Details

Manggara Homestay lies on the northwest shore of West Waigeo’s tiny Meos Manggara island.

Four bungalows are available.

Two private bungalows occupy a beachside setting at the edge of Meos Manggara village.

The bungalow verandahs have table and chair settings from which to enjoy unimpeded ocean and sunset views.

Bungalow bedrooms are set up for two, but extra beds can be provided if needed. Beds are mattresses on the floor, and sheets, pillows, bolsters and mosquito nets are supplied.

Two over-water bungalows are also available. The over-water bungalows have  raised beds. Note that the bungalows are not over water at low tide.

Meals at Manggara Homestay are served in a sand-floored, beachside dining room.  Drinking water, tea and coffee making supplies are always freely available.

Guests share a 2 room bathroom building. A western style toilet and dip mandi (bucket) bathing are provided in one room, with a squat toilet and bucket bathing in the other.

Electricity is provided by generator and is available from sunset to about midnight. A reasonably strong but variable mobile phone signal is received at Manggara Homestay, but it wouldn’t support a data connection when we last visited.

Manggara Homestay is in Meos Manggara village, so basic supplies are readily available from village kiosks. (Anything that you absolutely can’t live without would be best brought with you.)

English is spoken at Manggara Homestay.

To avoid contributing to the trashing of paradise, all homestays ask that you please take all your inorganic (especially plastic) waste away with you when you leave.

Transport / Getting there

Transport between Manggara Homestay and Waisai is by longboat capable of carrying up to three passengers. The one way trip price is IDR 3,000,000. The cost is shared by passengers.

Transfers between Manggara Homestay and Kri/Gam cost IDR 2,000,000. Transfers to/from Piaynemo are IDR 1,700,000.

Reaching West Waigeo is not cheap, but the remote region's unique attractions and wild nature justify the expense. You'll also see a lot of Raja Ampat on the way, including Kabui Bay and the famed Kabui Passage.

Activities

There is excellent snorkelling at Meos Manggara. Large schools of fish congregate under the village jetty and reefs along the dropoff are healthy.

Meos Manggara's shoreline is one long beach perfect for walking, and the small village is both pretty and welcoming.

Be sure to take advantage of Manggara Homestay's snorkelling and sightseeing trips to explore the nearby islands and the rarely-visited sights of West Waigeo. Anything you want to do (including visiting the not-too-distant Wayag Islands) can be arranged.

Because of the region’s remoteness, West Waigeo’s reefs are pristine, rich and untrammelled by day tripping boats from Sorong and Waisai. Fabulous snorkelling is available in the area and it’s most likely that you will be the only people in the water. Mantas congregate at Pulau Yefnabi (and several other less well known locations) in the Meos Manggara islands. They can even be found there between June and September, when they are usually absent from the better known Dampier Strait sites of Manta Point and Manta Sandy.

Apart from the excellent snorkelling and mantas, the Meos Manggara cays offer sights like West Waigeo’s “Pasir Timbul” – a stretch of pristine white sand that emerges from the ocean with every low tide. A visit to Aljui Bay is highly recommended, and provides the opportunity to see ancient rock art galleries, a large commercial pearl farm, secret lagoons, cultural sites and spectacular scenery.

A selection of popular trips can be found below. All prices are per trip. 4 passengers maximum. Any applicable entry fees are included in the price.

  • Beautiful place with very nice people, We loved our snorkeltrips with Elly, the father.
Food in the cute restaurant was very good. We had the best eggplant/coconut curry with barbecued fish of our trip.

  • Really lovely place to stay. The bungalows are amazing with stunning views of sunrise and sunset. Good snorkelling all around the island and great jetty with lots of macro. Nice village, pretty stroll around the coconut groves. The family are quiet but really friendly. Really good, varied abundant food. Snorkel trips are good value and stunning. A perfect option if you want peace and quiet far from any tourists but with the chance to meet the locals, play with the kids etc if you walk to the village

  • A proper family homestay on the tip of a beautiful, remote island.
The only homestay, so you can be the only tourists on the island, like we were for a week.
Sunrise and sunset from your stunning over-water cabin. High-tide and low-tide shows guaranteed.
Mosquito net, no fan, shared bathroom with bucket shower on land. Power from sunset for a few hours.
Delicious food cooked by the family and served in a cute dining room on the beach.
5 minute walk to the village through the coconut groves or along the beach at low tide. Cold drinks (no beer) available at the kiosk at the far end, near the pier.
Friendly, laid-back locals who will make every visit to the village a special one.
Homestay family so lovely, giving a perfect, discreet service. The little ones are such free spirits, they are a delight.
Head of the family and captain of the boat will take you to the best snorkelling spots, with help from his brother who speaks enough English to arrange trips.
Be ready for 6am and they will take you to where the mantas are! Large pods of dolphins also around.
We absolutely loved the cabin, our favourite experience in Raja Ampat.
    Recommended for “being alone” seekers.

PS: litter is an issue on the island unfortunately…

  • This was my first homestay in raja ampat and by far the best. The bungalow was really spacious and clean
The food was delicious and plentiful
And Anis and her family are really kind and welcoming, and Appa took me to the most beautiful reefs I have seen
I’m a solo traveller and not once did I feel uncomfortable
    Thank you anis’family

  • I booked Manggara homestay for 4 nights and was very pleased with everything. The outstanding beautiful environment, the lovely family, the food – all was great. Ellis the host took me to a number of reefs for snorkeling and it was truly amazing. This place is a little pearl in this remote region and I can truly recommend to spend some days here or even longer if you enjoy peace and nature. I extended with a day and when hopefully coming back to Raja Ampat some day I will definitely book a period here to further explore the reefs around these islands and enjoy the hospitality of Manggara homestay.

  • Mangarra Homestay is located on the Island Meos Mangarra which is a small island in West Waigeo. If you are looking to go somewhere beautiful, more remote but also less luxurious than Kri or Gam and are willing to take on the 3h boat ride from Waisai, this homestay is perfect. It’s the only homestay on the island and you only share the beautiful beach with the kids from the village who are very friendly and curious. The diversity of wildlife is fascinating but be careful especially in the evening as there are sea kraits, cone snails, eels, and sharks just off the shore. The homestay itself is rather basic as there are no fans and no real showers but the beds are covered with mosquito nets (which are absolutely necessary) and the food is yummy.

  • I enjoyed my recent three day stay there. The family doesn’t speak English, but a dive guide was there for the first two days and took myself and Roxane on some very nice snorkel and manta tours. There wasn’t a good snorkel area in front of the guest house… you needed to take a boat. There were wonderful shells on the beach.
The most remarkable part was the gourmet food. Definitely, the best food I had on my trip. Delicious sauces on the fish, chicken coconut curry, hot beignets in the morning, fruit every meal, a choice of mocha coffee mix. Book a few nights there as a break from the mediocre offerings elsewhere!
The family were friendly and accommodating. The tours were very reasonably priced. Enjoy this ‘off the beaten track’ treasure!

  • The place is incredibly beautiful, isolated on a small island. Everyone was friendly, food was really good. Amazing sunset.
The bungalows are nice, comfortable, spacious, with mosquito nets.
It’s 15 minutes boat away from a manta spot. Went there 2 times and got lucky in the morning (go there early).

  • We loved our stay, it’s a very beautiful place, well kept with good food and lovely hosts
They can organize trips to other places and it was quite easy and convenient to plan it as we could communicate via WhatsApp.
    We would definitely recommend it.

  • Beautiful and quiet location, lovely family and super delicious food! I really enjoyed my four nights stay at Manggara Homestay. Homestay offers very cheap snorkeling tours to the nearby Islands.
