Diving with Arborek Dive Homestay

Sunday Diving: No diving on Sundays

Attention: Be careful not to confuse Arborek Dive Homestay with Arborek Dive Shop: These are two completely separate and unrelated businesses.

Arborek is a fantastic location for both snorkelling and diving, and provides the closest accommodation to the famed Manta Sandy, where you can snorkel and dive with Mantas. The waters beneath the Arborek jetty are full of fish and colourful soft corals bloom all over the jetty pilings. Be sure to bring your snorkelling gear.

  • My partner and i stayed with Arborek Dive(?) Homestay for 3 nights.

The positives: Rooms, food and location was okay. Hendricks, the manager, despite some problems described below, was an absolute treat to deal with. He tried his best to mitigate our issues to some extent(which was appreciated!) and was very understanding/apologetic about our situation.

The negatives: While the rooms was fine, the mattress was not. Massive indent in the middle. 140cm bed reduced to practically 80cm. Good if you like sleeping close to your partner, in tropical climate, without proper AC. Not so good if you enjoy somewhat sweat-less and intimate sleeping.

Also the hut, in comparison to other homestays, seemed quite unstable(and unsafe?). Some leakage from the roof during rain, not a problem for us, however, another guest mentioned leaking directly into the bed.

Pro-tip: Dont walk along the edges of the walkway. The walkway to the huts have loose boards. Imagine falling 2-ish meters into the water while going to the on-land bathroom at night. To make the need for repair obvious, i removed the loose boards and put them diagonally along the walkway. They put them back, in the exact same state of disrepair.

Diving safety and equipment Ok(in Raja terms).

However, our biggest issue as travellers coming with a singular purpose – diving. No boats to take us diving? Now i understand things can happend, but come on – atleast have the decency to let us know beforehand or make alternative arrangements. Apparently one boat had been in disrepair for a while, and at the same time, they thought it would be a good idea to rent the other one out on a private charter for 2 out of 3 diving days?.

We where lucky to get 1 dive with the local dive shop on day 1 despite them being fully booked(none else would take us), and after several remarks and complaints, they managed, after several complaints, to cough up a wobbly longboat to take us on 2 dives on day 2. Dive-boat appeared on day 3, which was nice.

  • Upon arrival at Arborek Dive Homestay, there was no one to greet me. I received no information about my bungalow, meal times, or the sanitary facilities. I obtained all this information from other guests.

Communication with the owner was unsuccessful; I received no response to my WhatsApp inquiries.

    The room was clean.

The mattress was worn out and uncomfortable. The walkway to the bungalow had some broken and loose boards, requiring extra caution. The toilet facilities were dirty and unhygienic.

The food provided to guests was meager and monotonous.

No diving took place. There was no boat and no guide.

Overall, I cannot recommend Arborek Dive Homestay.

  • We enjoyed the view from our bungalow, but this wasn’t our place.. staff and other guests where socializing and playing music until after midnight. If this is your thing, you’ll enjoy it. But if you prefer quiet evenings and rest, this is probably not your place. Breakfast was a bit small with only sweets, but lunch and dinner was ok. Arborek itself is a nice island and good spot to see manta’s!

  • Me and my friend stayed at Arborek Dive Homestay for 5 nights. The view was amazing and the reef around the island was abundant with marine life. The house reef in front of the homestay was mostly dead but if you swim further out it is very nice. There were sting rays and baby sharks that swam under our bungalow at night. The food was delicious and there was always plenty. I dived at their scuba shop too which was very professional and with new, good quality equipment. They also sorted a nice snorkelling tour out for us. The overwater bungalow had a comfy raised bed and it was a very big room and we had a sun lounger and hammock to relax on too. The people who worked at the homestay were all very nice and welcoming and it was a nice social vibe, playing cards with them in the evenings. The electricity was on from about 6pm to 6am or 7am so you had the fan on all night which was nice. On the island there is a big shop with lots of snacks you can buy. I would definitely stay again!

  • FEMALE TRAVELLERS READ THIS:
I had a mixed experience at Arborek Dive Homestay.

The positives: the location is beautiful and the diving itself was enjoyable. The dive equipment is basic and not the best quality, but it works. If you’re experienced and comfortable checking your own gear, it’s manageable. The accommodation and food are also basic but good and filling, and for the price it’s very good value. No complaints there. The permanent manager, Henrick, was genuinely kind, professional, and supportive.

During my stay, the temporary manager was Oves and one of the divemasters was Zach, and my experiences with them were very different.

Oves crossed some professional boundaries — including jokes about kissing, prolonged hand-holding, and long hugs that felt uncomfortable. That said, aside from this, he was sometimes pleasant to be around, had a good presence, and was very competent at his job. If it had only been Oves, I would likely have enjoyed my stay.

Unfortunately, Zach is what made me feel genuinely uncomfortable. From the start, he used inappropriate pickup lines and overly flirty comments. This escalated into jealousy that interfered with his professional behaviour. After we spoke directly, he admitted feeling jealous and said he didn’t like to “share.” I made it clear I was not interested, but he continued to ignore clear signals of disinterest.

There were multiple occasions where he became grumpy or difficult because I wasn’t behaving the way he wanted. He ignored me for an entire day during a group tour because he was upset that I had spent the previous evening talking to another man. He even withheld the dive photos he had taken because I didn’t want to hang out with him at night.

He also came to my bungalow uninvited to try and hang out. Despite me asking politely several times to be left alone, he kept pushing and did not want to go. Afterwards, he ignored me and acted passive-aggressively — even when I spoke directly to him — which was particularly stressful as he was my divemaster and responsible for my safety.

Both Oves and Zach were temporary staff, so it’s possible they may no longer be there and that the atmosphere could improve.

As a solo female traveller, I would not recommend this place. However, I can see it being a good option for couples, male travellers, or older guests.

  • I spent 5 days at Arborek dive homestay and had a great time diving there. Hendrick, who manages the diving operation, goes above and beyond to make sure everything goes well for everyone. The rental gear was in good condition and the dive trips were planned thoughtfully and transparently.

The homestay itself is a bit more of a mixed bag. On the one hand, the food was good and varied, with the exception of very basic breakfasts. The cabins are really basic but have great sunsets and are overall really scenic. On the other hand, the noise from the compressor is a bit of a nuisance and the lack of running water became a problem several times when there was no water left in the tank to shower and flush the toilet.

Overall, my advice would be to use the dive shop without hesitation, but consider the drawbacks of the homestay before staying there.

    grazie mille

  • Henrick and his friends were very welcoming. Henrick has a very good English which helps a lot. My room was clean and had a hammock on which I spent hours admiring the view.
The food was really good, diversed and in big quantities.
    The dives were amazing.
I loved staying at Arborek Dive Homestay, I highly recommend this place!

  • We had an amazing time at Arborek Dive Homestay! The staff was super nice and the diving instructor very professional! It were the best dives I’ve had in my life! The bungalow was basic but very nice and with an amazing view over the water. Communication with the staff was really good (Hendrik speaks very good english) and the food was great! The diving gear was in very good shape (my wetsuit was even still completely new). 10/10 would recommend!

  • We stayed at Arborek Dive Homestay for 1 night, and we wish we had more time in our holiday plans to stay there longer. The homestay, like every other homestay on all the other islands, was simple and provided basic needs – a bed, a toilet and food. The staff were lovely, and the food was really tasty. Diving with the homestay was possible, and other guests on site were diving every day – but due to our lack of time, we did not do any diving. The snorkelling however was great. There is no phone reception or wifi, which made the homestay a really peaceful place, and gave us time to chill out and relax before our next venture. Arborek Island is small but very built up. I would definitely recommend staying here

  • So make sure to not confuse the dive shop with the actual HOMESTAY.
I’d give the homestay 2 stars for the following reasons..
-there didn’t seem to be a person that was assigned to looking after guests. I’m not sure how it was supposed to be set up, but the boat driver who fetched us (Sam) is in the family but runs a different homestay. Sam was untrustworthy with his commitments and blew us off several times. There was a woman who cooked a little (very little- the food was sparse), but she never made any eye contact and did absolutlely nothing to help guests. I’m not sure if she was supposed to be managing, but wouldn’t lift a finger to find a key which resulted in me climbing through the window of my hut instead.
-Props to the older woman who cooked and washed dishes all day, but I feel she was getting no support nor supplies.
-Food was super sparse. One papaya was the only fruit for 10 people for two days and was under lock and key. Over-fried fish and tons of rice for meals.
-bathrooms were fairly sparse for the number of people and quite unsanitary.
The only good thing IMO was the dive center next door. Hendrick was very helpful translating and lending a hand and it wasn’t even his property.
I’ve been to a few homestays and this one is pretty miserable. There seem to be several excellent ones in Arborek.. this is not one of them.

  • The Homestay itself is great if you are okay to have the bare minimum. The quiet place of the homestay is amazing and you feel really disconnected with everything. The food was aaaamazing. A bit of lack of communication with everyone because they probably don’t speak English but the guys from the dive center helped us with a lot.

We asked for a day trip de Pianeymo at the dive center and had to wait all day long to have some news or confirmation though. They didn’t say anything until after the dinner time which makes it impossible to search for another option because it was supposed to be early in the morning the next day. So if we don’t agree with a price for example, we should’ve just denied and couldn’t do any activity on that day because it was too late. (but in the end, the price was okay. Another woman had that happen and had to cancel her plans late in the evening for her diving..) I recommend you book your activities in advance.
Snorkeling gear is 50k a day (no fins included) which I think should be both included in the price of the homestay..

anyway, we had a great time and people where also very nice.

  • Highly recommended dive centre.
I was aware of some bad reviews from the past months but decided to go anyways because I knew somebody there, and I got to check that the equipment is brand new and in good conditions of maintenance. Divings are well organised and guided by two people who speak fluent english, are so friendly and willing to make a safe, interesting and fun experience for everybody, regardless of your diving level. Good briefings and reminders about safety procedures before every dive.
I was surprised to know when I got there that these issues have been solved for some time now, as this info isn’t apparently updated yet. Hope that it will get updated soon in StayRajaAmpat website as it seems unfair to stick to bad reviews from long time ago when they have improved so much. As long as these to people are running the dive centre, I think it is a great place to go.

About the homestay itself, also a good place to stay if you are comfortable with the basics and aware that you are in Indonesia and culturally some things work differently. Good food and bungalows, wonderful view. You might struggle in communication with the owners because they don’t speak fluent english but in my case the dive guys took care of everything.

    • Thanks for taking the time to leave a review of current conditions at Arborek Dive Homestay Lara. 🙏

It’s much appreciated, and it’s great to see that the previously reported problems have been resolved.

We’re not sure what you mean by ‘updated’: If you are referring to the older negative reviews, then those are updated by newer ones – like yours! (Reviews are listed in date order, with the most recent first.)

We do not selectively publish reviews, and nor do we edit the review history, as we believe that that older reviews provide an accurate view of the homestay conditions over time, and their responsiveness to guest feedback.

So that we can confidently claim that all reviews are genuine, we only publish reviews written by guests who have booked the homestay on Stay Raja Ampat.

We publish all reviews left by verified guests, including negative ones, and we don’t delete reviews once they have been verified and published.

Thanks once again for yours! 😊

  • Arborek Dive Homestay issues resolved currently (and highly recommended):

Hello all, as an instructor I was shocked to read some of the reviews about experiences while diving with the Homestay.

I was even more surprised when I arrived there and I found their equipment was brand new and the dive Homestay is guided by a licensed SSI international Divemaster. Together with an enthusiastic local guy who speaks fluent English they lead the dives with great care and preparation. The way the dive locations are chosen, briefed and handled are top of the standards of all professional dive associations.

Chose to give them a chance and I was not disappointed and some amazing dives along together with a friendly Swedish family who were Open-Water level and they felt extremely comfortable and also chose to do more diving for multiple days with Arborek Dive Homestay.

They are very aware of the reviews and have decided not to employ these dangerous and unresponsable freelance dive guided are longer.
At the moment you get 2 guides for the price of 1. A knowledgeable local and an international dive master who upholds the standards that he’s been taught through his organisation.

I am curious to see how they will uphold this quality of diving in the future (when the dive master leaves for example) and if they will keep their word about not employing these other horrible freelancers. For now I wanted to clarify that the issue seems resolved and I hope that StayRajaAmpat will delete the warning from their website, as it’s unfairly costing the Homestay customers.

Besides the nice diving the Homestay offers fantastic food and a warm environment and the beds in the bungalows on the water are very comfortable.

Bin eher abgereist

  • Nice people and Diving in Arborek Dive Homestay. They Dive around Arborek Island and Manta Sandy.

  • We had a great stay at Arborek Dive Homestay. The staff were very friendly, Hendrik spoke amazing English and was very helpful in organizing anything we needed or giving advice about the island. The food was fantastic and good variety although breakfast could be improved with more options (however most of raja home stays also have this issue and sometimes only give small amount of cake or cookies), but we really appreciated them making eggs for us when requested!

We loved the overwater bungalows, basic and could use a little updating but views were wonderful and a fan was provided which was great. Decent electricity also most of the day. Bathrooms could also use an update but this is similar to most home stays we visited.

The island is very small and walkable, fun to visit with local community and also small stores for snacks. The snorkeling at Arborek Jetty was some of the best we saw as well!

The dive center is fairly new but it was easy to organize dives, dive guide was good and the equipment was great! Very new and worked well if you needed rental gear.
Would definitely recommend the homestay and especially dive center if you are staying on Arborek!

  • The positives – The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms have an amazing view. Food is sufficient and very tasty. They always ready to share internet incase you don’t have a sim card which is super kind of them.

The negatives – Cleanliness , hygiene is an issue. The mosquito nets need to change as they give out a foul smell. Toilets and bathrooms are not maintained and have a lot of mosquitoes and it’s walls are covered with moss.

    • Hello Shivan, thank you for your input which is very helpful in developing our homestay, for that reason, in the future we will improve our bathrooms and toilets even better 🙏 thanks regards Arborek Dive Homestay Crew

  • Hello,

I stayed there for 5 nights and it was a very pleasant moment. The bungalow is very nice and you are rocked by the sound of the sea.
The shower is Spartan but don’t forget that Arborek is a small island.
A very beautiful place with very beautiful people!

  • I stayed here on June 2018. It was an unforgetable experience and I would def come back. The room is over water, it was modest, a little bit dark but it’s enough considering the electricity there was still rare.
Pak Rakibu dan Pak Michael is really nice. They help us and being a very good guide. The tour that they held was very affordable and cover most places, though the downside the speedboat was only 1 engine.
The meal they provide was also nice, they were trying to fulfill your taste. I already fell like home with this homestay and especially Arborek village. And If I were to visit Raja Ampat, I def come back there again.

  • I stayed at Arborek Homestay for 1 night. It was my second step after beeing on Kri. The bungalows are simply furnished, but it is quite adequate. The guy was nice and helpful at the beginning… but at the end he came to me and he asked me 400 rupie for the room!!!! I’ve tried to tell him that on the web site it was written 250rupie (that’s why I’ve choose this homestay) but he said that it was a mistake…?? so I couldn’t do anything cause I was alone and I already had my dinner (rice and vegetables even here??) so i paid… I’ve asked him how much was the boat to go to pyanemo for the day after, and he said 700rupie.. so I said okay!!! The day after in the morning he came to me and he asked me 1000 rupie for the boat…. I was like?? seriously??? Last night you told me 700 and now 1000… I’m not going sorry… so he start to treat me really bad and he told me to leave his homestay…. but I said that I just wanted the lunch cause I’ve already payed, but he said not!!!! I was not allowed to have the lunch cause he organised the boat trip for me and after I didn’t want to go… seriously the worst experience ever!!!

    • !! That’s totally unacceptable. We’ll pass your feedback on to the Homestay Association for action Federica. The price on the website is exactly what you should have paid – it’s the price your host set!

Really sorry you had this experience and we’ll do our best to make sure it doesn’t happen to anybody else.

  • Great stay!
For those amenable to rustic living, as is the standard in Raja Ampat, Arborek is a great island for snorkeling and swimming. Arborek Homestay is located on the better side of the island where ocean breezes cool the bungalows at night. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

Thank you for a great time guys!
Hope to see you again very soon,
    Mathieu

  • In August we have been staying in the beach bungalow at Arborek Homestay and it was great. Basic as all the homestays, but very friendly and very hospitable staff. The food was good, but very basic, fish and rice every day, but we expected that. The bungalows were very clean. They could improve on being more clear on the tours they can arrange for the guests and when these are planned, that could benefit the homestay as well. We were in touch with Rachel, who arranged everything and she speaks English very well, she was extremely helpful from the point we made the booking until the point we left the island and even thereafter!

    All together, good experience!

Hicimos tres excursiones, a Manta Sandy, Wayag y Piaynemo.

  • We stayed at Arborek Homestay for 2 nights and it was okay. It was our second step after beeing on Kri. We met nice people here and felt okay in our bungalow. The bungalows are simply furnished, but it is quite adequate. The family is nice and helpful. Our arrival was not even expect, it had to be prepared quickly. But we were also a bit early and on Raja Ampat anyway the motto is “relaxation”. 🙂 The reef directly at the bungalows we did not test, we went directly to the jetty on the other side of the island to snorkel and it is really fun! Many big swarms and great colorful corals. The small village has a lot of children, which are all dearest. These were really great moments! One night a thunderstorm and a storm hit us, so we thought the roof would fly away. Part of the roof has really flown away, so it rained in our room. Otherwise, we hardly had a quiet evening, because the homestay was always fully booked and it was noisy at night. All in all – okay and a nice stay. But it’s not necessary to stay there for a longer time. The food was delicious too. There is nothing to complain about.

  • The price/night is actually 350 000, not 250 000.
I haven’t stayed yet, but have been in contact and made a booking for next week.

    • Hi Dj, how was your stay here and in general how were your tours/diving? I’m planning a 5 night trip and not sure where to stay yet… Thanks
