking the ocean and the beach of arborek. there is also a little terrace that you can climb down to the seagrass covered area below the bungalows. The life down there is incredible. From walking sharks to baby blacktips… Just beautiful. Behind the bungalows are some mangrove trees that grow towards the bungalows and create an amazing atmosphere. This is supported by a lot of small details such as lights, that lead the pathway at night.
The family was really friendly and everybody always had a smile on their faces. The food was great as well. We had a lot of variety and liked every single dish that was waiting for us. Absolutely amazing cook!
When it sadly was time to leave, it was easy to organize the transfer to our next homestay.
We really enjoyed our stay here, and would love to come back again. Thank you!!!

  • Enjoyed my time here at Kalabia. It’s a pretty simple Homestay in comparison to others, but it definitely suffices.

The house reef is very good and you can get great sunsets also from the house jetty too. The owners and the family pretty much keep themselves to themselves, with James (the son) being on hand to organise any tours/trips etc.

    Would definitely stay again.

  • Enjoyed my time here at Kalabia. It’s a pretty simple Homestay in comparison to others, but it definitely suffices.

  • The homestay is run by a real family living in the village. The hosts are friendly and the food was simple but good.
We saw many baby sharks and fish just under the jetty and restaurant. Sometimes you can see dolphins jumping while laying in the hammock.
Beautiful sunset and the house reef next to the white boey in the front is also great for snorkeling. We saw many big black tips and bumphead parrot fish.
The only thing I would improve is the moskito net. Not much room for sleeping when you are two people, because the net is laying really low. But we used some shoelaces to adjust it, it was fine after all.

  • Really loved staying at Kalabia Homestay.
I feel like Arborek in general is a very cute, beautiful and good island to start your adventure in Raja Ampat. Small, but enough things to do.

Kalabia has a really nice house reef (a few minutes swim away from the water bungalows), which gets better the closer you swim to the jetty. You’ll frequently encounter small reef sharks, beautiful fish like cuttlefish, parrot fish and the (dangerous) lion fish. And obviously thousand other ones 😉

The homestay was basic, but perfectly situated on the water. All bungalows had hammocks and a spacious balcony area. Good spot the see the sunset on your leftside.
The bungalows also feel a bit secluded, because behind you there are some mangroves, before that the (basic but fine!) toilets/shower and a chill area and then there is the “road”. So that gave it an extra, exclusive feeling.

Easy to arrange tours, which I would say are fairly priced. You can negotiate a bit with with either James (the son) or the father Stefanus. The family is very friendly and also they are focussed on their own thing (which is good, they have their own life and are not just there because of tourism).

I enjoyed the lunch and dinner, was good food. Sometimes fish, chicken or just vegetarian. Breakfast was not so interesting nor plentiful, but this goes for almost all homestays in Raja Ampat.

    Points of improvement:

    – Better mattress (it was fine, but I experienced better ones elsewhere)
    – Mosquito net hung too close to the bed, so it took some “space”. Could’ve been a better way of hanging it.
    – Actively replacing toiletpaper (although not a big issue)

All the best to the family!

  • Nice place, cute village. A good first island for your trip in Raja Ampat. Manta point near to the island and a beautiful reef. The bungalow overwater is great and we slept well. One little improvement can be done : we had only slices of bread for the breakfast

  • We were there in november 2024. The 4 days we stayed there was ok, but the bucket for the toilet paper in the toilet was not empty when we arrived and for the 4 days we stayed there, they never emptied the bucket. We know that everything is very basic on the islands, but emptying a bucket is not that much work.
We also have a bad experience with Gitta’s diving school ( Arborek Dive Shop ). She herself was not on our tour. On the boat there were divers and we were snorkelers. The divers were dropped and we, snorkelers were left alone in the water. The captain would sail away for a while and come back. Unfortunately he stayed away a long time and the other boats had to go get our captain, telling him that we are in the middle of the sea, waiting for the boat. They also have no idea where the divers will come back to the surface. When the captain finally took us (snorkelers) on board, we waited for the divers to come to the surface.
The captain was sleeping (snoring) instead of looking out for the divers. We did wake him up because the divers were on the surface and at the same time other boats were also calling for the captain to pick up his divers.
This is really not okay that they don’t take any responsibility and play with people’s lives. It was a terrible day trip.
I could not enjoy my snorkeling trip.
PS: we have a movie from our storing captain.

  • I was excited to stay at Kalabia Homestay. When I was in Raja Ampat last year all the guests who stayed there really enjoyed it. I was shocked at how terrible my stay was.

When I arrived I was told I’d be served all meals in my bungalow, because there was a large group of Chinese people staying in all of the other rooms. When I said I would be happy to eat with the others I was told it was not a good idea. I went to the dining area and soon discovered why. This group had brought woks, propane cook stoves, bowls, chopsticks, food and ingredients from China and we’re cooking their lunches and dinners in the dining area. There was no room for me to sit anywhere.

The homestay owner was taking them out spearfishing everyday. He was also taking them out from 10:00 until midnight each evening to kill sleeping fish, octopuses, and eels. They would return with bags of dead animals.

When the Raja Ampat Marine Authority visited and told both the guests and owner that they were breaking the law the owner and guests ignored it. The owner took them out spearfishing again the very same night the authorities told me them they couldn’t.

My room was nice. The “fresh” water was brackish. The toilets were filthy – the trash cans were never emptied and we went days with no toilet paper.

    • Thank you for reporting this Pamela.

It’s actually possible that no laws were being broken, because the waters around Arborek are a “Sasi and Traditional Utilisation Zone“, for which the rules are that “… Tourists are only permitted to fish with permission from the Traditional Chief, and under the supervision of the local community.”

We are investigating though, because, although possibly a legal activity, this kind of “fishing” is certainly not in the spirit of the Homestay Association sustainability standards!

  • My family and I booked 4 nights at Kalabia, We left after the second night.
    Good things:
Stefanus and his family were nice.
The homestay has beautiful sunset views and is quiet.
The diving from Arborek was mind blowing
There are corals 100m in front off the bungalow (but the best ones are at the right side)
You can see marine life under the bungalow, many baby sharks, rays and we saw an octopus!
They are helpful organizing trips to pianemo and other snorkeling areas.
    Not so good things:
There were rats, or maybe it was always the same one. We gave her a name because was sharing the bungalow with us. I recommend to not have any food in the bungalow and keet your bags always closed.
The toilets weren’t very clean. We were probably 15 people using them, maybe they should be clean a little bit more often.
The food wasn’t great but it was edible. Not great variety, sometimes not enough quantity of the good stuff, always enough noodles and rice. we missed having fruit, in 3 days we only had one piece papaya at lunch.

  • My partner and I stayed for 5 nights at Kalabia Homestay. Our bungalow was simple but really clean and we enjoyed to pass our time on it 🙂
We really enjoyed the food, which was simple but really delicious and different between the different meal.
Stefanus and his family were discreet but very helpful and caring.
From the homestay we could see walking sharks, blacktip sharks, baby rays and plenty of different fish. Between dives at Arborek Dive Shop, which is really near, we went snorkeling from the homestay or from the jetty situated just a couple of minutes far.
Our experience at Kalabia Homestay was very positive and we really recommand 🙂

  • My partner and I stayed for 2 weeks at Kalabia Homestay. Our bungalow have got upgraded for a new one, much larger with a nice view and convenient furnitures. We really enjoyed the food, which was simple but delicious. Stefanus used to bring us fresh coconuts. • We stayed for 4 nights in late March/early April 2024. Stefanus the owner meet us in Waisai and transferred us to Arborek. He was helpful in organising our transfer onto Rufas Island. Our room was small but it had a small verandah and a sundeck making the space bigger. The views were very good across to Gam Island. The seagrass in front of the rooms seemed to be always alive with fish. Approx. 100 meters further out is the edge of the channel with sloping reef. Here we saw both reef sharks and turtles. Food was OK, basic but sufficient. There was a fridge where we could store our drinks purchased from the local shops. I think there’s at least 4 on Arborek. We dived with Arborek Dive Shop for 3 days and found out that the owner Githa was away in Jakarta and that the staff left in charge seemed to only want to do the minimum. We had a range of guides with the best being Atto. We’d do 2 dives in the morning but they didn’t want to dive anymore in the afternoon. The gear was aging and some seals definitely needed replacing as they leaked. Unfortunately of the 3 dive shops we used in Raja Ampat this was the lowest in our opinion.

Photos of the homestay need to be updated. There are now more bungalows both at Kalabia and their neighbour homestay which now has villas out to the waterfront as well. Meaning your view is more 180 rather than 270 mentioned in the description.

  • Huts were quite small so had to live out of the backpacks for the stay. Food was definately not as good as other homestays. Organised snorkelling with them and transfer to waisai which was all good. Nice area outside the huts for chilling. Cleanliness could be better

  • We had a plesent stay on Arborek with Kalabia. Pros: very flexible arranging trips and transfers, electricity almost 24h. Great house reef with mantas passing by, nice selection of books in book exchange. Cons: the food was just ok comparing to other homestays, mosquito nets need to be replaced or washed at least, rooms were quite small (not much space to unpack)

  • Siamo stati a Kalabia 4 notti. Ottimo soggiorno, buon cibo e accoglienza familiare.
Escursioni a Manta point e Pyanemo eccezionali.

  • Lovely homestay with nice rooms and dining area over the water. Plentiful variations of fish and rice served for lunch and dinner, sweet breakfast in the mornings. Stephanus and his son James are on hand to help arrange boat activities and transfers. James took us snorkelling to see the mantas which was excellent, and he arranged for his cousin to take us to Pianeymo on a day trip. The tours were cheaper than most places we visited, it’s likely you’ll need to adapt to the availability of their boat. Communication could be better or more organised for tours, but the service is great when arranged. Perhaps a white board displaying the weeks tours and availability could be a good addition to the dining area. The baby black tip sharks swimming under the homestay each evening was adorable. The snorkelling from the jetty to the homestay is really quite incredible.

  • We spent 4 nights at Kalabia Homestay and had a great time. The over water bungalow was basic but clean and everything we expected for the price we paid. We loved snorkelling straight off the bungalow to the jetty and back. The marine life was amazing and we always saw something new. Stefanus and family were welcoming. Everything ran smoothly beginning with our transfer from Wasai. The food was good, varied and always enough. Almost always including locally caught fish. It was lovely being on Arborek Island, an opportunity to see local village life (and buy cold beers at any number of local stores!). We highly recommend this homestay.

  • We’ve spend 5 nights at Kalabia. Stefanus is a great host. Food is mostly rice with fresh fish and some vegetables, but we requested some additional fresh sambal every meal, which was delicious. I would say the view from the deck is one of the best features of Kalabia. You have a 270 degree view and every evening and morning we saw lots of marine life in the water (including sharks). The rooms do get hot during the day and it takes a couple of hours before the heat exits the rooms at night, since there’s only a small fan in the room, so I had some issues falling asleep every night because of the heat. Also, the power was mostly off between 7am – 4pm when we were at Kalabia. Arborek has a great vibe as well. Diving with Arborek Dive Shop is amazing. The shop nearby sells cold drinks. I also have a recommendation to always double check about the costs for a trip and ask James to be transparent about the costs for the boat trips, since we we had some ‘issues’ with this for 2 times. Overall, our stay was very good.

  • I have absolutely loved everything about Kalabia Homestay and would definitely return if I have the chance! <3

Stefanus and his family are great hosts; he speaks good English, is very humble, he brought us coconuts and made sure everyone has everything they need. The homestay is very clean and the girls in the kitchen are friendly and accommodate any special requests (lunch boxes, special food requirements, etc.).
The food in Kalabia was diverse and really tasty, it stood out from other accommodations I have visited and also from other accommodations on the island, as I have heard from other travellers. It was also the only accommodation, where the guests had access to the fridge to store personal things inside. The electricity runs throughout the day.

The location is at the edge of the village, which is perfect for a short walk to either side; to see the sunrise in the east or the sunset in the west, as well as close to a small local shop and the jetty for snorkling or watching the stars at night.
The villagers are very friendly, the whole island is clean and is truly an amazing experience being able to mix with them.

I've read that someone wrote there is no direct sun on the porches of the bungalows…which is true for the most bungalows, but it is absolutely perfect, because one can relax on the deck around mid day, when the heat is crazy elsewhere.
Be aware that with extremely high UV index in these areas, you can still easily get badly burnt between 8.30am to 3pm, so make sure to apply sun screen, even if just resting on the deck in the shade…the sun rays bounce from the sea.

Besides the jetty location, snorkling on the reef right in front of Kalabia is also one of the best ones; I have spotted sharks, turtles and even a manta right in the front! Baby black tip reef sharks regularly swim under the bungalows at night and star & moon gazing is truly mesmerizing.

Arborek is a whole different experience than other islands and I would warmly recommend everyone to put it on your list…Kalabia is there to make your stay comfortable and dreamy! All the best to the family! <3

  • We stayed at Kalabia for 6 nights. In the beginning we were 3 people sharing one bungalow, I do not recommend this because the bungalow is really small and you don’t have room for your bags inside the bungalow. The bungalows are perfect for 2 people, it contains all the things that are necessary however the mosquito nets contains a lot of holes and need to be replaced. The downside of this homestay is that there is no sun on the front of the bungalow. You don’t see the sunset or sunrise because the other bungalows are in the way of the view. Stefano and the family are amazing and super friendly. The food was alright. The reef around Arborek is good for snorkeling.

  • We stayed 3 night at Kabilia in December 2023. Location is great for snorkling and going around the village. Negative points is 1/Food really not the best we had in RA homestay 2/ Room lighting broken and multiple holes in the mosquito net to be fixed.

    Fuyez !

  • We loved our stay on Arborek at Kalabia. Arborek is an amazing tiny island and you can walk around it within 30 minutes- that means you just need to walk a few minutes to get to perfect sunset or sunrise spots and the sunsets are simply incredible!
The houses are built on the water, which gives you a beautiful view and we also felt there were not many mosquitos due to that. You can directly from the homestay enter the water and start snorkeling. The reef is beautiful and goes all around the island, marine life is great including sharks, turtles and lots of fish. We also saw some dolphins once in the distance.

The rooms and facilities are simple but have everything you need. Food was good but after almost a week it got a bit repetitive, so maybe bring some snacks if you stay longer. You won’t be coming here for a luxurious experience, but for enjoying nature 🙂

We’ve spent most of our days diving in the morning with Arborek Dive Shop (highly recommended) and then the afternoons reading, snorkeling and relaxing. Kalabia was a perfect base for that!

    Some Tips:
    – bring your own snorkeling gear (not easy to rent there) and water shoes
    – Bring enough sun screen and make sure to cover yourself well on the 1h+ boat ride from wasai to protect yourself from the sun

  • Was a really nice Bungalow and a nice stay. Stefano is really cool and the food is good!
We just had a mattress on the floor, other Bungalows had beds. What really nice is, is nearby Shops where you can buy Snacks and cold Drinks!:)

  • Very nice place, over the water overseeing the baby sharks at high tide, with sunset and sunrise views.
The food is good, and so is the snorkeling. The family is also very friendly and willing to give advice.
Only dark spot, our mattress was not queen size but smaller. They were queen size on the other bungalows.
    Very nice stay whatsoever

  • Our stay at Kalabia was great. Details of the add and photos were correct. Stefanus and his son James were easy to deal with. We will return.
Also Githa and Marcel at Arborek Dive Shop were easy to deal with.

  • We stayed at Kalabia from 27th to 29th of March. We were dropped by Mandarin homestay (family of Kalabia on Gam) and welcomed by James and his brother.

Bungalows are well built, with a nice veranda in front. In our bungalow the mattress (not the best we had) was laying on the ground, other bungalow had a bed. Toilets and shower were clean. Food was good, but they forgot to tell us when it was ready and waiting on the table. Overall communication can be improved.

Most of our stay we had rainy / stormy weather. Nevertheless, we had a pleasant stay and enjoyed the housereef in front of the bungalows towards the jetty. We saw moray eals, 5 eagle rays, wobbegong shark and 2 mantas (!) during our snorkeling.

We also went to Manta Sandy with an organised boat trip and saw 3 mantas, however visibility decreased rapidly due to approaching storm. Therefore snorkeling at the nearby reef was not possible. Before leaving we asked James if it was a good moment to head for Manta Sandy, and his answer was yes. However, it might have been wise to wait for the storm to pass by…

Transfer to our next homestay was well arranged.

  • We stayed arround 1 week there. We had a very bad experience there. I forgot my torch at a dive center. They delivered it to the homestay. The son of the owner didn‘t gave us the torch and kept it for 2 days in his room. Even when we left He didn’t gave us the torch. We had a lot of troubles to get it back.

  • I stayed at Kalabia homestay for 7 nights. The rooms are wonderful. I loved spending time resting at the hammock, watching sharks from the patio at night, stargazing, and the lovely sunset. Host Stefanus and his family are wonderful. They were very caring about everything I needed. We also had music nights where Stefanus and his son played guitar and sang for us. The food was wonderful and the menu had so much variety on this small island. Everyone was very friendly. I would want to stay there again on my next Raja Ampat trip.

  • We stayed at the Kalabia for 3 nightd in february. You have a nice direct sea view incl. dolphins, walking sharks and black tips right in front of our small terrace.
The food was very good, many choices compared to other homestays. It was clean and the owners were super nice and friendly. Unfortunately I have to point out that the bed was not good, very used matress. I would not recommend to stay here if you are older or have back issues. Maybe it was just our room.

  • We stayed for 7 nights in this homestay and plan to stay there again. The rooms are of a high standard, and include small touches that made a big difference to comfort including table and chairs as well as deck chair on the very wide deck and a clothesline with plentiful pegs. Stefanus is constantly working on improvements and was building beautiful timber beds for the rooms at the time of our stay.

The homestay is close to the dive centre and there is great snorkelling directly in front. We saw mantas leaping out of the water from our room most days. The rooms are quite private as they are screened from the island by an attractive mangrove patch.

During most of the year(apparently not the wet season) the rooms receive the prevailing breeze, making them much cooler than the other side of the island.

The food was good and always sufficient in quantity. It did get a little repetitive, but we found it to be delicious.

We look forward to our return and to spending more time with this lovely family.

  • Nice stay here on Aborek. Good food and a nice place to connect to other travellers. Stefanos is very helpful! Close to the aborek dive shop for diving. They have hammocks and the water beneath is full of Life. Can recommend.

  • Definitely the best place to stay on Arborek. The view to the ocean is great the bungalows are big and clean with a nice verandah. Food could be better, sometimes only eggs and noodles. Stefanus son James, his brother and his sisters took very good care of us. We had a great snorkeling trip to a fabulous and very healthy reef. In the evening they surprised me with singing and a birthday cake.
Thank you very much … Injo nabor.

  • We stayed at Kalabia for 5 nights and we really enjoyed our time here. The food was sometimes not enough in quanitity and often repetitive but tasty, the rooms were clean yet basic and Stefanus was a great host who accomodated everything we could possibly need. It’s a nice location right over the ocean with dolphin sightings and a great sunset. We had a great time and would recommend this homestay to anyone looking for a comfortable place on Arborek.

  • We spent two fantastic nights at Kalabia while we were on a Dive Safari. Very nice Homestay, very clean, taking pride in the area. The overwater bungalows give you the access to snorkeling straight off the deck to underwater nursery then able to swim to Aborek Jetty with lots of fish. Sunset views are paradise.

  • Kalabia was without a doubt our favourite place to stay during our Raja Ampat trip. The family are wonderful, so sweet and welcoming and made every trip so enjoyable. The trips are super reasonably priced and the Family went out of their way to make sure we got to do and see everything we wanted e.g. going out to find manta rays (which we saw so many of!) taking us up the current by boat multiple times so we could see them again and again!
Thank you Stefanus and James for all of the trips and information you are awesome, thank you Ibu for the food and thank you Jonas and Poppy for the most gorgeous smiley welcomes every day.

We hope to return one day!

  • AMAZING!

Absolutely loved this place. The bungalows over water, the super friendly family, the manta’s in front of the bungalows, the food.. all of it.

We took several trips with James and his father and brother and it was absolutely worth it. Pyanemu and manta’s. Many of them!

The family really made the trips great and comfortable. Checking where the manta’s were, checking the current, making sure we were safe. One of our favorite homestays in R4. Ibije!

    Highly recommended. 5+ stars!

    Salam hangat,

  • One of the most idylic homestays on Arborek. Kind owner, who takes care of the homestay. A new bungalow was just built by him. Inside the bungalow it isn’t very big but for me it was enough space. Outside you get a very nice big terrace with chairs, a hammock and sunbed. Most beautiful views All day & night, small blacktips hunting in the shallow water between sunset and sunrise. Food is very tasty and varies trough the days, breakfast simple as expected. Heard from other guests that Stefanus’ wife (who wasn’t there when I visited unfortunately) cooks even beter! Would like to stay here once more when I visit RA again. Thank you all for your kind hospitalty!

  • Don’t stay at this homestay! We stayed in two homestays in Arborek during our 6 days there, 4 of them in Kalabia. For us this homestay has a lot of things to improve and is expensive if you compare with others.

First of all the food is not enough! We were 7 people at the same time and we had one little portion of fish per person (even one night we had one medium size fish for the 7!). Of course they cook vegetables, rice, tempe… but this is super cheap food for them taking into account the amount of money they charge you per night. The dining room is always dirty, both the floor and the tables. The toilet is not clean and very uncomfortable.

The family is not friendly, they sometimes don’t say even hello… We had a trip booked with the owner for snorkeling in Sawadanek (Mansuar) and he didn’t appear in all the day, so we had to go to another homestay and ask for a boat. Taking into account that the day before we went with him to Pyanemo and we confirm our trip to Sawadanek! When he appeared at night, he didn’t mention anything about his dissapearance!

Regarding the bungalows, we felt no privacy at all. They are very close, even in two of them you have to share the terrace.

  • I stayed for 5 days at Kalabia homestay in October and would absolutely recommend it! The bungalow was simple but comfortable and very clean, it had a table, a fan and plenty of lines to hang clothes and wet gear. The bathroom and shower room were also very clean.

The porch was the best part, with a couple of chairs and a hammock where you can easily waste a few hours watching the beautiful view. The deck is large enough to have some parts with sunshine all day, in case you want to work on your tan. You can also have a good view of the sunset to the left and (I’m guessing, as I never woke up for it) of sunrise to the right. I saw blacktips sharks swimming under the deck a couple of times also!

  • I spending 5 days at this homestay. I wasn’t happy about this place at all. Stafanus was just all about money making and had the most expensiv Prices while i was 4 weeks in Raja Ampat. So as we made a trip to a close viewpoint to Gam, snorkelling was includet. I realy have to say, that the 2 spots he showd us where verry disapointing because of really damaged reef. Everything I really liked was the wonderfull housereef. So I don’t recomend this Homestay to anyone. Food was everyday more ore less the same.

  • A group of us stayed at Kalabia for 4 days in June (we had all the sea facing cabins) and we had a brilliant time. I have to say all 6 of us were really blown away by Arborek and Kalabia.

The location is amazing, a sea grass meadow with blacktips often circling in front, mangroves at the back and you can watch the sunset and sunrises from the 180 degree views. The views were staggering! The service and food was amazing and they made delicious food for us everyday with a lot of variation and additional spice :-).

The cabins are well made, comfortable and clean – they don’t even need locks on the doors. It is so safe on Arborek!

Stefanus and his family really take very good care of their customers. If you need something or if you want to find some nice spots around, just ask and they are very happy to show you. He couldn’t’t do enough for you. He’s a really kind soul.

It was so peaceful, and we hope we can go back some time!

    Gorgeous place! Thanks.

  • Stayed at Kalabia for ten days in July. Was an amazing experience! The location is amazing… sea grass meadow with blacktip and walking sharks in the front and mangroves in the back! Can Watch the sunset and sunrises. The service is amazing and they made delicious food for me everyday with no meat as I am vegetarian! It was so peaceful, and I hope I can go back!

  • My wife and I stay 2 weeks in May in this cozy homestay. Stefanus, his wife Emi and the rest of the family really take very good care of their customers. If you need something or if you want to find some nice spots around, just ask & they are very happy to show you their life and their world. We had a very great time with them. They made us feel like their family ☺️.
The bungalows are very great situated on the water. We have seen blacktip sharks daily from our bungalow. Also the walking shark aka Kalabia we have seen. The housereef on the dropoff is amazing with beautiful corals and lots of fish ???.
I feel very blessed to have been here with this great family.
The homestay is nice situated on Arborek island. They have sunrise and sunset spot in 1 place. It is so amazing. It is like watching a painting. There is a shop close by with all basic supplies. The power sometimes goes off but it is not a problem. You will become 1 with the island and its pace ?️?️
Stefanus is a great captain. He likes to show his surroundings. He took us on a few trips & every trip was amazing. He knows where to go. He also likes to go with his guests in the water to be sure you are safe??.
The food is simple and nice. They try to do their best to put variation in it. Offcourse it is mainly fish. There are always vegetables with it ??.
I hope we can see them again another day ?.

  • Spent a week here and it was truly amazing. I’ve never felt so relaxed and comfortable. Stefanus and his family are all lovely and the food was excellent. They are able to arrange any trip you like, all for excellent prices. Piaynemo was a highlight for me and Stefanus made a great day of it taking us to all the best spots! I will certainly be back, thank you so much!

    • hi Seb, I would like to stay in Arorek 20 days, what do you suggest to bring as a basic necessity? what can’t I find on the island for mosquitoes? toilet paper? etc.
      thank you

  • I stayed at Kalabia 9 days and it was a great time. The food is pretty good and you can see the sunset and sunrise from the same spot. Blacktips showed up everyday at the huts. Stefanos was always nice and arrange every requests. Great place to stay at Arborek.

  • Stayed at Kalabia with the family. Booked 2 with Marinus through Whatsapp. Very responsive and reliable. Were the first to stay in the newly built room with the best view!! Marinus is still putting the finishing touches to it but solid and comfortable. Great foods and all round wonderful stay. Many thanks to to our lovely hosts.

  • We spent 4 days in March here. Although we had a confirmed reservation for a special hut, we were obviously not expected when we arrived. Finally Marinus managed that we were hosted by the neighbouring Sunset HS run by an extremely nice and friendly young family, unfortunately not registered at stayRA.
They have two beautiful new bungalows on the beach, a small over water restaurant and a really clean mandi hut.
Irritatingly we were asked to take our meals at Kalabia’s restaurant, although there were other guests at Sunset HS who got their meals at our restaurant.
We counted 11 guests in Marinus restaurant although he only offers 6 beds.
    Not a real problem…but?
Next time we will book Sunset HS directly.

Good snorkeling at the drop off just in front, then turning left. Regular walking sharks in the shallow seagrass area.
Best snorkeling after walking through the village, jumping in from 2nd jetty turning right – regular schools of bumpheads and sometimes afternoon mantas.
The first house of the village is a shop where you get all the essentials.

  • I stayed in Kalabia twice (5 nights in February, and 3 nights in March).

I was extremely pleased with my stay the first time, so much that I decided to return for a few more days.

Marinus and Stefanus are both stand up fellas. Extremely reliable and always willing to help.

Some things to note, that aren’t already noted:

-There are NO RATS on the property.

-There is a freezer where you can store your drinks… electricity runs from 6-6, but the freezer remains cool all day. That means a ‘cold tea’ can be had at all times.

Will definitely be back. Thanks Stefanus and Marinus!

  • My girlfriend and I stayed 15 nights at Kalabia Homestay January/February. It was definitely the best experience in RA.

Marinus and Stefanus and their wonderful spouses were extremely helpful during our stay.

The bungalows are wooden-made, spacious and benefits from a wonderful breeze because of their position. Same cannot be said for the village. On top of that, a fan was available though not necessary at all.

We went twice snorkeling with Marinus, once for Mantas and in another jetty on Mansuar and Kri. Amazing experiences as well !

The food was definitely very good. Granted the ingredients were the same : rice, noodles, vegetables, fish or chicken. But the recipes were amazing ! We also had some corn cakes from time to time that was to die for !

Definitely an excellent experience, would love to come back there !!

    Thank you for everything,
    Youness & Lucie

  • We stayed end of December as a couple in this nice homestay. It was one of our best homestays in 2 weeks Raja.
The bungalows were wooden built and had a nice terrace from where you will have a nice view and you can watch to the fishes. During our late night beer (cold beer available at the homestayy) we watched some blacktip sharks. amazing.
The food was very good and everytime enough.
Marinus was every time helpful and organized a speedboad for our transfer to Waisai without problems. Also he answered very fast by whats ap. But better use an indonesian sim card. its cheap and it works very good.
We organized by ourself some passengers from the other homestays to share the boat. It works easy. Make a walk and let others people know your depature. Its a small island and every will know this fast and will come to you ;-).

Thank you Marinus. We will come back to this lovely place!!!!! Greetings from Germany from Natalie + Andreas

  • Highly recommend this Homestay .Stayed for 4 nights mid Jan.It’s one of the newer places on Arborek so things are still quite nice .Had a over water bungalow with small sharks swimming below. Its some what difficult at low tide to enter water and get to the drop off but easy walk to jetty .The reef drop off in front of the Homestay by the orange buoy has lots of really good fish life and others had seen a manta swim by .From orange buoy to main jetty has some good coral and fish life though some definite dead zones. Between second and third jetty has really good fish and coral. If you time tides you can make it one way there and the other way back to Homestay with the right tides .Food was good ,staff were helpful also very clean .One of the better places I have stayed in my 2 trips and 7
    different homestays in Raja.Highly recommend

  • I stayed for four nights in january 2019 anf everything was very fine. Friendly family, nice cats, good food, hammocks…
I stayed in the private overwater-bungalow and could watch small sharks, a stingray and something like a baby banded sea snake (or one of the eels that look alike?!). One time during dinner a manta was jumping off the deeper water. Diveshop is 2min by feet , the jetty is 3min by feet. Great snorkeling. A shame that some tourist not able to swim but wearing livevest and gopro are brought to the jetty. they sling their whole body around the trunks of the jetty and ruin a lot. If you see pls use the report-possibility provided on stayrajaampat.com

  • This overwater bungalow is the nicest place to stay. It’s just you and the most paradisiac scenery….Unbelievable and relaxing sunsets, it’s like living in a dream 🙂
Stefanus was very welcoming and helpful and his family is just adorable!
The food was very good and tasty and different every day.
We went on a boat trip with Marinus and he was also very friendly and took us to some nice snorkeling spots.
We also dived with Gilda from Arborek dive shop and it was the most unbelievable dive ever. The diversity of fish and corals (and sharks) is so impressive.
    I highly recommend this homestay,

  • Best accommodations on Arborek Island. Three bungalows over water, ideal for catching a breeze even during the heat of the day. Comfortable and clean with some of the best food we have had at a home stay. Owners are helpful and generous. We stayed for five nights.

We stayed in standalone cabin which had a fan and mosquito netting. Wonderful views and the water is so clean and clear we could see all sorts of sea life including walking shark, reef sharks, all kinds of fishes and more. Excellent snorkeling at nearby jetty. Diving available on island as are small shops selling snacks and drinks. Good 4g cell signal (telekomsel) but no WiFi. Generator runs from about 6 pm to 6 am.

Location is ideal (facing north) so you had shade in the afternoon, cabins were relatively new, well built, and in good condition. Out over water connected by boardwalk to shore and shared “bucket” style bathroom and shower.

  • We stayed at Kalabia homestay for 2 nights and had a wonderful time. The over water bungalows are small but clean and comfortable. I would have preferred to stay at the beach bungalow as it was more spacious and has its own dining area and sun deck over the water attached. The food was great, plentiful and tasty. The sunset views are breathtaking and there was always a lovely breeze. It is a short walk to Arborek dive shop and there are shops nearby for beer and snacks. Would definitely stay there again.

  • We enjoyed kalabia, the food was the best we had at homestays and the location is lovely. Saw walking shark from the hammock. The only down side was that with all rooms full it was a little crowded on the verandah. We booked the private bungalow (which has a fan) but it wasn’t available when we arrived so we were on the shared deck where everyone eats and drinks. It was still nice though.

  • I really liked this small homestay. Only 3 rooms (one private with a fan and two attached). Only good things to tell, nice family and are really willing to help you if you ask, really nice food and there is a lot!! Great view from the rooms. You have your meals on the deck of the attached rooms where you can see sharks swimming by during or after your dinner!
They even took me out for a snorkeling trip on sunday (day of Church for them!) and was so lucky to see the manta that day!!! I wasn’t that lucky during my diving! For diving with Arborek dive shop, they are really nice and enthousiastic!! Get in contact by whatsapp to reserve your spot!

  • Our stay at Kalabia Homestay has been remarkable. The host are fast to respond to our requests. At the right level of tide and current, you can see walking sharks, black tip sharks, grey reef shark, blue ribbon sting rays, school of needle fish, school of fusiliers etc. right at your doorstep.

Amazing place to stay and i highly recommend Kalabia if you do drop by Arborek Island.

  • I cannot recommend this homestay enough. We stayed here for one week. Communication before our arrival was good and Stefanus was already waiting for us at the harbour on the day D. Both brothers are very nice. The huts are a dream, we were alone there at the time and it was a time of our lives, it really is a paradise. Simple but clean with extraordinary balcony and lot of fish just under your feet. Drinking water, coffee and tea provided. Bathroom ok. The homemade food was amazing and every lunch or dinner was a feast. We ate so many fish Stefanus caught! They also served fresh fruit with most of the meals. Lot of vegetable, which is great. We took a trip to Piaynemo and one snorkeling trip, both were great! Don’t hesitate, this is the best value!

  • Arborek is a great place and staying at Kalabia is a good choice if you are ok having water under your bed and enjoy good food while looking out for Dolphins and sharks from the dinning area. Many people come to Arborek as part of a day tour and do not stay on the Island which I think is a shame both for the tursists and the locals. The locals for sure is proud of thier Island and welcomes all people that care about nature and enviroment.

  • This place is amazing. The balcony offers you a terrific sunset and views.
We stayed at 4 different homestays and the food here was the best.
With the high tide, the snorkel is gorgeous. We saw sharks, turtles, giant clam, a big school of bump head parrot fish and a lot of colorful reef fishes.

Stefanus and his family are lovely and they provided everything for a nice stay.

We really recommend this place if you want to enjoy your stay at Raja Ampat.

  • This place is just incredible, we found the paradise! We give a 5 stars to everything!
The bungalow is on the water, you wake up with the nice songs from the birds then you stand up and see the black tip sharks swimming around your bungalow!!
The bungalow is without AC but it’s not a problem a nice breathe keep the bungalow in a nice temperature.
Stefanus and his wife are really nice. She doesn’t speak English but always smiling and cooks really really well!! We had too much for us 2: always rice,2 big plates of veggies, 1 entire fresh fish or eggs! We were full everyday after eating. They bring you the food directly on the terrasse in the bungalow which is really nice. For the sunset is also the perfect place ever you have the view of all the ocean!! We are just in love with this place and we wish we could come back once!!!

  • You think Raja Ampat is a paradise? Yeah you are right! And spending your stay with the Kalabia Homestay just makes it even more perfect!

I got to stay there twice. Of all homestays I was, the Kalabia is the best! The homestay is very new, beds are comfy and big. There is a very nice beach right next to the beach house. There is also a very nice and big terrasse that invites to relax and enjoy a breathtaking view while eating your meal. I saw jumping mantas, sharks and a whole lot of other stuff. It is also close to a diving shop.

But what makes your stay so unforgettable is the absolutely adorable homestay family. They treat you like Queens and Kings. Great attention to detail. You won’t miss a thing! Cooled water, just to name one example.

Last but not least… the food…. O my God! I can’t believe what they served us every lunch and dinner time. Great, fresh fish and a lot of sides besides rice (huge portions).
I will come back. That is for sure!!!!
Thank you very much for everything!!!

  • I stayed for in total 12 nights in this Homestay. it was stay in trip Raja Ampat for total 2 months, so i already saw many other homestays. But Kalabia Homestay is by far the very best one. the homestay food is just incredible fantastic! I got hugh fish every day and allways a lot of sidedishes (rice, vegetables, dessert, eggs).it was like in heaven. I couldnt belief how good the food was.
the owner speaks very good english and the whole family is just absolutly lovley. every evening we could see 4-8 blacktip sharks and blue stingrais just under our homestay. small ones and big ones… that was just amazing.the view from the homestay is just unbelivebal. Becouse the homestay is built on the water it’s very quit and you can have your own privacy. The standard of this homestay is very high, much higher than it was in other homestas. It feels like living in a Resort. I loved it so much to stay there and will come back soon… thank you papa jembris for everything
