Details
Marwes Homestay is located on its own small, private beach near the village of Marandan Weser. Marandan Weser is commonly called Yennyar, and it is one of the last villages in Raja Ampat in which all the homes are of traditional construction.
Marwes Homestay offers four bungalows.
There are two private bungalows on the beach and one which is over water at high tide. A fourth bungalow sits on a headland above the beach.
All bungalows sleep two on mattresses on the floor. Bedding for a third guest can be provided if needed. Bedding supplied includes includes sheets, pillows, bolsters and mosquito nets. All bungalows have covered verandahs with ocean views. Chairs and a small table are provided.
Meals are served on the bungalow verandahs, and free drinking water and tea and coffee making supplies are provided for guests.
Marwes guests share a two-room bathroom building.
Electricity at Marwes Homestay is supplied by a generator and is available from around sunset to midnight. A variable 4G signal is available.
English is spoken at Marwes Homestay.
Yennyar village is a ten minute walk away. You will need to come fully stocked with all the consumeables you consider essential, as only very basic supplies can be purchased in Yennyar’s small home kiosks.
As everywhere else in Raja Ampat, safe waste disposal and recycling is unavailable, so please take your inorganic trash away with you when you leave. Lack of effective waste disposal and recycling means that trash left in the islands will end up polluting paradise.
Coconut crabs: This protected species is unfortunately hunted and sold at some places in Raja Ampat. Please don’t buy any. Marwes Homestay will refuse to cook them for you and will insist you release them instead.
Transport / Getting there
Marwes Homestay offers both speedboat and longboat transfers.
The boat used will depend on distance, sea conditions, and the number of passengers needing transport.
Longboat transfers can accommodate up to a maximum of four passengers. The cost below is shared by passengers.
- Waisai: IDR 2,500,000
- Kri: IDR 1,700,000
- Gam: IDR 2,500,000
- Pam Islands: IDR 2,500,000
See Marwes' speedboat transfer pricelist here.

Public Boat to Batanta
If you have plenty of time, you don't mind a bit of discomfort, and you want spend as little as possible on transport costs, then there are cargo boats that you can use to get to Batanta. (Obviously, if you are going to arrive on the cargo boat, then you don't need to request a Waisai pickup when submitting the booking form above.)
Here's what you need to know about getting the cargo boat to Batanta.
Activities
You probably won't find another village like Yennyar anywhere in Raja Ampat. All of the village houses are traditionally constructed from local timber and natural materials. There are no phone or internet services and the pace of life is one which is fast disappearing from the world.
The village was founded by members of the Seventh Day Adventist faith, so their day of rest is Saturday, not Sunday as elsewhere in the islands. Note that (excepting Waisai transfers) boat trips and other activities dependent on your hosts may not be available on Saturdays. There's plenty to do though: Long walks along a fine sandy beach, birdwatching, jungle etrekking or simply relaxing in the shade and enjoying a quiet escape from online life.
Snorkelling
Be sure to bring snorkelling gear, as the reefs that extend out from Marwes Homestay are excellent. Marine life is vibrant and dolphins, mantas and dugongs can all be seen if you are lucky. Marwes Homestay can organise any snorkelling or sightseeing trip that you'd like to do.
Waterfall visits and jungle trekking
Batanta's central highlands create a lot of rain, hence the island's lush rainforest and many waterfalls. The dense forests behind Yennyar are home to huge numbers of birds, including Wilson's Bird of Paradise and Cassowaries. Marwes Homestay is a great base if you are a birder, and/or want to do some serious tropical forest trekking. Just tell your hosts your interests, or show them a picture of any particular species you'd like to see. Always go with a guide, and be sure to wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and to carry plenty of drinking water - it truly is a jungle out there!

This was our second time staying at Marwes and we have loved it again!
Erwin is an amazing host and his English has improved a lot. We did excursions every day with him and we saw a lot of Mantas, an amazing waterfall and stunning under water life. The new boat is great (faster and has a roof!) We also loved snorkeling around the house reef. If you pass the new dining area, there will be a small beach, continue after and there will be more beautiful coral.
We loved our hut with the view over the bay and we even saw a pod of dolphins in the morning.
The food is delicious and plentyful. It is served in the new dining area (apply moskito repelent before).
We hope to be able to go back for a third time.
We were at marwes for 4 nights (my second time at marwes) and it is always too short. Great food, great family, beautiful set up, comfortable houses, great trips nice house reef and at swimming distance another bigger reef. Walls to the village connecting with the family… next year 6 days?!
We really enjoyed our 4 night stay with Erwin and family at Marwes in February. We stayed in the overwater bungalow which felt private and tucked away. While there we went on snorkel trips to Urun and Wai Island and a dugong spotting and snorkeling trip at a couple of nearby reefs. We also snorkeled around the house reef and over to the back bay reef. Both were very nice and we saw mobula rays, a huge moray eel and plenty of fish life. We also walked over to the nearby traditional village and snorkeled around the other homestays along the beach there. The food was excellent and served in the new dining room on the headland. The guests are still served at individual tables rather than family style at one table so no missing out on food if one of the guests is greedy! Also, cakes for afternoon tea were provided which was a very nice touch. We enjoyed spending time in the dining room chatting with Erwin and the other guests who were all fun and interesting.
Note the description on Stay Raja Ampat is a little out of date. There are now seven bungalows. There is another new headland bungalow and two new overwater bungalows at the back of the property facing the back bay.
We happily recommend Marwes homestay!
Thanks for leaving a review Chris & Beverly 🙏
Great to hear you had a good time!
Marwes is indeed adding one new bungalow, but it’s not ready yet. It will be added to their page as soon as it is.
The other bungalows you saw belong to a new, separate homestay being built next to Marwes. That homestay will be added to Stay Raja Ampat soon too.
Batanta is incredible – thickly forested and more remote than some other islands. Marwes sits in a delightful bay, no currents to sweep you along, just like a lake. I stayed in a hut over water with magnificent views across to the forest. There is some good coral to the right next to a small beach. We made a trip to Wai island for more snorkelling. There were spotted cuscus but they were being fed bananas which is not a great idea.
I made a hike into the forest with Erwin to see Red BoPs. Be aware if you do this there are no paths. We began by boat in mangroves but this proved too difficult for me so found another way in. Then it was with machetes through dense undergrowth. I eventually spied a Red BoP but it was all quite arduous.
The homestay itself is good. Food was great. There could be some improvements to the walkways and one toilet is not quite adequate with many guests. Keep food outside to prevent furry creatures coming in.

I had a wonderful time in the family runned homestay Marwes. Erwin and his family are very helpful. Erwin speaks quite good English and is checking every day with the guests the plans for the next day. The trips I’ve made were amazing and every day we’ve got nicely cooked lunch and dinner with plenty of fresh fish. Marwes was definitely the best stay during my 3 weeks holiday in Raja Ampat!

Our family of 6 stayed at Marwes for a week. The staff were really welcoming, and willing to go above and beyond if we wanted something. Erwin and his team took us on a number of trips around Batanta. He has a genuine passion for wildlife, and will go to great lengths to make sure his customers get to experience the local environment. The food at Marwes was delicious. We loved our stay there. Thank you!

Staying at Marwes Homestay on Batanta Island was an absolute highlight of our trip. Erwin and his team are incredibly warm, attentive and genuinely care about every guest’s experience. From the very first moment we arrived, we felt well looked after and in very good hands. Nothing is ever too much trouble – they are always checking in, helping to arrange plans and making sure everyone is comfortable and happy.
One of the things that makes Marwes so special are the excursions that Erwin organizes. He put together a wonderfully varied program for us: hiking to beautiful waterfalls, snorkeling with majestic mantas, exploring colourful reef spots, and visiting remote, deserted islands that felt like little pieces of paradise. Every trip was well organized, safe and full of unforgettable moments. You can really feel that Erwin knows the area deeply and loves sharing it with his guests.
The food at Marwes Homestay is another big highlight. Every meal was delicious, fresh and very diverse – we were always excited to see what would be served next. You can taste the care and effort that goes into the cooking. The bungalows are well maintained, clean and comfortable, providing the perfect place to relax after a day full of adventures.
We can wholeheartedly recommend Marwes Homestay and Erwin’s wonderful team to anyone visiting Batanta Island. It’s a place where you feel welcome, well cared for and truly connected to the beauty of Raja Ampat.
Terima kasih banyak!

We had a fantastic time at Marwes. The bungalows are lovely, with an amazing view and reef full of corals and fish right outside. The food is delicious, including sweet treats in the afternoon – thank you Ruth! Erwin is a great host, speaks English very well and can organise any tours such as Wai island to see cuscus and bats. It’s also a 5 minute walk to the lovely Marandanweser village with houses made only in the traditional style, great birds and very friendly inquisitive children!

A wild and beautiful location. Three simple but beautiful bungalows on a private beach. Rich, healthy reef at the door, and towering rainforest out the back.
The host was very kind and the food was very good.

Erwin is responsible and responsive, the perfect host. The bungalow was over water, one of 3 and ours are closest to the rocks. This created the most soothing sound(s). Food is delivered 4 times a day. Morning is hot water for coffee/tea and cake by US vocabulary. Lunch is huge with fish, a vegetable medley and rice. Between 3 & 4 somehing outrageously delicious arrives, for example, fried bananas with chocolate sauce. Dinner is fish prepared another delicious way, caught by Erwin’s cousin William who is also very helpful around the property. I was hesitant about the shared bathroom, rest assured, it is kept phenomenally clean and with only 3 bungalows, it’s available when needed. Highly recommend taking boat trip to Gia Island to snorkel and walk in the woods for cuscus, fruit bats and coconut crabs.

Simply the best…
We were in Raja Ampat for a month and stayed in six different homestays, all of them good in their own way, but if we had to choose one as our favourite it would be Marwes.
We are well seasoned travellers and so we think that says it all. No need for details…laid back perfection, just go there!
Special mention for Erwin, 21 year old host and guide, who is so passionate and knowledgeable about the nature of Batanta island he makes every trip something special.
Thanks to all the family for giving us the best experience in the whole Raja Ampat trip!
Love and blessings.

PS: Mantas like it there too….

Marwes homestay is one of the most professionally run homestays in Raja Ampat. Every detail is well thought of and honestly we think that Marwes homestay should be the benchmark for other homestays of how to give the best experience to guests. The bungalows were spacious and nicely decorated, mattresses and bedding clean, fresh and good quality. The food was delicious and there was always plenty of it. There was always enough everything, food, snacks, fresh drinking water, hot water etc. Someone even checked multiple times per day that the toilet and dip mandi had enough water. The toilet was also cleaned several times per day which we did not see in other places. Even the bucket to clean your feet was changed daily and the homestay decks were kept clean.
They are building a new dining deck behind the bungalows above a cliff with nice views. Even with that they thought of the guests and did the noisy stuff when we were on snorkeling trips etc. On other homestays we suffered construction noise, but not in Marwes. The atmosphere was always peaceful as it should be in paradise.
The reef in front of the homestay has suffered a bit, but there are really nice reefs close by and a must do is a trip to the forest. All bungalows have nice amount of privacy and good views to the ocean. We saw mantas and dolphins from our bungalow deck. And also mudskippers at low tide!
Erwin and his team are really nice people and the village is one of the most beautiful ones in Raja Ampat.
We can warmly recommend Marwes homestay.

Very kind family, great hosts, basic bungalows with very nice surroundings. I left earlier than expected due to a skin infection that I got before arriving there and that has to be treated properly, so I didn’t enjoy all what the place and surrounding trips can offer but I hear from the other guests that it was very fine.

This is my 11th homestay in 2 trips to Raja Ampat. I didn’t expect to experience my 1st Covid illness, but feel very fortunate it was here in this beautiful, comfortable, caring place!
Erwin and his family are the epitome of hospitality. My 1st guesthouse this trip served 5 guests with 9 smallish pieces of chicken. This would never happen here!
From the mid stay changing of the sheets on the thick double mattress strategically placed in front of the door for the best ocean sunrise and breezes, to the daily refreshing the water in the sand foot bath, sweeping the floors, emptying the garbage bin and replenishing the hot and cold water thermos on your deck, the beautiful presentation of their tasty meals including an afternoon snack, the provision of a full packet of tissues on your table upon arrival, you can feel the family cares about your comfort.
I went on the village tour with Erwin twice and both sets of guests I went with had lots of laughs as well as learned about life in the beautiful traditional village nearby.
Thank you, Erwin, William, Ruth, Ofan and Leona for your thoughtfulness and even providing meds which were only available in Waisai when I felt most vulnerable with Covid. I shall always remember your kindness and hospitality.
ps. They are building a new restaurant with a spectacular view of the ocean and inlet which should be ready for your arrival!

Really great place to stay, erwin was very fun. We tried to see cassowary, but maybe the wrong season. If you are going to the cassowary spot, bring your rubber boots, i wish i knew that.

I stayed at Marwes Homestay for 3 nights and wish I had stayed longer.
Erwin and his family made me feel very welcome. It’s the perfect place to recharge your batteries in a heavenly setting, lulled by the sound of the waves, eat delicious local dishes and immerse yourself in Papuan culture in the village just 3 minutes away. There are plenty of activities on offer (waterfalls, piaynemo, snorkelling with stingrays, etc.) and Erwin will be delighted to take you along. Everyone was extremely kind and helpful to me.
Thank you for a rewarding time that I will remember for the rest of my life.

Marwes Homestay is a special experience. I stayed here for 4 nights and wanted to stay longer! Erwin, William and the family are very welcoming as are all their friends. The food is amazing, best I’ve had in Raja Ampat. Erwin knows the area well and helped me find Manta Rays and also showed me other gems. The homestay is next door to an authentic village where I spent most nights with locals playing volleyball or football. If you want a real Papuan experience this is the homestay for you! I’ll be back to this paradise.

You cannot go wrong with this place. Delicious food and treats every day. Erwin and William work tirelessly to provide you with any and all fun activities. I came looking for orchids and birds. Found rare orchids right on the property! The Manta snorkeling was superb. The waterfall adventure was very rewarding as Erwin found more orchids! It’s not fancy it’s a real adventure and one to be cherished for the rest of my life

The place is stunning and the nearby jungle comes with many cool animals and birds to observe. I enjoyed my 3 day stay very much at Marwes Homestay. The location is stunning, the bungalows are in great conditions and very comfortable, and the bathroom is super clean as well. I would recommend long sleeves and mosquitos spray for the evening. The whole family is very welcoming, super friendly and all did an amazing job to help and attend to their guests in every way. The food was super delicious!!! The village is just a 5 minute walk from the homestay and is a must see as it is one of the only traditional villages in Raja Ampat.

We lived in Marves for 7 days. Erwin is a great and friendly guide, we are very pleased with the welcome. We traveled a lot around the surrounding places. I saw almost everything I planned. Beautiful view from the houses. One wish is to improve the quality of food. And if you are planning a trip here, take repellents for sure! Little flies bite terribly! 3 of us couldn’t sleep properly, so repellents are a must!

Marwes is three (soon to be four) bungalows on a small sandy cove facing east to the sunrise – and that sunrise is exquisite. Add the soundtrack of gentle wave action, and you’re immersed in paradise. The setting is primeval – mountains and forest and clouds meeting the sea. The beach is fine powder sand with a partial scree of coral and shells that moves around with the tides. It’s also the access point for the house reef. That reef goes out 50 meters to the drop-off that tapers closer on the right side. Fish life is abundant and the coral varied and quite healthy except for a stretch to the south of the cove that got severely damaged during a storm. Current at the house reef was not an issue for us.
The bungalows are on stilts the are overwater at high tide. They are connected by an overland boardwalk and are a seven minute walk from Yennyar, the traditionally built village where your hosts live. Meals are served on each bungalows verandah – with the “catch of the day” harvested from a nearby reef just ahead of preparation. Ruth cooks and bakes with help from Ofan in a kitchen maybe 80 meters inland. Ruth has a hearty laugh and an effervescent smile. Ofan is more reserved.
Erwin is the host. He’s 20 years old and has the gift of hospitality. He’s also good at pretty much everything. He plays volleyball and football on teams in Wasai, likes to free dive, spearfish (your dinner depends on that skill) and has been working on building that fourth bungalow as well. His English is pretty good and he’s also happy to help you learn phrases in their traditional language. That said, it’s still important to download the Indonesian language package for your translate app.
Williams runs the boat. He’s 26 and very laid back – but he knows the water. He’d always have the longboat down current and quickly available when we wanted to come out.
We went travelled to four different reefs during our five day stay – from 15 to 40 minutes away – all were excellent with diverse coral and fish populations. Current is rather strong in the Dampier straight which only reinforces the value of a boat and guide. If I was limited for time, Marwes would be where I’d stay.
Giving back: If you can make room in your bags, consider bringing a new volleyball or football (soccer) for the village – or art supplies for the school.

I really liked it here! Great snorkelling, great hosts that made me feel very welcome and top notch hospitality.
The setting is serene, the bungalows, looking out over the water at Batanta’s mysterious hills, are beautifully built and clean (there is daily room service). A rectangular mosquito net, generously proportioned, kept the very few mosquitoes far away from me at night.
The food, tasty and plentiful (although a bit repetitive by day 4), was served on my verandah, where hot water, coffee and tea ingredients were also always at hand.
Erwin, the nephew of the owner, speaks quite good English.
There was quite a bit of building activity on some days (they asked beforehand if that was OK), not too noisy though. I was told that the projects at hand are about to be completed in a few days.
Snorkelling: On the other side of the small bay next to Marwes (cutting across the bay one can snorkel there in 25 mins) large coral heads signal the beginning of a couple of km of a gorgeous coral landscape (the loveliest I have seen in Rajah Ampat) along the coast, with large and small coral heads separated by narrow crevices. Fish aplenty, including schools at the edge of the drop and on occasion some big ones. I saw a very impressive group of 70 cm Napoleon wrasses, good sized sharks, the occasional turtle, and even a manta, cruising into the bay. Also many gorgeous giant clam lips on display
The bay itself also has nice corals in front of mangroves, the corals interdispersed with sea grass, starting at the small beach some 200 m from Marwes. The water has a green-brownish tint from the mangroves, creating a primordial atmosphere. The brightly iridescent blue lips of many baby giant clams stand out beautifully among the muted colours. Lifting the head above the water I could hear and sometimes see the jungle birds. Much to explore and with no currents to worry about.
The shelf in front of the homestay is apparently too exposed to support much coral growth, but continuing from there in the direction of the village, I came across quite a few nice areas of reef in front of the village (and beyond) with plenty of fish action. If the currents are too strong one can also get in (or out of) the water at the village, also well worth a visit in any event.
A trip to the mantas at Dayang Island was also very worthwhile.

We stayed at Marwes for 5 nights. It is a great location. Beautiful views from our private balcony. The food (vegetarian is also possible) is great and served at you bungalow. Erwin and his family are very nice and take you to the most beautiful places around. Wai island, blue lagoon and manta snorkeling!!! There are also really nice snorkeling places around the homestay, wai island and near the Manta snorkel spot. The bungalows are nice and the toilet building is clean.

Highly recommended homestay!
We stayed 4 nights, Erwin and his family are great hosts.
Really nice bungalow, great sunrise.
Food is amazing, best we had in RA homestays. Nice village nearby.
Snorkeling is really nice, although there are better reefs in RA. Still, we saw a lot of fish, rays, sharks and sometimes dolphins at sunrise. Dugongs are around as well, but we didn’t see one.
We did the manta tour, Wai island for snorkeling and the waterfall tour. All were amazing.
Erwin is a great guide, who wants everyone to have a good time.
Kind and easy communication in English.
Would definitely recommend staying at this place.

We had a fantastic time at Marwes!
Erwin, our guide, swam with us during snorkelling trips, and pointed out weird and wonderful creatures we wouldn’t otherwise have seen. John, the boat’s pilot and mechanical engineer, was always nearby to ensure our safety.
The huts are lovely, and are built in the same traditional style as many of the houses in the village of Yennyar nearby, by the same master builder! We loved all the thoughtful details that went into building the one in which we stayed.
Ladies from the village cooked scrumptious meals, with sustainably caught fish — and fed us so much cake!
We felt so well taken care of. Thank you so much Erwin, family and friends for an amazing stay.

I loved everything about this homestay. The food is prepared fresh and they serve something different every time. At other homestays you get served cold food in shaving dishes, but here they bring it to you hot from the kitchen to your bungalow. Just amazing. Erwin is a good guide and will ask you about any tour wishes for every day you are there. Bring your own fins/snorkel/mask since they do not have any spare equipment. The beach is very secluded and you are truly alone there. The village is 5 minutes by foot and you can play soccer or volleybal with the kids there in the afternoon/evening. I absoluteLy loved every second I was there.

We stayed in Marwes Homestay for 3 nights, March 2023. The bungalow was very pretty with a lovely veranda above the waves of the small bay. The bathroom was adjacent to the bungalow and very clean although with signs of wear, but will be renovated. The delicious food was served on our terrace and attentive cleared away when finished. The snorkeling at the house reef was nice, although when we were there the visibility was not so good probably due to the rain. From the bay you can go around the corner to the first and second jetty in the village, which is a pretty and rather long snorkel-trip. The reef here is actually quite nice, although the dropoff is rather barren. We saw a group of bumphead parrot fish, a shark, a turtle and dolphins in the distance. Erwin also discovered a wobbegong shark in hiding 🙂 in front of the bungalow.
We went for a hiking trip with Erwin and John, which included a boat ride partly through the mangrove and coffee/thee and fresh coconut picked from the tree afterwards. The hike was very interesting, alas the cassowary’s didn’t show up. From Marwes Homestay you have a lot of possibilities, but because of some ear problems we had to take some time out. The village is very friendly and beautiful and in walking distance of the homestay. In the village you can also walk along the beach. The internet mast in the middle of the traditional village looks a bit strange, but provides perfect connection. The family is very friendly and Erwin’s mother is a wonderful cook. Erwin speaks good English and is a very enthousiastic guide and host.

We stayed at Marwes homestay 3 nights at the beginning of April. This was our best stay (out of 8) during our Raja Ampat trip!
We felt super welcoming and were greeted with big smiles every day. The bungalows and veranda are spacious and clean, with good matresses on the floor. The bungalow was cleaned every day, while we were in the water or on a trip.
Toilet facilities (for both bungalows) are attached to the on land bungalow.
Food (vegetarian) was amazing (best we had) and served on each veranda. You also have your own can of hot water, coffee/tea supplies and fruit platter! In between meals, they even serve snacks! So you definitely won’t starve here!
Our host, Erwin, is the best. He makes sure you will have a wonderful stay. Every evening after dinner, he visited us to discuss what we were planning to do the next day, or just talk about the day. He is a nice companion 🙂
Erwin and John took us to the river for birding, the mantas, Dayan and Urun Island for snorkeling and Wai Island for the colony of flying foxes! Erwin attented us in the water (very good freediver!) showing us the underwater wonders. We enjoyed it a lot!
Erwin took us also on a short walk to the traditional village of Marandan Weser. Definitely worth a visit! The locals are friendly and the houses beautiful.
As mentioned by other guests, the family is building two more bungalows. However, we loved to have the homestay to ourselves during our stay 😉
The description on the website is not up to date anymore:
– Erwin learned himself English, so communication is not a problem at all in case you don’t speak Bahasa Indonesian.
– There is phone signal and 4G connection at the homestay. However, not super reliable. But contact with the outside world is possible!
– Furthermore, be sure to bring mosquito repellent.

My husband and I had a wonderful 3 night stay at Marwes. Erwin and his family were wonderful hosts. The food was plentiful, varied, and delicious. The bungalow was simple and met our needs, including a beautiful view. The house reef was great too. The location was ideal – between Dayan mantas and the waterfalls. It’s walking distance to the village also. We highly recommend the manta and waterfall boat trips. Our favorite was snorkeling Urun Island though, the reef was amazing and we got super lucky and had a dugong swim right past us! A giant ocean manta surfaced next to the boat on on trip back too – quite a day! The family is building a couple more bungalows, so will have room for more guests, but we really enjoyed having the place to ourselves during our stay. Thanks so much Erwin and family!

Marwes Homestay is a beautyful place in paradise. It has a good housereef, we saw bumphead parrot fish, wobbegong and many other fishes. Sometimes Dolphins visited the bay.
Erwin is a great host and guide, we did many good snorkelling trips with him and his english is very good. he showed us his house in the maradan weser village, which can be reached via a small path and the beach within a few minutes. It‘s a beautyful traditional village.
The food is the best we ever had in Raja Ampat, very varied and delicious.
we definitely want to come back!
Terima kasih banyak kepada Erwin dan keluarganya!

One of my favorite Homestays while staying in Raja Ampat! The bungalow is spacious and very clean with a breathtaking view! Erwin and his family are so kind and helpful, he showed me around the beautiful traditional village and took me to a few different spots around the Homestay to explore the reefs and in search for dugongs(didn’t see any but it is possible in the area) . The reef is quite good in front and around the Homestay With lots of colorful fish and coral. The trip to manta point was so awesome, saw 2 huge mantas and the stunning secret garden with so many colorful soft corals, and tea and snacks for after:)The beach where the bungalows are is a wonderful private beach on the side of the island. The food here was my favorite of all the Homestays in Raja Ampat, delivered right to your bungalow! The fresh snacks each day were my favorite 🙂 Erwin even let me connect to his Wi-Fi each night, because I had no service in the area. The peaceful vibes are great at his Homestay, a must stay if you are heading to Batanta Most defiantly will be returning here again!
Thank you so much robin

Marwes Homestay is a wonderful location for a few nights in Batanta! We pre-booked only two nights and were a little sad that we weren´t able to stay a night or so longer. We really enjoyed the magnificent view from the balcony, drinking coffee and watching the sunrise in the morning. The location of the homestay is exceptionally beautiful! The bungalow is spacious and clean, the private bathroom is directly next to the sleeping room – quite luxurious.
Food at Marwes was among the best we had in Raja Ampat during our 3-weeks-trip! It was well seasoned, a bit spicy as we like it, and we even enjoyed freshly cooked squid.
Marandan Weser, a very picturesque town, is just around the corner. Erwin not only showed us around his village, but also took us on very nice snorkeling trips (together with John). We had a great time, thanks Erwin and John!
Thank you so much Tobias &Lisa

we have visited many homestays during our trips in 2022 and 2018 and Marie’s is one of our favourite ones.
1,) Erwin and his family are so nice and are trying to do the best that the guest feel at home. Everyone is friendly and attentive, so to stay at Marves is a joy.
2.) Batanta is a great place for snorkelling maybe the best in R4 and Erwin loves to snorkel and even to freedive. He knows the reefs around Batanta and the animals down there and he is happy to show you the best places of his island. Just take a look at his Facebook account or Instagram and you see that he is really an enthusiastic snorkeler! You can be sure to have a great guide. But I should not forget John who is driving the boat. Both are a great team!
The house reef is quite good and worth to investigate it. I have seen bump head patriot fish, sharks, a turtle, bat fish and more.
3.) the food was the best we got in R4! To be honest the variation was not to big, but how the food was prepared differs from the other places. The food is just two steps ahead of the food was offered at other islands to us. The fish was outstanding and not cooked to death and the veggies were really delicious.
4.) The bungalow is spacious and the location is pretty. It is a 8 minutes walk to a beautiful village with friendly locals. Everybody is friendly, the village is clean and well organized and nowbody is hanging around and chewing betel. It is the prettiest village we have seen in R4!
Many thanks to Erwin and his family who have made possible a beautiful week to us.

Many thanks to Erwin and his family who have made possible a beautiful week to us.
We had a very nice stay here, mainly due to the kindness of Erwin and his younger brothers. We give them 5+ stars!
Erwin is such a friendly, open and just sweet personality! Absolutely adorable. Best guide in R4.
He took us on a nice Manta trip to Dayang which was fun! Saw 2 manta’s and snorkelled around the coral. Erwin also showed us around in the village and educated us about the tradition. Very impressive. Loved it!
The location of Marwes is great. Lovely beach, nice snorkelling. Many dolphins in the bay in front of the homestay.
Some feedback for improvement:
We booked 3 nights through the website and at arrival we told Marwes 1 of us was vegetarian. We asked if they had tempeh, tahu and that sort of stuff. Like they had at other homestays in R4. But the food they kept serving was fish and 1 sort of veg. So I just skipt several meals. Maybe they can adjust that in the future.
We wanted to see birds of paradise but it wasn’t possible; they told us the path was not suited and too steep. We took the bird tour on the river, but didn’t see any birds. Not worth it.

Absolute paradise! My wife and I enjoyed 6 lovely nights here. Amazing food, amazing people and an amazing place with such good energy! Very clean and very well maintained. An excellent place to experience real village life. Note that it’s disconnected and very simple. No internet and very remote. We would like to thank all those involved with making sure we had a fabulous time. Ruth, Stanley, William, Erwin, Gesbo, James, Hesti, Alsa, John you all are the BEST! We will see you next year..Good luck and big love from… David and Preachie

Very nice homestay in Batanta with a private beach and wonderfull snorkelling.
We spent 3 days there and we found a very friendly family that shows us the highlights of Batanta: we saw mantas, waterfalls, remoted islands, beaches, a traditional village… The hospitallity was exeptional, the food delicious and different every day.
Thank you William, Edwin and all the family to make our days in Batanta unforgettable!

We spent 3 days there and we found a very friendly family that shows us the highlights of Batanta: we saw mantas, waterfalls, remoted islands, beaches, a traditional village… The hospitallity was exeptional, the food delicious and different every day.

We had a wonderful four night stay at Marwes Homestay. The location is exceptional – a secluded bay at your doorstep with stunning views across to the forested hills of Batanta. The hospitality of the hosts was superb and each meal was a delight – fresh fish, vegetables, rice, fruit and even the occasional locally made cake! They made a real effort to make sure we had everything we needed and enjoyed our stay.
Good snorkelling is possible just metres away from the homestay, and a few hundred metres away there are fine coral gardens teeming with fish and other sea creatures – the best snorkelling I have ever experienced. Apart from the myriads of smaller fish, we saw Green Turtles and large parrotfish (not sure which species). Dolphins were regularly seen cruising the bay. Pulau Dayan is a 30 minute boat ride away and while I wouldn’t say the coral is any better there, it is a more reliable spot to see manta rays and larger fish such as sharks.
Marwes homestay is a short walk from the traditional village of Marandan Weser, well worth a visit to meet the friendly locals and see the traditional houses and culture. There are two other homestays in the village, Rissen Homestay is on the beach in front of the village and Sun Homestay is set a little further back from the beach in the village itself.
In terms of birdwatching near Marwes and Marandan Weser, access to the forest is limited, mainly due to the lack of trails and rugged limestone hills which rise steeply behind much of the coast of Batanta. Stanley took us to see an active Red Bird-of-Paradise lek which was great, however the trail was nearly non-existent and the one hour walk was very steep and at times slippery over a limestone ridge so I would only recommend it for the fit and adventurous! Currently (2019), the locals we spoke with didn’t know of any Wilson’s Bird of Paradise leks in the area.
There is a small mangrove forest behind the homestay which held a few good bird species including Blue-black Kingfisher & Black Thicket Fantail. The bay to the south of Marwes has a small area of forest and mangroves which were also ok for birding. There is also a bit of accessible forest on the coast to the north-west of Marandan Weser. We also did a trip along the Warador River which was about a 30 minute boat ride away – this spot looked like it had potential for birding as there was a small trail and a bit of bird activity around. Sadly, we had to cut the trip short and retreat back to the homestay due to heavy rain setting in.
Following Marwes, we spent a couple of nights in a homestay near Saporkren, Waigeo and the location and homestays in this area don’t even compare – Marwes was much better in every way. A big thanks to Stanley, Herman and Jarrot for their hospitality and making our trip so enjoyable!
