Details

Jou Suba Homestay is located on a fine beach on the uninhabited island of Yef Kabu in remote West Waigeo.

Five large bungalows sit just above the high tide line on Yef Kabu’s eastern shore. Bungalow verandahs are large, have great ocean views and are equipped with table and chairs.

Four of the five bungalows sleep two people on raised beds. (In June 2025, the fifth bungalow still has a mattress on the floor.) Sheets, pillows, bolsters and mosquito nets are supplied in all bungalows. An extra mattress for a third guest can be provided if required.

Guests share a 3 room bathroom building. A western style toilet, a squat toilet and dip mandi (bucket) bathing are provided.

Meals at Jou Suba Homestay are served on the bungalow verandahs and drinking water, tea and coffee making supplies are also supplied there.

Rustic stool and table settings sheltered by beach umbrellas provide several places to relax on the beach.

Electricity is provided by generator and is available from sunset to about midnight. A reasonably strong but variable mobile phone signal is received at Jou Suba Homestay.

Starlink internet: Jou Suba offers free use of their Starlink internet service to guests.

You’ll need to bring any snacks and supplies you absolutely can’t live without, as the nearest village (Mutus) is about a 10 minute boat ride away and only very basic supplies can be purchased there.

English is spoken at Jou Suba Homestay.

To avoid contributing to the trashing of paradise, all homestays ask that you please take all your inorganic (especially plastic) waste away with you when you leave.

Transport / Getting there

Transfers between Waisai and Jou Suba Homestay cost IDR 2,500,000 each way for 1-2 passengers, IDR 3,500,000 for 3-4 passengers and IDR 4,500,000 for 5-6 passengers. Cost is shared by passengers.

See Jou Suba's August 2025 pricelist (59KB)  for transfer prices to other locations.

Total trip cost is shared by passengers.

Reaching West Waigeo is not cheap, but the remote region's unique attractions and wild nature justify the expense. You'll also see a lot of Raja Ampat on the way, including Kabui Bay and the famed Kabui Passage.

Activities

Jou Suba Homestay can organise any snorkelling and sightseeing trips you want, and is a good base from which to explore the nearby islands and villages, as well as the rarely-visited sights of West Waigeo.

Because of the region’s remoteness, West Waigeo’s reefs are pristine, rich and untrammelled by day tripping boats from Sorong and Waisai. Fabulous snorkelling is available in the area and it’s most likely that you will be the only people in the water.

Mantas congregate at Pulau Yefnabi and several other locations around the islands. They can even be found there between June and September, when they are usually absent from the better known Dampier Strait sites of Manta Point and Manta Sandy.

Apart from the excellent snorkelling and mantas mentioned above, the West Waigeo Islands offer sights like the local “Pasir Timbul” – a stretch of pristine white sand that emerges from the ocean with every low tide.

A visit to Aljui Bay is highly recommended, and provides the opportunity to see ancient rock art galleries, a large commercial pearl farm, secret lagoons, cultural sites and spectacular scenery.

  • Had a great 6 days at Jou Suba homestay. We were delayed in Waisai due to weather, but Ferdinand was great at staying in touch and making sure we had everything we needed throughout our stay. I can’t speak to the quality of the Jou Suba bungalows as we were put in a bungalow down the beach (all their bungalows were booked :() but Jou Suba provided all our meals which were always delicious and plentiful and our excursions, our favourites were Tamaku and Yefnabi. The house reef has good coral and lots of fish. From the jetty you can go right heading to CoCo Huts but at low tide it can be difficult to access the beach. If you go left there is a second great reef heading towards the other side of the island, we found it is really good at the start and at the end. As with all reefs these days expect to see patches of dead coral. We also walked around the island (1hr) which was fun. The location, food, and reefs were great!

  • We had a fantastic stay here. The remoteness is just one of the many aspects we enjoyed. They were very considerate of us having 5 year old with us and made sure our son always had something nice to eat. The bungalows sits right on the waters edge making a relaxing setting to enjoy the view of the other islands. The fringing house reef is fantastic and there is another high quality reef just around to the north. There is a walking trail to the other side of the island for sunset. The boat trip from Waisai through the barrows is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Ferdinand was a great host and organised an amazing trip to Wayag. It is also close to a Manta feeding station. Overall very impressed, but particularly encouraged by Ferdinanads constant work to upgrade and improve the facilities. A beautiful, well managed location. Highly recommend. We will be back.

  • Unfortunately we couldn’t go to Wayag but the good thing is that we have to come back and that we could spend more time in our great bungalow. Ferdinan transferred us to a new, very beautiful beach bungalow from the same family because he had a big group staying and wanted to give us more privacy which turned out great. We were lucky that Ferdinan was on the island so we had a lot of interesting talks and information. The trips were great. Next time we will visit we will have diner in the new overwater restaurant currently under construction.

    • Hi Bald and Tania
Thank You and see You next time
our new overwater bungalow waiting for You;)

  • I stayed three night and left NY eve. Overall very positive.

Lovely welcome and clean room. Bed especially comfortable!

Food was great – and lots of it. Fresh fish with an optional spicy sauce was my idea of heaven.

Felt well looked after and safe as solo female traveller.

Great morning trip to neighboring islands for snorkeling and very good transfer service to Banata.

    Would recommend staying here.

  • For us Jou Suba was a very good place for meeting fellow travelers, getting to know them, and planning day trips together. It has a nice home reef with a good variety of fish, coral and even blacktip sharks. However, the day before we left there was a yellowish-green underwater cloud covering some parts of the reef. We never found out if that was a natural phenomenon or not. Good excursions at reasonable prices can be arranged to other very nice reefs in the area. The area appears to have a good population of the terrestrial coconut crabs.

The food was generally good, sometimes not large quantities for the number of guests and two vegetarians had limited options at some meals. Most days we had a freshly made afternoon snack which was very nice, e.g. donuts or steamed sweets. The bathroom and shower facilities are somewhat limited for the number of guests, with two of the four rooms under construction.
Staff was friendly and helpful but because of pressing family matters, Ferdinan was not on the island for most of the time we were there so we missed out on his expertise. Guests were in touch with him via Whatsapp to arrange tours. (Luckily, a staffer from another homestay on the island who could speak good English was around some of the time.) We appreciate Ferdinan’s efforts to protect the area from potentially very polluting mining.

La barriera corallina davanti all’homestay è stupenda.
Peccato, forse avevamo aspettative troppo alte.

  • I stayed at Jou Suba from 1 till 5 December. The family is very friendly and hospitable. Although Ferdinand was not there most of the time, we could communicate good enough to get a better ‘klamboe’ and a hammock on my veranda.
    They keep everything clean too.

The amount and quality of the food were good and the breakfast was the best I got during my stay at 6 homestays.

The house reef is good. You have to swim about 200 meters to the left for the coral and fish. Among others I saw shark, turtle and ray.

It was a pleasure to stay in this homestay.

  • Ferdinan, the owner, is just a legend, the guy is so nice and friendly, very funny as well. He’s also extremely helpful when it comes to planning trips etc, so you will feel very connected to the owner here and the communication is so easy. House reef is great here, and there is also a village really close by, as well as many other attractions such as a Manta Point where you’ll likely see multiple Manta Rays in your trip there. All the staff are nice and friendly – overall, would definitely recommend a stay here.

  • Review of Jou suba:

We had a wonderful stay at Jou Suba on a small remote island in Raja Ampat. The place is a true paradise and still remote enough to not be taken over by tourism.

Ferdinan is the host with great English. He is ambitious with plans to grow the homestay with better facilities, like a new restaurant and hopefully a dive centre in future.

His wife Grace makes delicious Indonesian food in generous quantities for three meals a day, plus an afternoon snack. The food quality was excellent and the best we had in RA so far on our trip.

We are hugely grateful to Ferdinan and the entire team at Jou Suba and at Waisilip for their responsiveness and care after an incident with a stingray during our stay. We felt in very safe hands.

The snorkelling on the house reef was wonderful and we saw large schools of fish and diverse corals during our stay, plus jumping fish, many animals and a shark straight from the balcony.

We loved our visit to Ajuli Bay with a wall reef quite different and unique to other reefs in RA, and loads of nudibranches, sponges and corals we hadn’t seen before during our three weeks in RA. This was a highlight.

We were very grateful to Elly and his brother for their skill, enthusiasm and kindness on our excursions to locate serene manta and many small animals during our snorkelling trips, and saving a shark and moray eel from a trap.

Prices for the excursions are quite high compared to other homestays, so factor this in to your budgeting.

The room was spacious and the bed was very comfortable, and we enjoyed spending time on the large balcony straight onto a fantastic view of the water and the sunrise. Free and near-constant WiFi was very convenient to help us plan the next stages of our trip and keep in touch with family.

Injo nabor to everyone at Jou Suba! We will remember our stay fondly!

  • We spent 3 fantastic days at Jou Suba homestay. The island is quite small, very well positioned to exlore the surroundings (West Papua and Waisai), with a very nice house reefs, whale passing just few meters from the beach (!) and good snorkeling.
Accomodation is good, located just in front of the beach, relaxing and with beautiful view and food is really excellent ! Good wifi connection w/Starlink connection in the night.
Pak Ferdinand is a good and experienced host and can help in everything, from boat pick-ups, to trip suggestions and plannnig, to local problem solving.
We appreciated a lot his efforts to keep the island and the beach clean from (a lot of) plastic rubbish coming with high tides from the ocean, a real trouble in Raja Ampat !
We made unforgettable boat trip to Waisai (top); only had some troubles on the way back (lasting almost 4 hours) due to the fact that one of the two 15HP engines of the longboat couldn’t work appropriately and therefore the cruise was very slow.
I really reccomend Jou Suba for your staying and wish all the best to Ferdinand for keeping this island in good standing and continue his effort in facility and boats improvement.

    • Thank You Massimo for your really great review and your suggestion with our pleasure to welcome your suggestion to improve our anggine 🙏

Ferdinand risponde subito via WhatsApp e e’ organizzato. Tutta la famiglia è accogliente e gentile

  • Jou Suba Homestay was the highlight of my trip to Raja Ampat. Ferdinan goes out of his way every day to make sure guests have the best experience—organizing diving trips, offering advice on where to stay, and accommodating special requests with genuine hospitality. The newly renovated cabins are as nice as any homestay I’ve stayed in, making it a comfortable and relaxing place to unwind.

The staff also add to the charm of this place. Marcel is always helpful and a joy to talk to, bringing humor to every conversation. Grace prepares delicious snacks and meals that make each day even better. Practically, the fast speeds of Starlink helped a lot with planning. And of course, the view—stunning white sand beaches on a small, private island—truly feels like paradise.

For me, this was the best homestay in Raja Ampat. Huge thanks to Ferdinan and the entire team for making my stay unforgettable!

  • We traveled to Raja Ampat for the first time and we couldn’t have wished for a better homestay than Jou Suba. The Staff has been amazing and they try to fulfill every wish you have. They even did a bonfire to celebrate our arrival and sang songs – it was a fantastic experience.

Also special thanks to Ferdinand – the owner – he was so helpful and welcoming. He helped us in coordinating our stay and all the trips we did. If you are there, we can recommend Manta Point and Wayag very much. Although Wayag is further away, it’s so worth it. And if you can split boat costs with other guests – even better.

THANK YOU for making this stay unforgettable!!!

  • We spent five unforgettable nights at Jou Suba—my second visit to the breathtaking Raja Ampat. Nestled on a remote island surrounded by some of the world’s healthiest coral reefs, this homestay truly captures the essence of the original Raja Ampat experience.

If you’re searching for a warm and welcoming, family-run retreat far from the more crowded areas around Kri, Jou Suba is the perfect choice. One of the absolute highlights of our stay was witnessing whales passing just 200 meters from the shore almost daily. Be sure to bring your drone for a chance to admire these magnificent creatures even closer!

  • Massive thanks to Ferdinan & his family for making our first trip to raja Ampat an unforgettable one. This home stay was by far the best we stayed in and everything was just perfect. Can only recommend to stay here if you come to raja Ampat. Communication with Ferdinan is excellent, easy and fast.

Fresh, local food every day including freshly baked snacks from Ferdinans wife. My fiancee is vegetarian, but this was no problem at all and every meal left us happy & stuffed! We even helped cooking one night and could see with how much care she prepares the dishes.

The rooms are super clean with a cozy terrace to watch whales, dolphins and mantas swim by. We had a super comfortable bed and a fan which let us sleep like babies. The sunrise every morning was incredible and you can watch it from your bed but I preferred walking the 5 steps over the soft sand to the water and watch it from there in all its glory. We saw whales five out of the six days we stayed and the one day we did not see any whales, a huge oceanic manta was feeding for an hour in front of the home stay within swimming distance. The ocean is turquoise and crystal clear with two amazing house reefs where you can watch beautiful fish and even a blue ringed ray if you are lucky.

There is a bunch of trips you can do from Jou Suba, but the most important one is Wayag. Ferdinan will help you find the best day for the trip with smooth sea as it is a long ride to make sure you will have a fantastic trip. It was an amazing experience to see the beauty of wayag and then go snorkle with some reef sharks over lunch and some more snorkeling in wayags reefs in the afternoon. Clearly the highlight of our stay but honestly every trip was worth it – hidden bay, mangroves, manta point and the sand bank all were great trips and we would not want to miss any of it.

The last night we had a massive camp fire under the stars including some nice dancing and singing which was just a great vibe all around and the perfect goodbye.

We stayed in a different Homestay after but when we arrived back in Wasai for the ferry to sorong, we saw the Jou Suba crew picking up some new guests. When they saw us everyone was smiling ear to ear and they immediately helped us with our luggage and getting off the boat – this just shows how genuine and attentive everyone in Jou Suba is.

Thanks again & we definitely will try to come back soon.

  • Anything I say about Jousuba would be less, for one needs to go there, stay at the island, spend time with the adorable family who hosts, soak into the stunning nature, and only then they may understand the true beauty of this place.

This homestay is located on a tiny island away from the hustle, nearly 2 hours boat ride from the main town Waisai, surrounded by pristine blue beaches. When we reached it was dark, and my heart shook a bit to see the isolated island in the middle of nowhere, yet the warmth of Ferdi and his gentle staff assured me the safety I was hoping for. The darkness fell on the island didn’t seem too settling at that moment but a strange sense of relief was felt, to be around this bunch of incredible people. It rained the whole night and I was awestruck to witness the rawness of nature. The homestay has a few basic wooden huts built in the indigenous style by the staff, perching on the sparkling sea waters where the school of fish put up the show every now and then.

While we were there, we were accompanied by humming of birds, sounds of waves, whispers of winds, playfulness of baby sharks and barracudas, and sometimes the warmth of the sun and other times the wrath of the thunderstorms, and it was all surreal. We breathed abundance of peace, silence, tranquility everyday.

We stayed here for 6 divine days without any materialistic comfort such as AC, fan, TV, shower, electricity, attached bathroom, fancy concrete structure or even the mirror, yet we felt complete, missed NOTHING. The homestay gave us the safe shelter underneath we slept peacefully on the very comforting mattress. We left the wooden windows and doors open always so the cool breeze passed through, and had carried Odomos so got less troubled by the mosquitoes. Jousuba connected us to the real luxury of life, it is where life touched us without any superficial comfort or barriers. Since the homestay was on the remote island far away from the town, it would be foolish to expect 24/7 electricity or an advanced infrastructure facilities as the generator runs on disel to provide basic electricity for 10 hours a day which was sufficient. But what was more remarkable was Ferdi had managed to secure Starlink which ran quite smoothly throughout, though we didn’t quite miss it. Since Ferdie has worked as a tour guide in Raja Ampat for more 13 years, he knew every corner of the whole Raja Ampat so well and guided his adorable staff to take us to some stunning places around on his new gorgeous boat whenever we wanted. The clear blue-waters to which the homestay opened itself is an incredible place for snorkelling, and I just refused to be off the water. Such was the marine richness around the stay.

Never to forget, as we were vegetarians, we had placed special request for vegetarian food and they ensured to serve delicious meals everyday without even repeating the menu for once. Ferdi and his team (Grace, Pappa, Luis, Wilson and many more) are people with kind heart, gracious smile and generous hospitality. They are true givers, and served us with utmost sincerity and love throughout our stay. I couldn’t believe that my eyes welled up on the day of departure with an anticipation of emptiness I would feel after leaving this heavenly paradise and pious people. I truly hope and pray that I go back here soon and re-live those magical days again as I have left a piece of my heart here. I’m sure I will. Deeply grateful to the team Jousuba to have this place created, and for the love and care showered. We have a long way ahead with you.

  • We had an unforgettable stay at Jou Suba Homestay. The island is truly stunning and tranquil, with pristine beaches and a well-preserved reef right in front of the house—ideal for peaceful walks and relaxation. It’s a serene escape where we were able to unwind completely.

The bungalows are spacious and thoughtfully designed, featuring comfortable mattresses, mosquito nets, and ours was located over the water. The food was outstanding—without a doubt, the best we had during our 2-week trip—and we were treated to fresh fruit at every meal. Fernandin’s wife is a culinary genius!

We also had the pleasure of enjoying boat trips with manta rays and exploring the stunning Aljui Bay, both offering exceptional snorkeling opportunities.

Ferdinan, the owner, was incredibly attentive, communicative, and helpful, speaking good English. He truly exemplifies hospitality. We wholeheartedly recommend this homestay to anyone looking for a peaceful, memorable experience!

  • We really enjoyed our stay in Jou Suba Homestay. The island is beautiful, reef in good condition and there’s a lots to see. You can walk around the island and it is really peaceful as there is only one other homestay on the whole island and the beaches are picture perfect.

The bungalows are spacious and they have nice verandas with loungers or hammocks. We also had a nice quality mattress a flawless mosquito net and a fan to give some breeze at night.

The food was really good. Probably the best we had in our 5 weeks in Raja Ampat. We are vegetarians and we were catered really well with tofu, tempeh, eggs and delicious vegetables. We also had some fruit on every meal which is a rare treat in the islands.

We did a couple of boat trips with our boatman & guides Oskar and Elvis. They don’t speak much English, but know the area very well and are nice company.

The owner Ferdinan speaks excellent English and communication with him was very easy. The trips are a little bit on the pricier side, but also very well arranged and they even had safety vests on board.

I got really sick during our stay and Ferdinan was most helpful. He even sent someone to get me soda when I couldn’t eat anything but needed energy.

We can warmly recommend this homestay.

  • Island paradise with great and spacious bungalows (we stayed at one of the newer ones). Food was probably the best on our 2 weeks trip with lots of variety. Dining area setup is a bit strange though and bench was not very comfy to sit for too long😅 Walk around the island at low tide (20-30 minutes) or book a snorkeling trip to beautiful Tamaku or big yefnabi reef. House reef is great too (left and right, past the sandy parts). We did a day trip to Wayag which is quite pricey, well worth the money though due to its stunning landscape and views. About a 2 hours boats trip and hence closer to many other areas you might stay. We very much enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back! FYI: They are currently setting up Starlink. While we have mixed feelings about that (vibe killer) it might be worth knowing for others.

    • Hi Fabio thank You for your really great review
      We really appreciated 😉
Well just to let You know that we did not set up the starlink yet still in process
And it will be set it up only for few hours then off it daily and it very helps for us also because we are very remoted island and always bad connection sometime lost it and is not good for us in urgent condition no connection that is why, goverment wants to help us with that and we just use it for special time then off it again;)

  • We had a great visit to jou suba. It is a true island paradise. If you are looking for a tropical island all to yourself, this is the place for you. The snorkeling at the house reef to the left is good if you swim past the sandy parts and to the right it is good for a short ways. The food is really good with lots of variety and a tasty afternoon snack. They even gave us fresh coconuts to drink. Snorkeling at Tamaku reef and big yefnabi are beautiful. We would definitely recommend this homestay.

  • I stayed 3 nights to do the wayag trip (daytrip) and I really loved my stay.
I was the only guest so I had the whole island / beach for me!
The water on the island is crystal clear like the maldives! I had really nice beach days. The island/ the beach / the water is different than the other island in Raja Ampat where I stayed. So I would not want to miss my stay in Jou Suba. Food was always good.

  • Paradise adventure: unforgettable days with Ferdinand in Raja Ampat. It’s worth going the extra mile.

Our stay with Ferdinand was simply fantastic! Jou Suba stands for hospitality and warmth and that is the program here.

The homestay is a little off the beaten track in Wasai, which makes it special. Here we were able to go snorkeling in very special places away from the standard tourist crowds on untouched coral gardens, dive with manta rays and finally discover Wayag all to ourselves. The experience was simply indescribable.

Ferdinand is a great and thoughtful host. He welcomed us at the airport, arranged tickets for the ferry, organized the transfer to the next homestay and made all the other excursions possible and took us to everything we were interested in.

He speaks very good English. As a result, we were able to communicate well and learn a lot about the culture and life on the island. He and his family gave us a warm welcome and treated us like part of their family. We would particularly like to highlight Oskar and Thomas, who often accompanied us on the boat and are simply super talented.

We experienced so many great things! We were able to try out different fishing methods with the boys, watch Oskar snorkeling for lobsters in the dark, Ferdinand showed us his village on the neighbouring island and we bought fish from the fishermen in the middle of the water. The absolute highlights were our Wayag trip with Oskar, including an overnight stay. We had the indescribable island chains and formations, including an adventurous viewpoint, all to ourselves. Amazing.

Last but not least, the last evening. WOW. Ferdinand and his family built a campfire on the beach. We watched the fire together while he, Oskar and another islander played the guitar and sang. The atmosphere was magical. So beautiful 🙂

The food that Ferdinand and his family cooked for us was the best we have eaten in the whole of Indonesia. From tofu to fish, great pancakes and varied vegetable dishes – we were always well catered for. There was a large selection and everything tasted delicious and was cooked with love.

When we arrived, we were speechless. The beach in front of the homestay was simply heavenly, with huge shells and clear water. In the evening, the atmosphere there was magical.

Our hut was cozy and located directly on the beautiful beach. We were able to swim in the water all day and watch schools of fish jumping around. The sun loungers and the hammock in the shade were super comfortable. There was even a fan. And while we struggled with the lack of wind in other homestays, there was always a cool breeze here.

Our five days at Ferdinand were unforgettable and filled our hearts with many great experiences that were definitely the highlight of our 6-week trip to Indonesia. We are writing this review 3 weeks later and still have a huge smile when we think back to that time.
We can recommend the homestay to everyone and are already looking forward to seeing you again!

A thousand thanks to Ferdinand and his great team for this unforgettable time

    Tina and Tobi

    **********

Wahnsinn.

Last but not least, der letzte Abend. WOW. So schön 🙂

WOW. So schön 🙂

  • What a hidden Gem.
We had the pleasure to stay with Jou Suba for 3 nights and it was absolutely amazing.

Ferdinand came from Waisai to pick us up at Gam and brought us to this wonderful island.

Even if there are 2 more Homestays, the two brand new Bungalows with comfy beds here are absolutely the best. The bathroom is brand new, too and the Family couldn’t do more to make us happy.

The food was amazing, with a lot of variety and always that much, that the 4 of us couldn’t finish (Sorry for that Marina. It was really good, but just to much🤭)

When we left, we really felt like leaving a part of family behind.

I should maybe mention, that we were the only western people on the island during our stay, so if you are looking for a place to share trips with others, this is not your place.
But if you are looking for a quiet island where you can experience family life and even help in the Kitchen, Go for it!

Thanks again to the whole Family who made this trip so super special and memorable. We will be back for sure and hope to see you again.

    • Thank You very much for your stayed with us and Thank You very much also for your great review

  • the small island is nice and the position very good. I appreciated the possibility to get free rides to the village in the closeby island. The rest of their trips are very expensive and the food is very poor, mainly eggs in small quantity. We had to ask to have fish at least once or they would not have served any. If you are looking for a familiar accomodation this is not the place for you. To me it seemed more like a western resort

    • Well, on behalf of Jousuba we say thank You for your this reviews to make us more better and we also apologise first for the food because on that periode it was windy or local bad weather in our area so no one of the boat came from Waisai the main city of Raja Ampat to bring us more food and no any fisherman bring us also fish because of the weather that is why You had no much food as your expectation but we kept give You food even not same as what You expect, also one more thing when You arrived it was election day of all in indonesia on february 14, 2024 so, few of my staff also joined the election to choose new Mr President that is why, You did not have a lot of food as Your expectation otherwise the guests before you and after You always thanks to us at Jousuba because of more plenty of food with our local and simple kitchen.
And for prise already in the brackets above so before You booked i think You already read it and all of the guests wants to come to us always contact me to set up everything before arrival same as french guys Father and Son were staying at the periode and You joined us for free to village they stayed with us for 2 weeks since february 2-15, 2024 and everyday they did trips and excursion with us by boat to wayag, pyainemo, aljui bay and many other destination and this their second time to visit us with same trip and today march 3, 2024 we just finished to serviced 2 of their french guys that they recomended to us after they leave on february 15, 2024 and soon they will come back again to us
So once again we thank You and apologise to had to reply this review to make more clarification and last we are local. I and my family are local and really local not wester resort only local homestay with simple food and very simple life

  • My partner and I stayed at Jou Suba for 4 nights early January. We had a wonderful experience. Ferdinand was great in assisting us with anything we needed. He was also very easy to contact in the lead-up to our trip.

We were in touch with Ferdinand from the moment we booked as we both have dietary requirements. The accommodation is quiet remote (as expected) and as such, anything you need during your trip ensure to either bring with you or to reach out to Ferdinand to have it organized for your arrival. This includes food, drinks, etc.

They catered for both of us (myself as a vegan, my partner as a veggo) with no problem, and the food was really yummy and quite plentiful.

We had a great time. Ferdinand helped us organize our Wayag trip, and some of the best snorkelling with Mantas. Our last afternoon at Jou Suba we were visited by a group of Mantas right out the front of the accommodation so we got to just jump in the water and swim with them.

Ferdinand was also quite helpful in organizing our transfer to Jou Suba and back to Waisai. Everything ran quite smoothly.

  • We spent 4 nights at Jou Suba Homestay and Ferdinand and his people took excellent care of us in every way. The accommodation is really only basic but sufficient. For example, the quality of the mattresses is very good compared to other accommodations, as is the quality of the nets. A minor drawback during our stay was the renovation of the bathrooms and toilets. For all the bungalows, so there was only one bathroom and toilet. But the others were already being worked on, so this is only a temporary condition. The water for washing in the barrels is semi-salty, not sweet. As for the kitchen and food portions, it was the best place we have experienced in Raja Ampat. The portions were ample with plenty of fresh fish which was amazing. Seeing the life of the natives was something original for us, including the opportunity to cook with the natives. The swimming beach was excellent and the best of the accommodation we have known.
Ferdinand made every effort to make sure we were happy. He did everything in his power, addressed any requests or requests immediately and tried to accommodate us when possible. Communication was very good thanks to him. Excursions were available and it was up to us exactly which ones to use. I can only recommend the accommodation at Jou Suba, including the approach of Ferdinand who speaks English very well. Of course you have to bear in mind that these are only basic conditions, in full harmony with nature.

  • We had a lovely stay in Jou Suba. We were the only guests for 5 nights and we had such a lovely time with Alfred’s family, the family who lives there. We went fishing and ate the fish on the bbq, we had coconut to drink, and plenty to snorkel just outside our bungalow. The mattress was very comfortable and everything was simple but very clean. Also Ferdinand made sure we had everything we needed and made sure we felt properly welcomed.
The photos are not up to date though. They are in process of rebuilding some of the homestay. There is only one toilet and shower on site for everyone. The extras toilet were not in use. Our bungalow though were in excellent condition and felt that we had our own private beach. But we did have a little walk to the toilet.
Overall it was a great stay for us, very authentic and felt that we were living just as a local, which is kind of what we wanted! We had our own private boat and explored Wayag with a night camping, absolutely recommended! It’s magical out there! But make sure you have a decent speed boat, see is quite rough on the way to get there!

  • Our group of six stayed at Jou-Suba Homestay for three nights in July 2023, where the hospitality of Ferdinand, Chris, Carlos, and their crew was nothing short of exceptional. Their meticulous care for our needs was indeed the highlight of our visit.

    – THE PEOPLE & ACCOMODATION-

Ferdinand proactively reached out before our trip to carefully plan everything, ranging from meals to diving equipment. He also secured the appropriate boat for our distant dive sites, including those for spotting manta rays. Our visit to his neighboring village was a cherished memory. An unforgettable bonfire on our last night, where we shared stories, added a unique warmth to our experience. The team went above and beyond to accomodate us – they are the highlight of our trip. We are so blessed to have met such amazing people and understand some local culture through our trip.

The accommodations, akin to most homestays in the area, were basic but commendable, considering the remoteness of the location. The team’s impressive efforts to provide fresh water and food throughout our stay was noteworthy. Despite ongoing renovations, we were comfortably accommodated in a newly completed room. The unmatched views of the beach and the seclusion of the area was breathtaking and definitely worth a visit.

    – DIVING & EXCURSIONS –

Our diving excursions, led by the exceptional dive master Chris, adhered largely to plan. His outstanding safety standards and knowledge deserve our recommendation for any prospective diver in Raja Ampat. The team was also vigilant about recent feedback at the sites, even altering our dive plan to The Passage due to recent crocodile sightings. While the remoteness of West Waigeo does entail longer boat rides, the exclusive sightings of mantas, dolphins, and possible whale signs make it well worth the journey. We also enjoyed a beautiful day out to Fam Islands which was well worth the trip. The team was quick to recommend alternate sites and possible locations to see wildlife when we requested. The manta sighting at nearby yefnabu was especially memorable – more so since it was low season for mantas in Raja Ampat.

Our heartfelt thanks to Ferdinand and his team for a remarkable experience. We hope their joyous spirits continue to brighten all their guests’ visits. We eagerly anticipate our return!

    • Thank You Pravin and Friends for come and stayed in Jousuba.
We were very happy to had You with us
We wait for your next return;)
And also thank You for Your great review;)

  • We stayed as a couple with Ferdinand and his family for 5 nights at the end of June 2023

There are a kind family and the food is good. You get 3 meals a day, with snacks at the end of the morning and afternoon.

Snorkeling in front of the homestay is really good. Where you can play around with a school of thousands of fusiliers. We especially liked the coral garden towards the left of the homestay (to the north) , which starts after about 200meters of sandy bottom.

We did a Wayag trip with Raymond and Ahmed which was an experience we will never forget! Sharks, jellyfish and whales we seen during our trip there. The view from the tip of the mountain was also spectacular

We did 4 dives with Ahmed who was the dive master during our stay there. Every dive was briefed professionally with a drawing of the topography and the expected fauna which could be seen there. We even saw 6 Mantas during our first dive there which was amazing since we’re not in “Manta season”. We also felt safe throughout all our dives there

The room is spacious with a good mosquito net. The bathroom was simple but clean. Electricity was on from sunset to about 10pm daily.

Yefkabu is a great location to explore West Waigeo. We walked around the island during sunset, but unfortunately the beach was filled with plastic trash which comes in from the sea. The homestay itself and nearby beach is kept clean daily

We would definitely recommend this homestay!

Terima Kasih Ferdinand, Raymond, Ahmed dan semua keluarga di Jou Suba!

    • Thank You Henk and Marije for Your review.
On behalf of Jousuba homestay we are really appreciated.
And for plastic we are now clean the beach around because the plastic come from the sea but we are trying our best now to keep clean of the beach around.
Anyway thank You very much for Your great review and we are very happy to had You with us;)

  • We stayed at JouSuba Homestay as a couple for 5 nights in April 23.

Overall, we liked it very much. It was a pity that Ferdinan was not on site and thus the communication with the family was limited to an absolute minimum (since we unfortunately speak very little Indonesian).

We were the only guests on the island at the time.
The reef is beautiful – both to the right of the jetty and to the left once you have swum about 300m over sandy areas.

At the beginning the food was good. After 3.5 days, both the vegetable and banana supplies were exhausted, so there were only combinations of rice, pasta, potatoes, eggs and fish. Presumably, this was still much more varied than anything the family usually eats, since the distance to the market in Waisai is considerable after all.
In any case, the food was always well seasoned.

Everyone was friendly and Ferdinan called every day to ask what we needed.

The seating on the beach is no longer available and neither were the hammocks in the tree, so we were very glad to have our own hammocks with us.
A good place to come to rest away from it all.

As reported in other comments, many new cabins are being built. Whether it will still be worth the long trip when the huts are all finished is hard for me to say.

We did the snorkeling trip to Ovo, Bianci and Mutus kecil.
Overall, I thought the snorkeling right at the island was just as rewarding, but we still enjoyed the trip.
I found the bizarre rocks of Ovo to be very beautiful. Mutus kecil, however, is not worth it at all – a tiny island with lots of garbage and the scaffolding of a homestay on it – the opposite of romantic.

Yef Kabu itself can be circumnavigated on foot in about an hour at low tide. Swimming is much longer.

Many thanks to the whole family for the friendly hospitality and also thanks that you immediately bought us new tea bags from the next island when the tea was all gone. 🙂

  • Had a pretty great time at Jou Suba.

    POSITIVES:

    – You’ll be welcomed with the family waiting for you, and fresh coconuts cut for you to drink soon after your arrival.

    – Ferdinand was charismatic and friendly. Checked in on us daily to see how we are doing and to see if there’s anything we need or to arrange any trips. This was a nice touch.

    – Any requested trips (snorkelling, diving etc) are arranged and confirmed very quickly

    – Food. Always fresh fish and fruit. Great variety. Suitable for vegetarians, also! Snacks available at 5pm too! You will share a food hut with the neighbouring homestay, using different long tables.

    – The kids. Always smiling and waving and up for playing. They will often introduce themselves and their names! Loved Alfred and Teo too!

    – The hosts and kids will often teach you Indonesian and Papuan words. I loved this!

    – Day trip to Wayag was incredible. The (tricky) up-hill hike to get to the lookout is worth it! Shark Point snorkelling was life changing as Alfred threw fresh fish into the shallow water, bringing in dozens of reef sharks. We swam face-to-face with them in the shallow. Admittedly, we barely moved and moreso floated among them. As they become more comfortable with you, they can come as close as 20cm from your face!
Great little coconut stops on islands for a drink is a plus, too.
    Ask for snorkel trips!

-The house reef was beautiful! Try snorkelling around the island, or swim far out along the drop off of the water. We saw sharks, turtles and cuttlefish and eels. Youll come across pretty coral, too.

    – Spacious rooms with comfortable beds/pillows. Beautiful watching the sunset or sunrise, and hearing the ocean waves as you fall asleep. We withstood a major storm whilst there and no water made it into the room.

    – Beautiful shells and water

    NEGATIVES:

    – Loads of rubbish swept up on the shore (this is obviously NOT Jou Souba’s fault). They do rake up rubbish daily to help with this

    – This is mostly our fault, we forgot to advise in advance that one of us couldn’t eat Gluten. I advised Ferdinand of this and said that even plain rice for breakfast is fine, and fruit will be helpful for the GF person. We had rice serviced for breakfast once, but not after that so this person couldn’t have breakfast or snacks for the rest of the trip. Again, I acknowledge this was on us too, but we’d hope some rice or just fruit for breakfast or snacks could be managed.

    – The electricity often came on at different times of the night. One of my friends rooms did not have a working light switch so was unable to turn his light off all night.

    – The neighbouring homestay played loud music on one of the nights I was there. Very loud, and after 1am.

    – On the last 2 days of our trip, the drinking water and hot water for coffee/tea was contaminated and tasted and smelt of fish. They thankfully also had bottled water available on those days.

    – As Ferdinand was offering the exact same phrasing and pitches to all visitors about leaving as a family etc, he, at times, sounded a little sales-y and didn’t feel authentic. This matters to some people, not others.

Note: Bring your own towel or use your beach towel for your showers as you will not receive one.

There are multiple homestays on the island, and more being built. Homestays are immediately to the side of Jou Souba.

The good points actually outweigh the bad.
This place has beautiful, beautiful people. So kind and happy. The trips available are wonderful, and the snorkelling is quality.

    Thanks, guys.

  • This was one of our best stays (out of 8!) in Raja Ampat. We spent 2 nights at Jou Suba at the end of March.

We felt really welcoming thanks to the smiling faces. The bungalows are spacious and clean, with good chairs, really good matresses (on floor) and multiple clotheslines (helpful to hang out clothes without making a mess of the veranda).

The main host, Ferdinan, wasn’t present at the time we were there, but he called us every day to make sure we had a great time, good food, and well organised trips! We regret that we organised a (very disappointing) trip to Wayag and Aljui Bay through another homestay instead of asking Ferdinan and his team.

The food was really good and plentiful, even for vegetarians, with fruits after. Between meals, snacks were even available!

During our stay, Alfred brought us to the mantas, and we saw 4! It is a delight to be in the water with the mantas, with just one (our) boat instead of multiple boats with snorkelers and divers like at Manta Sandy. Afterwards, we stopped at the reef of Yefnabi, which is one of the most stunning reefs we have seen in RA!

The housereef in front of the homestay is nice too. Diverse both in fish and coral species. Alfred makes sure the beach in front is cleaned from plastics.

When walking around the island, you will see a lot of plastic waste, unfortunately. In addition, many homestays are being built at this moment. It is a pity since this means the peaceful and quiet atmosphere of Jou Suba / Yef Kabu will soon disappear.

  • I enjoyed three nights in this tropical paradise with the ocean lapping on the perfect beach only a few steps from the coconut tree outside my bungalow. The two families taking care of me were very friendly and kind. The children were absolutely delightful…always greeting me with big smiles and giggles as they played and did their chores. The weather didn’t cooperate for any day trips, but the reef in front was interesting.
A special thank you to Ferdinan who can communicate in English and helped me get around in Waisai and then, with texts to me and his staff at Jou Suba, made sure that I was enjoying every minute of my stay.

    (Marcel Pagnol).

  • I loved my 4 day stay in Jou Suba late Dec to early Jan 23! It was the first homestay I booked through stayrajaampat. Never having been to Raja Ampat before, it was a bit hard to decide where to stay and I picked this place after reading all the positive reviews . I was not disappointed! Ferdinan is the best host, a lovely and really friendly person who cares about his guests and their needs. He speaks excellent English and after I booked his place he contacted me straight away to tell me everything I needed to know about the homestay, transfers, tours etc. I met him on arrival and although he left that day, he stayed in contact by phone to make sure everything was ok. Although the homestay is simple, it is very clean and the bungalows are nice and new, set on the beach on a beautiful uninhabited island with a nice house reef. The guests are looked after by Ferdinan’s family, two lovely couples and their gorgeous kids who live in the village on a neighboring island and come to do the cooking and tours. The food was good and healthy with lots of fish, rice and vegetables and afternoon snacks. The tour to Aljui Bay and Tamaku reef I did with them was excellent and something I will always remember! The spectacular scenery and amazing corals in a place that doesn’t get visited by many is an experience of a life time! On New Year’s day Ferdinan invited me to visit the village on Mutus island which is a short boat ride away. It was a fantastic cultural experience and opportunity to see New Year’s celebrations the Papuan way with lots of food, traditional drum music and dancing in the streets. I would love to visit the village again! Thank you to Ferdinan, Alfred, Rebecca, Oscar,Marina and their beautiful kids for making my stay in Jou Suba so enjoyable. To anyone considering booking a RA homestay, please come and stay here, it is really good! I hope I can come again soon and stay a bit longer

  • I stayed at Jou Suba in late December for a few days. It’s a simple homestay, with a few bungalows located on a small island with a very decent house reef. Ferdinan has been amazingly helpful in the lead up, during and even after our stay, helping us to organise transport in Sorong. We was very receptive to our asks and feedback and took great care to ensure we had great time. We went on some amazing trips, whether a day trip to Wayag, a manta snorkelling trip or trips to some of the lesser known yet absolutely beautiful local reefs, recommended to us by Oscar, one of Ferdinan’s employees. I would recommend this homestay to anyone who’d like to stay in a more remote and quiet part of Raja Ampat, away from the more frequented areas.

Ferdinan, who runs thre homestay was an incredible host who took the time to work out our needs and how he could help us with them. We did some of the most amazing snorkelling I ever did, and we really benefited from the local knowledge of the local knowledge of our guides who took us off route to show us some great spots that we would never have known to visit or even ask to visit. We saw mantas, turtles, fish and beautiful coral. I also loved the day trip to wajag. I’d absolutely recommend this homestay, and hope to make it back there. Enjoy

  • Stayed at Jou Suba for 8days. It is a remote island with a fine sand beach and a nice coral reef right in front of the homestay where you could spend a few days snorkling. Big fish schools are in front of your bungalow. The owner Ferdinan speaks good english and can answer all your questions and organzing trips for snorkling. If you are there do not miss the manta spot, Tamaku and Bianci.Ferdinan takes good care when I was there and called daily to make sure I am fine and not lucking anything.
    Food was good and enough.

  • Four of us had the most wonderful stay at Jou Suba, a truly unique and special island. Ferdinan was an excellent host, meeting us in Sorong and ensuring all our boat trips were well organised. We did have difficulty in Sorong getting a sim card to fit our phone to enable us to contact Ferdinan, but if you Whats app him, he can tell you what to do. Anyway Ferdinan was well organised and our trip went really well. Wonderful peaceful island, great huts and lovely food. Staff were very friendly and we enjoyed a special concert on last night. Last night was special, swimming in warm water, watching the stars and the lightning in the distance. Many thanks Ferdinan and staff.

  • Our stay at Jou Suba Homestay was truly one of the best of our 3 weeks in Raja Ampat in October 2022! We have visited numerous homestays this time and during our first trip to Raja Ampat in 2017. Ferdinand was our most dedicated host so far! Even before we arrived, he answered all our questions, took care of our more or less important requests (Bintang ;-)), organized our daily trips, and helped with telekomsel simcard troubles in Sorong. He took us on a very special (because magically we were the only tourists that morning) trip to Wayag, where we enjoyed the stunning view and snorkeled with (small) black tip sharks. During another marvelous snorkeling trip, we saw numerous mantas very close to the surface – again, we were alone without the usual boat traffic of popular spots like Manta Sandy. Beautiful soft corals can be seen close to the homestay and the house reef is nice too.
Jou Suba is well maintained and exceptionally clean, there even are nice flower beds between bungalows, dining, and bathroom area. The bungalows are cleverly arranged: although there are a few of them we still had the feeling of privacy in ours. The food was tasty, fresh fish every day, delicious snacks (fresh coconut, cakes, and the best donuts!). He even organized lobster on our request (only 150k from the village nearby!!!). On our last evening Ferdinand even organized a little farewell party and played traditional music with some staff members. We are very grateful to Ferdinand and his staff/family for an unforgettable experience!

  • We had a wonderful stay at Jou Suba homestay between 18-22 Oct. It was definitely private island with long white sand beach and nice house reef.
There were six bungalows with two area of shared bathrooms and toilets. The bungalows were simple but clean. Towels and life vests were supplied. Shared bathroom and toilet were always kept clean.
The house reef was good with diversity of corals and fishes. We saw baby black tip sharks and even manta jumping in front of our room. We had a breath taking snorkeling with 7 mantas and did snorkeling at the mangrove area.
Food was tasty, little spicy as we loved. Fresh coconut juice was served extra. We also had a small party with lobster while staffs played small guitar on the day before leaving.
All staffs were very friendly, helpful and caring.
Ferdinan, owner of the homestay, texted me about a month before we arrived to make sure he can prepare all things we need including boat transfer, day trip to Wayag, Pyainemo, star lagoon and nice spot for boat snorkelling. He also facilitated our stay at Sorong. Super Ferdinan set up everything perfectly.
Thanks so much for taking good care of us. We looking forward to be back.

  • Had a wonderful stay at Jou Suba. Very kind staff, fantastic food, clean, and comfortable. The island is completely private and other than the host family, you feel totally isolated. Brilliant sunrises from the bungalow. The House reef is quite nice with a lot of healthy soft and hard coral, especially to the right of the homestay. There is a massive school of fusiliers right at the drop-off that is fun to swim through.

Great night snorkeling right out front as well. Went out twice and saw walking sharks, crocodile flathead, squid, batfish, blacktip reef sharks, a seahorse, tons of crustaceans, and plenty of other nocturnal creatures.

Lucked out and managed to catch a big group of Mantas off Yefnabi that were feeding in the craziest plankton soup I’ve ever seen–no wonder life in the Dampier Straight is so prolific–and we went early to Piaynemo and had the entire place to ourself. A big flock of Eclectus parrots flew cinematically overhead as we entered the bay and we got a bird’s eye view of a big black tip cruising the shallow reef from the viewpoint; the whole experience was surreally beautiful.

Ferdinand was helpful setting up taxis to and from the ferry and even made sure we got into our hotel once we arrived back in Sorong.

Thanks again Jou Suba for the wonderful experience.

  • We booked 5 nights in JOU-SUBA in September 2022 thanks to the many very positive reviews we had seen on the site “STAY RAJA AMPAT”.
We were looking for an extraordinary adventure away from tourists, and close to some places to visit: Wayag, Pyanemo and snorkeling spots, which we were able to do at reasonable prices
Ferdinand phoned us every night to arrange the excursions and make sure everything was going well for us, he was on top throughout our stay.
Thanks also to our boat drivers Oscar and Alfred who allowed us to see breathtaking landscapes, sumptuous snorkeling spots, manta rays, turtles, magnificent corals, black tip sharks, all in a giant aquarium
The host family was caring for us, the lovely children, and very respectful.
The hearty and succulent meals, thank you for the good donuts.
The accommodation at the top in front of a beautiful beach with magnificent sunrises.
Snorkeling 2 meters from the beach and starting on the left with sumptuous corals and a multitude of fish.
It was a very nice experience cut off from the world, without a telephone network for a total disconnection.

It is by getting closer to the “Kri” civilization that we already regret not having stayed longer at JOU-SUBA.

I hope we can come back one day, we already miss the families, THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR WELCOME.

Do not overwhelm the inhabitants of all these islands of Raja Ampat, regarding the waste that we can unfortunately see in some places.

    WE ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE!!!

They do what they can to pick them up and burn them, but it must be demoralizing, the sea rejects them every day.

  • This was our most disappointing experience in R4.
    1. The island is full of plastic. Nobody takes care of the beach. Plenty of waste is all around. We have not found other places on our 4 week visit as dirty like this island.
    2. The natural environment suffers. When we arrived in August 2022 we found a big bird, something like a vulture, taken from the jungle with clipped wings there. In the little house reef we found fishing nets full of dying reef fish. The house reef is small and poor. Wide sloops of the reef are heavily damaged. Also the reefs around are heavy exploited during the last two years. Small fish, mediocre corals only.
    3. The huts are ok, but why we got the worst one? There are about 15 huts and there are people living in every hut. It is not idyllic at all. The nicest huts were occupied by the families living there.
    4. The people are not unfriendly. But this is the best thing to be said. We felt we are disturbing them and we have never felt to be welcome at all. They didn’t took notice from us if possible. They chew a lot of betel speeding it at the beech. Most of the time they tried to hide to avoid contact at all. Food was light and shadow.
    5. The excursions, which excursions? We had a nice day waiting for a trip which never happened. The owner forgot to communicate this to the staff. We made two trips to the Mantas and for snorkelling. The most uninspired staff I found in Raja Ampat.
    6. English speaking? Only the owner in Sorong does this, but he was not there. Because of floodings and deseases and his wife. Communication with him was friendly but without the proper results. He was mostly worried about his money. Asking very high prices too. He disorganised our trips. We decided soon to leave the island, but he was only interested to get his money.

A critic to stayrajaampat: if you are asking for prebooking you must be able to guarantee the quality. We had no possibility to contact you from this remote island. So finally we paid for the nights we never spend there

So this review is a warning. Better find a nice place somewhere else.

    • We’re sorry to hear of this Hartung.

Was there no mobile phone signal at all during your stay at Jou Suba? Booking confirmation emails provide a local Homestay Association phone number to call in the event of problems like these. If you had contacted that number at any time, even after after leaving Jou Suba, a refund or alternate accommodation could have been arranged for you.

Your report of captive wildlife is most concerning, and is grounds for suspension of Jou Suba’s Homestay Association membership. We have emailed you for more information about this.

Thank you for taking the time to report your experience, and we hope that your other stays were much more enjoyable.

    • Dear Sir

      Thanks and regards

  • Nice homestay with a really good reef near it.
Food is very good and abundant.
It’s possibile to organize tours to visit waiang or to see mantas also in August.

    • We also saw manta rays near yefnabi, it was crazy, wobbegong shark and the trip to Wayang is long but it is truly unforgettable.
Ferdinad is really nice and helpful

  • We stayed for 4 nights at Jou Souba and totally enjoyed our stay! The island is beautiful, you are at your one, the coral reef is nice (some parts are really great) and the food is delicious! Even though Ferdinan wasn’t there, he coordinated everything from Sorong and asked us daily 1-2 times by phone if everything was ok. The staff is very friendly, very attentive (e. g. we were looking for a place to hang our clothes, so they just made a small line and after snorkling 3 new cloth lines were done). Food was really varied, tasty, plenty and one of the best in whole Raja Ampat. Coconuts are served fresh, when ever you ask for. So all in all we just had a great tine and definitely would recommend to go to Jou Souba, even if the journey is quite long and expensive!

  • We just returned from a week at Jou Suba and it was the highlight of our time in Raja Ampat. The bungalows sit on a gorgeous wide white sand beach with turquoise water lapping the shore. The reef starts right in front of the bungalows and it is very beautiful. There was a large fish ball on the reef 100 m from the bungalow with many thousands of fish. The reef is very colorful and healthy. A whale came right in to the edge of the reef while we were there. Rebecca is a fantastic cook- she used local spices to give everything a nice spicy taste. Food was also plentiful and always fresh. The stars at night were mesmerizing and there is no light pollution there. Jou Suba is much closer to Wayag than Kri, Gam or Mansuar making the trip cheaper and shorter if you decide to go. It is best to WhatsApp Ferdinan two days before you arrive so he can arrange transport from Waisai (about 3 hours) and buy enough fuel for your day trips you may have planned. This was a proper Robinson Crusoe style experience and we loved every minute. You will likely have all of West Waigeo to yourself and the reefs in the area are absolutely stunning. The family that lives on the island are very nice and the children love to have guests around. If you think about bringing gifts for them, new or used snorkeling masks would probably be very well received!

  • We loved our 4 night’s stay on this small, isolated island with Alfred and his family.
Ferdinan was not there when we stayed but took great care to organize transportation and facilitate communication.

It is the perfect place for a quiet stay, without stress and close to nature.
The sunrises just in front of the bungalows are splendid, with the sound of the waves and the birds.
The bungalows are simple and clean.
The food is good and abundant (don’t miss the fresh coconuts).

There is good snorkeling from the beach, with a HUGE school of fish all the time in front, 5m under the buoy.
Oscar also took us to the nearby island of Yefnabi where the snorkeling was truly EXCEPTIONAL.
What we liked best: the moments of sharing with the family (some Indonesian words are a plus) and their very nice children.

We will keep the memory of these wonderful moments for a long time.

    • Thank You Sir for your great review i am so sorry was not there because at the moment i had another urgent things to did in Sorong with my wife and my son also at the place where i am teaching English for Papuan kids that is why i was not there and just took care everything by phone with you also with my staff..but once again thank you for stayed in my homestay and made my family in there like your family so you also all the guests have been stayed with us and the guests will be coming more, i and my staff or my family at the homestay try to do the best of the best to all of you as a family so you will come as guest but you will go as part of our family;)

  • Dates 9th – 13th May 2022

Myself and my partner Carly stayed at Jou Suba homestay for 4 nights.
little did we know that these 4 nights would become one of the most memorable 4 nights of our life’s, we did not want to leave !!

Ferdinan was extremely welcoming and made us feel like the homestay was our home. Speaks very fluent english and always made sure we were comfortable and having an amazing time. Ferdinan also helped us with our travels from the airport, to the ferry and boat trip to the island to make sure everything ran smoothly for us.

Ferdinan took us on a trip to Wayag which was beyond beautiful. ferdinan went above and beyond to make our trip super special.
the staff at the homestay Alfred, Oscar, Roni , Marina , Robeka and Almin are beautiful people. They made us feel like Family. They sang to us every night, cooked us lobster and the food they prepared was amazing.

The Kids at the homestay are some of the most beautiful kids you will ever meet. we played with them for hours each day they also sang to us and made the trip just that much better.

The Reef on the homestay is very good, plenty of fish and the coral is very healthy there.

The Facilties at the homestay are very good. unlike most other facilties in raja, rooms are cleaned daily and the staff do everything possible to make you feel like a VIP guest.

Overall, we recommended this homestay for everyone travelling to Raja Ampat and wanting the best experience possible ! if you are looking for an experience of a lifetime i would deffitneley choose jou suba.
the culture, and the beauty is like nothing you have seen before.

Thank you so much Ferdinan, the children and staff for welcoming us to your home.
we will deffinately be back in the future and we miss you all already!

  • We spent 7 nights in Jou Suba homestay. The owners are a young boy Ferdinand with his wife Grace. Both speak excellent English. They are very nice and will do everything for your satisfied stay. Jou Suba is about 3 hours by boat from Waisai. It is far away but you will have peace of mind from other people. There are no boats with tourists around, only local long boats a few times a day. It’s so remote, but so beautiful, we loved it. The place is perfect. Right in front of the house is a beach for swimming at low tide as well as at high tide. There is only one homestay on the island, but it builds more houses around the island. Perhaps it will be as peaceful in the future and it will not happen the same as on KRI Island. Enjoy a lot of privacy in a secluded location from any village and other resorts. You can forget about the evening party. There is no shop on the island, there is no village, there is nothing, only you and a few locals still smiling and waving people. There are about 3 families with children on the island. Lots of kids playing in the water and fishing every day.
Bringing some sweets as a gift for them is not a bad idea, as some cigarettes and coffee for an evening session with adults. We were lucky, we were alone in homestay while staying in March. Jou Suba is on flat atoll and there is much better weather than on KRI Island, there are no hills, no clouds. Nearby are destinations such as Piaynemo, Rufas, Melissas Garden. Some snorkeling is right by the house to the right and left of the beach in front of the accommodation. However, it is best to request a snorkeling trip. Prices for excursions are moderate and fair. We were snorkeling on Yefnabi Island (stop to sand island at low tide on the way) and on the neighboring island with the village. Corals are well-preserved and healthy. The boat is still close to you when you have a problem. You do not have to worry about health and safety. We saw the best snorkeling on a trip to the WAYAG lagoon (cheaper and shorter than from KRI island and it is the best of all RAJA AMPAT) Lots of big and small fish, turtles, snorkeling with sharks. The view from the cliff stops your breath. Ask Ferdinand to find nice snorkeling places on the way back. The beach is all day long for swimming and sunbathing. Are there any umbrellas on request. Food is the best of all RAJA AMPAT. The basis is rice, noodles, vegetables, eggs, tofu, fresh fish every day in different ways, and in the afternoon always some dessert. You will have fried bananas and coconuts, also some fruit. There is always plenty of drinking water, tea and coffee. There are no mosquitoes on the island, no sand flies, no snakes in the water or on the ground, no dangerous animals, no dogs. We haven’t seen any rats around. Paradise on Earth. The cottages are all day in the sun for a nice sunbathing in front of them. Nice view of the water directly from the terrace. Its spacious and airy (window), it does not rain into it (not the rule in other accommodation) On the teracce is a table and chairs. There are only mattresses on the ground with a mosquito net. Mattresses and pillows are fragrant and very comfortable. Towels are changed regularly as in the hotel. Sanitary facilities are perfect with mats on the ground, both way – western and Turkish, always clean. Every day they check and clean it several times. Mandy water is brackish. It was a beautiful jungle trip with local children. They found beautiful seashells for us, guided us around the island, showed sharks and found some coconuts for us. In the evening they played with us and danced. We can never forget it. Evening is a beautiful observation of the black and black sky.
Thanks for everything, we will definitely go back again.

• Ferdi and Grace do an awesome job at Jou-suba homestay. Ferdi speaks English very well, so it is easy to communicate with him about the interesting places to go. He is very knowledgeable about different places to go for snorkeling, diving or hiking. They have put a lot of effort into making this private island a nice place to stay, where you can go snorkeling strait out from the bungalows. The beds were comfortable, and there was even a place to change clothes in a back room, a necessity for our family of 5. They treated us like family. Grace and the other staff made some really tasty food for us. Thumbs up!

  • Hi

I am just in the planning stages of our first trip Raja Ampat.
I would like to stay in two different locations for variety and to get a greater understanding of the area.
After reading these great reviews above I am very interested in Jou Suba Homestay. How do we contact the owner for prices on available tours, pick ups from the ferry and possible transfers to our next accommodation.
I understand these prices are approximate due to fuel prices etc but they are important when planning an adventure holiday.

    • Hi Kristy

We publish all the price information provided by homestay owners. Website prices are as quoted, not approximate. Ferry pickup prices are quoted above in the “Transport/Getting there” section.

Hopefully Ferdinand will see your enquiry and give you an idea of the other prices you are seeking. If not, then you could estimate them by referring to similar prices published by nearby homestays.

    • Hi Kristy

  • We totally agree with all positive comments! It was a fabulous experience to stay at this paradise island and this homestay was simply the best of all six homestays we stayed in at Raja Ampat.

Only to mention a few highlights:

+ Ferdinan, Grace and everyone else of the family/staff where just amazing: super friendly, helpful and did everything to make our stay an unforgettable experience – they even organized a birthday party for me 🙂

+ Very tasty food – plenty of it! The family baked delicious cakes for us, served baked bananas in the afternoon and so on. We also got fresh coconuts whenever we wanted.

+ The house reef is wonderful: it’s huge and full of corals and fish. You can snorkel directly to your bungalow.

+ Beautiful Beach just in front of the Bungalows – you can even walk around the island within 45 minutes.

+ The bungalows are very nice: spacious, good mattresses, clean and with a fantastic view on the open see (fantastic sundowner!)
The sanitary rooms were also always clean.

We can really recommend to stay at this beautiful island in this great homestay! We’ll come back for sure.

Thank’s to Ferdinan, Grace and the whole Family!

    Stefan & Manuela

  • My wife and I stayed at this incredible homestay for 1 week. We wish it could have been longer. Grace and family were absolutely amazing. Smiles and good energy all the time. Grace does an outstanding job of always making sure her guests are happy. The food was the best! Always a variety and always plentiful. The bungalow and toilets are clean and well kept. Thank you so much Ferdinand, Grace and family for making our stay unforgettable. We also would like to say thank you to the children ( Susilo, Henra, Jabes, Dessi, Amalea, Nofa, Lidia, Magdalena, Glen, Denis, Jeflan) for making our stay extra special. We will see you all next year! Good luck and much love!

  • My stay at Jou Suba Homestay was perfect. I stayed almost two weeks. Ferdinand, his wife Grace and all the family had took care of me and my friend every day. The food was always tasty, with many choices and plenty. I loved my bungalow, with sunrise from the veranda and fresh wind in the afternoon. Everyday I could go for a snorkeling adventure around with one of the driver, Acer, Oscar and Gya. This is a perfect place for people that want to enjoy the nature, far from every noise and music and beach party. Only for true Raja Ampat lovers who are responsible for their impact on the ecosystem of this islands and do not come here just to have a sea holiday. Hope this place stays as I knew it.

  • We stayed eleven nights in this wonderful homestay. Ferdinand and his lovely family are very welcoming and gave us a home far from home on this small island. The food was delicious with fresh fish served every day on our veranda. The bungalow was very cosy, clean, spacious and had a comfortable bed. There is lots of nice coral and on two occasions we snorkeld around the whole island. Ferdinand is a great host and speaks very well English. He replied immediately to our booking request and came to pick us up in Waisai from the ferry. He organised for us trips to Wayag, a jellyfish river, Atlas pearl farm, Mutus village and several snorkling trips to nearby islands. Ferdinand is very reliable. He even organized the next two homestay bookings for us, so that we could easily continue our trip through Raja Ampat. Thank you Ferdinand, Alfred and your family for taking good care of us during our stay. We enjoyed your company very much! We highly recommend your homestay and hope that many guests will find their way to stay with you! Best wishes, Benji and Nicole

  • When dreaming of having an unusual holiday or planning to visit the real remote Raja Ampat incl. places like Wayag or Aljui Bay with its pearl farm or seldom visited local villages, then Jou Suba is definitely the place to stay.

The first highlight of your stay at Jou Suba is already the boat ride from Waisai to Jou Suba, passing through the narrow waterway of Kabui Passage.

My bungalow was new, spacious and clean. The meals were very tasty, a lot of fish, different vegetables, fruit and always plenty of it.

During my recent stay at Jou Suba, Ferdinand, the owner of Jou Suba and also a competent, fluently English-speaking official tourist guide organized some incredible excursions for me. Pianyemo or Aljui Bay are only a 45 min. boat ride away from the homestay. 2 new snorkeling sets can also be rented.

I really had an enjoyable and unforgettable stay and can only recommend it.

    • Hi Daniel,

I’m in the trip planning stage and your description about this Homestay sounds very attractive. Does this Homestay organize any wayag trip?
If so, how much is it?

      Thanks
